To think some large supermarkets should be open until 8pm

Fed up of getting back on a Sunday after a busy hetic weekend and having to do my shop at a Tesco garage.

There's three large supermarkets in my town and all close at 4pm on a Sunday. Why can't at least one do an evening shift?

After being used to Scottish shops it really sucks in England. Sunday evening would be perfect for me to do a shop. I just dont like online shopping either, but if they have to work Sunday late evenings why is it so different for the shop workers?

Sorry for typos......

Andrewofgg · 16/04/2018 19:36

No, it’s not an emergency service. But a shopping centre is part of the leisure industry and should be allowed to serve its customers accordingly.

jnfrrss · 16/04/2018 19:51

I know there's loads of unhelpful advice here, but telling the delivery driver to take it into the kitchen is pretty bad. Someone disabled and on their own isn't wanting a stranger in their house.

Some people are acting as if the op said I'm in danger of starving, rather than what it actually said - it's fucking annoying if you are used to modern opening hours in Scotland.

Sunday happens every week, without fail. Plan for fucks sake. If I have an instance of being unable to provide fresh food for whatever reason, and on whatever day, we have freezer food or beans on toast. It’s not rocket science.

jnfrrss · 16/04/2018 20:07

That's not the point at all, and I'm sure you know it.

YABU. Let us have a day with something different from shopping.

Not too difficult to plan ahead even if with a home delivery, so you only need maybe a pint of milk.

jnfrrss · 16/04/2018 20:13

Sorry you must have misread the post as wanting to force everyone to go shopping on Sunday.

Ocado - they not only deliver the shopping, they will bring it into the kitchen, unpack the bags and put it away in the cupboards if you ask them. Their drivers are also very reliable and very helpful - they send you the reg.no. of van and name of driver in advance so you know who to expect. Have never been worried about receiving a delivery despite being on my own (with small child) in house.

crocuspie · 16/04/2018 20:18

I wonder have any of the people most adamant about not having full Sunday opening ever lived in a country where this was the norm?

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 16/04/2018 20:18

I'm actually English, living in Scotland and I think it's really quite sad the shops are open ALL the time. Tesco's never shuts apart for the 24 hours which is Christmas Day! But, having said that. It is a bit of a godsend sometimes!!

MycatsaPirate · 16/04/2018 20:21

Anyone remember when Sunday's had no shops open at all?

Doesn't bother me at all.

If we have plans on Sunday meaning we can't nip down to get a few lunch bits for the week during the afternoon, then I'll go on Saturday evening. That way we can spend Sunday out at the beach or wherever.

It's called forward planning.

jnfrrss · 16/04/2018 20:23

That's all very well if you can afford ocado, some of us have to use the discounters.

I remember my Mum having to go in on Boxing Day to open her branch of Argos so all the saddos could return their unwanted presents.

She had about as much choice about it as a lot of people in retail - do it or it's career abort....

If you're in a minimum wage job with a queue of people waiting to step into it, you work the hours you're "asked" to or you'll be out on your arse before you know it.

That's why I'm in favour of a mandatory closed day for the large chains that use & abuse their staff......

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 20:38

If Ocado delivered in my area, I'm sure I'd use them.

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 20:40

Odd, when I worked for Argos before I did my teaching degree, we chose when we worked on bank holidays. We had weekend staff who chose to work weekends. There were arguments over overtime as it was double and triple time and we had to rota it because everyone wanted to work. I loved working Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. The atmosphere was brilliant.

jnfrrss · 16/04/2018 20:44

Argos have cut the number of staff in a shop and Sainsbury's are planning on closing hundreds of stores.

People insisting on living in the dark ages are helping to close down the high streets and physical shopping locations.

MerryDeath · 16/04/2018 20:48

it's a ridiculous law and ought to be updated

UndomesticHousewife · 16/04/2018 20:53

The Tesco express near me is open til 11pm on Sundays. Anything I might need late on a Sunday evening will be in that shop, I don’t need to do my weekly grocery shopping.

frankchickens · 16/04/2018 21:02

What a load of old bollocks. High streets managed fine for hundreds of years without being open 24/7. The current diifculties are due to internet shopping, high rents and the high cost and inconvenience of high streets - and the dominance of supermarkets. Allowing large supermarkets to open 24/7 will hasten the demise of high streets

Sevendown · 16/04/2018 21:12

It annoys me about England too.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 16/04/2018 21:12

The atmosphere was brilliant.

My Mum enjoyed her time managing the store - apart from having to work Boxing Day - did you work Boxing Day or did your manager do it so you didn't have to??

I'm getting the impression that you're just arguing for the sake of it now though.

Another option for you though - do you have any of the Asda Collection Lockers near your house or on the route between there & your husbands work? You could order online & hubby could pick it up on the way home, while the minimum wage slaves get to have a lie in or go to church!

Win Win.....

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 16/04/2018 21:14

Absolute Tosh!!

I'm going to argue that the physical shops are in the Dark Ages and are closing because we can get it all cheaper online & delivered to our doors, meaning we don't waste time traipsing round town centres that are clones of each other and can spend our Sundays going for nice walks & going to the pub......

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 16/04/2018 21:17

Anyway, the reasons people are trying to give for being unable to survive 18 hours without a superstore are getting more & more ridiculous

I'm right, you're wrong, no point in me engaging any more.

See Ya!! Wink

iBiscuit · 16/04/2018 21:28

In what way does 24/7 opening help retail?

There are only so many £££s to be spent. Being open costs money, being closed when your competitors are open loses more still.

24/7 opening benefits nobody.

jnfrrss · 16/04/2018 21:30

Facepalm! That's the exact point I was making, reducing hours makes them less competitive than the internet.

People just like arguing for the sake of it. Sunday evenings are the evening I have the most free time and I want to shop then, like I used to in Scotland. It's annoying for myself and many others. That's fantastic if you aren't affected by it, but many are and want an end to it and don't want the church interfering with when people do their weekly shop.
