To wonder if all steam mops are rubbish?

I live in a house with a lot of hard flooring, and two mess creating kids.
I thought a steam mop would be the ideal solution for floor cleaning. I bought a cheapish one (about £30) but it was useless and I returned it. It seemed really flimsy and didn't make enough steam to actually clean anything.

Does anyone have a steam mop that they rate? Or are they all just as rubbish? The ones on the shopping channel look amazing but everything looks amazing on there so not sure that's a good thing to go by!

Also have a shark but we have a large floor space so looking for an industrial steam mop. Any suggestions gratefully received!

I have the greem X5 one from several years ago. Its brilliant. Better than a stinky damp mop lying around and i can throw the pads in the wash.

Also it dries within seconds.

Karcher one is good and has lots of different nozzles if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s not an upright. It’s “Henry hoover style “ if that makes sense. Don’t know what you call this.

I always slosh some neat zoflora in with the water in the reservoir, makes the house smell lovely!

Bedtimesnacks · 17/04/2018 04:36

Had two now . Used zoflora in them mixed with water and both promptly died not long after

I'd be scared to put it in the actual tank, but you can give the floor a light spray with cleaner or disinfectant.

I've read a few threads where people are disappointed with their steam mop or steam cleaner but they are mostly people who bought cheap ones. I have a Shark steam mop and a Kercher steam cleaner and they are both very powerful.

I've had a Beldray for years and I love it. You can adjust the steam and it comes with a tonne of attachments so I've used it to clean the over.

Be very careful with Zoflora in the tank if you have hard water. 50% of people I know who have done this killed their mop.

MadisonAvenue · 17/04/2018 07:15

I put a bit of Zoflora on the cloth that fits on the mop head rather in the tank.

I think you get what you pay for. I have a SHARK steam mop and I love it. Quick and easy to use and doesn't leave any chemicals on the floor for crawling DS. And you can chuck the pads in the washing machine.

I have a Karcher handheld with floor attachment. It doesn’t hold much water and only goes for a 8 minutes at a time but if you prep the space your working in beforehand it’s fine. I use distilled water because hard water messed its older brother up and if I want to use chemicals I have them in a spray bottle and go over with the Karcher. I think long term they won’t be good for laminate but if you move quickly they are fine for a once a week deep clean.

I wouldn’t waste money on a dedicated steam mop because the majority of the time mine is cleaning tiles, microwave, hob, fridge, windows etc. I’ve had my Karcher for a year and it does the job. The terry cloths cost a fortune so I knocked up thirty from old terry nappies and they are far superior than the overpriced official ones.

The only downside is that they really do expose what a crap job of cleaning you were doing before it arrived on the scene. It’s upped my cleaning game.

Have a Vax floor steamer which was on offer. Often put one of those floor cleaning wipes under it first - kitchen gets dirty when I tread mud through from the garden - surprising how much muck that gets off, especially in corners. Then just steam over it again with the steamer.

Waitrose do one if their essential cleaning range sprays for mould in bathrooms and I use it to clean both bathroom and kitchen tiles. Their essential range are usually comparable quality to brand names but significantly cheaper.

If you need to use a mop and want to dry the floor quickly put a window wiper on a broom handle and go over the floor so you then just pop a towel on the surplus wet to mop it up. Works well

Not for me. I had a cheap one and it didn't work, didn't get the floor clean enough. I use a spray mop now. No bucket and mop needed, easy to store, use boiling water with flash and a high quality microfibre cloth and Job done.
