To think some large supermarkets should be open until 8pm

Fed up of getting back on a Sunday after a busy hetic weekend and having to do my shop at a Tesco garage.

There's three large supermarkets in my town and all close at 4pm on a Sunday. Why can't at least one do an evening shift?

After being used to Scottish shops it really sucks in England. Sunday evening would be perfect for me to do a shop. I just dont like online shopping either, but if they have to work Sunday late evenings why is it so different for the shop workers?

Oh absolutely agreed! Andrew

And just to add that teens also encompass 18 and 19 year olds not just those underage. My DS is just applying for an evening job in our local supermarket - evenings and weekends are ideal for him as he will be going to Uni after the summer (living at home) but also as he would like to save up some cash but isn't really one for going out...yet! Also just passed his driving test and is mobile so would rather be driving than drinking.

When DH was a stay at home dad he worked one day at the weekend and 2 evenings and was glad to do so. One child free week suited him down to the ground and it it was fine for me to have a day with my DC to myself. Still one day for family trips/days.

’and if shops opened longer, they'd just be told they need to work longer.

In a sense they do. They change your shift to a longer or later one - not attractive to most people. New starters begin on the new shift pattern, making it harder to recruit and retain staff. Turnover is massive

The shifts don't have to be shared out equally. Any half decent manager allocates them mostly depending on preferences and for a large store it's easy enough to recruit a balance of people with different preferences.

Looking at supermarket jobs in my area they specify weekend / night / twilight in the title. So no they aren't treating all as the same.

As much as I like the SNP that is a shame they blocked this just to keep their competitive edge. They really shouldn't vote on England only matters.

I'm in Germany.... No bloody shops open AT ALL on a Sunday (except for some petrol stations). It is so annoying!

Completely agree.

The SNP are two faced gobshites.

‘The nursing homes that my friends work in, the shifts my friend does as a mental health practioner, the factory shifts my nephew works in, the civilian work my SIL does. All these people can put an odd request in but generally speaking if they want time off they have to put a leave request in.’

Exactly the kind of people that may need to shop on a Sunday evening
I'm not fussed if they are open or shut to be honest but are examples I gave of people who can't control their rotas as the OP ' couldn't believe' people couldn't pick and chose when they worked? However all these examples still get at least 2 days off a week as well as having part of the day, evening or night off. E.g. They may work 6/2 , 2/22or 22/06.

When I was a kid and my dad did shifts the stores weren't open 24 hours from Monday morning to Saturday midnight. There's a lot more flexibility than there used to be. There want on line delivery either!

jnfrrss · 18/04/2018 22:52

I didn't at all say people could pick and choose their own shifts Biscuit

Just saying they aren't totally random and good management give shifts to people mostly according to preference

When I was a kid they didn’t have the internet and people used to actually phone to each other for a chat instead of what’sapp/snapchat/Facebook etc. Things change. I don’t believe the shops being open a little longer on a Sunday will harm anyone as afterall they still get time off on the week.

It is a bit annoying but having lived in France where NOTHING was open on Sundays, given that supermarkets are open late the rest of the week and some are 24h, plus the Tesco express is open until midnight on Sundays, I don't find it too bad.
