I'm 38, I have 3DC's just had a baby (hopefully my last) and I should have taken the surgeon up on being sterilised 😩

I've used the pill (many, many years) before & Mirena coil recently but they really affected my mood. In recent years I take anti depressants which really help with my mood.

What are my options? I've been so ill after this baby I can't face another pregnancy Confused

Mini pill here, though now considering injection or implant.

The Mirena sent me a bit weird, emotionally. When I had it taken out I became very, very anxious about things - much more so than usual. It wasn’t good. I wouldn’t have it again.

The best thing for me has been the combined pill, but I can’t have that as I’m bfing.

happymummy12345 · 16/04/2018 12:04

I'm on the combined pill. But I'm only 25 and we will definitely be having more children in the future.
I plan to stay on that for as long as possible (until I'm told I can't have it anymore). After that I don't know. Most likely switch to the mini pill. I don't like the thought of anything else, I'm happy to take a pill and it works for us. So I think why change whats working. And I've never used condoms in my life and never evert will.
But for you op I'd speak to someone and try and find something that works for both of you

Cuppaoftea · 16/04/2018 12:06

Does anyone know what age the dr will refer you for DH to have the snip. Hes willing as our family is complete Ds8 and Ds5

I don't think there's a minimum age as such, the GP will discuss his circumstances with him.

DH was 38 when he had the snip. At my postnatal check after having our youngest GP asked about contraception and when I said DH was planning to see him for vasectomy referral he said he generally advised a six month wait after a new baby to be certain (and to be careful in the meantime). So DH waited six months to see the GP, was then referred straightaway and had the Op within a few weeks.

With your children being older the Dr may well be happy to refer straightaway if he's certain unless your DH is under 30? They might advise waiting until 30s, not sure.

cafepourdeux · 16/04/2018 12:17

Wow thanks for the replies- def more options to consider than I thought :)

Oh I am also allergic to latex so condoms aren't my preference either.

I've had a mirena which was awful. The pill makes me depressed. Has anyone used the implant who is sensitive to hormonal contraception?

I used the Clue app in a bid to get pregnant. I guess I could use it in reverse & pull out / abstain on my fertile days.

I'm 6 weeks post c section and still bleeding dark brown/ black discharge (sorry if tmi!) and just stopped breastfeeding due to post birth complications.

OH had a vasectomy when DD2 was about 6 months old. We knew we were done at 2 DDs. He was 35 at the time, no problems getting it done.
I stayed on the pill until we got the all clear afterwards. Having been on it for 18 years on and off I was pleased to see the back of it!

cafepourdeux · 16/04/2018 12:19

(I'm fine with DP not wanting the snip- it's his body afterall). I just need to find a method that works for me as I've been so ill since having the baby. I don't think my body could take another pregnancy any time soon (ever 😐)

How does the cap work? Is it like a reverse mooncup?!

We tried this after I had the coil removed and was pregnant, (by accident), within 3 months! Fortunately we were very happy about it and had dc2 11 weeks ago by cs. But I wouldn’t rely solely on Clue again! We were probably being a bit reckless as we knew we wouldn’t mind too much; we dtd the day immediately after my fertile window that month and lovely ds is the result! Now we’re pretty sure we’re finished we’re being a lot more careful.

romany4 · 16/04/2018 12:27

Vasectomy.
Best thing we ever did

RedPanda2 · 16/04/2018 12:38

'Useless with condoms' erm OK then. He needs to look at the information leaflet.
We use latex free condoms (also allergic)

bellsandwhistles89 · 16/04/2018 12:46

I have the implant and its worked very well for me - on my second now, only get slightly teary in the first couple of weeks but it settles down and you then forget its there apart from an odd 'eurgh' from the other half.

However, my friend got the implant which she ended up removing after a month or so. Not sure if she had stuck it out whether it would of got better but she did what she felt was best at the time.

MrsPreston11 · 16/04/2018 12:53

I get headaches on the pill, terrible PMS and ovulation pain if I go "au natural" and no side effects hardly with the implant.

Pills have much higher dose of hormones as it needs to fight through food etc in the stomach, and the dose you take has to last 24 hours etc.

Implant is a constant tiny dose direct to the bloodstream.

I do have irregular periods, but I'll take them happily as they're so light compared to the huge heavy flow I've always naturally had. Pantyliner would be enough most of the time! Love my implant. 5 years in now, never want to be without to be honest.

Addictedtohavingbabies · 16/04/2018 13:12

Barbaro, you never know. I was 29 when I got my tubes tied. It's worth asking if it's what you want.

Nodancingshoes · 16/04/2018 13:16

Ive got the implant. Its been great for me - only had 1 period in almost a year! It did hurt abit at first but can't feel it now.

Chocolatepeanuts · 16/04/2018 13:21

Copper coil ia fab for me

Huggybear16 · 16/04/2018 16:48

It's almost time for me to remove my 2nd implant. I'll definitely be asking for a 3rd! I've tried many different combined pills and mini pills and have had problems with them all. No issues with the implant for me at all. I encouraged my sister to try it and she didn't like it (removed after 3 months). I think everyone reacts differently but I would recommend trying the implant for at least 6 months.

Excited101 · 16/04/2018 19:07

You have got to give the implant a good go if you don’t like it at first. I’ve had various experiences but it’s still worth sticking at it for me. When periods got a bit relentless I went on the pill as well and that sorted them straight out. Now I have pretty regular once a month periods but I have had time with nothing at all.

Korg · 16/04/2018 19:12

We use irritability, busy lives and childcare responsibilities. Much more reliable than the pill but the weight gain is worse imo.

Pikehau · 16/04/2018 19:16

Condoms until he has the snip - like you I couldn’t face a 4th.

Luckily my dh is open to it- just need to find the time!

cantstopfuckingeating · 16/04/2018 19:21

I use natural cycles... it's an app that tracks your cycle and is dependent on you entering data daily. Works really well for us and means I'm really in tune with my body

expatinscotland · 16/04/2018 19:23

DH had the snip.

blackteasplease · 16/04/2018 19:24

Abstenence seems a good solution with this particular man.

blackteasplease · 16/04/2018 19:27

I mean if he won't use condoms properly and won't have the snip.

However I'm single so that the method I'm using! Grin Until I meet someone but then it will be condoms which has always been my preferred choice. Not used hormones since I was 19 and only times I was pregnant was when I chose.to be!

Bilbonaggins · 16/04/2018 19:32

I’m 25 and just on to my second implant. Have been on the pill before but couldn’t get along with it, especially hated how bad it made my skin!
When I had my first implant put in I spotted for maybe 2-3 months which was extremely annoying but it subsided and then I had no bleeding for the rest of the 3 year period. So far no bleeding with this one and no other side effects either.
Certainly the best form of contraception I’ve ever used! Smile

TheDowagerCuntess · 16/04/2018 20:57

I find it curious that the men who're totally unwilling to step up when it comes to contraception, seem to miraculously partner up with women who don't find this unacceptable.
