To think some large supermarkets should be open until 8pm

Fed up of getting back on a Sunday after a busy hetic weekend and having to do my shop at a Tesco garage.

There's three large supermarkets in my town and all close at 4pm on a Sunday. Why can't at least one do an evening shift?

After being used to Scottish shops it really sucks in England. Sunday evening would be perfect for me to do a shop. I just dont like online shopping either, but if they have to work Sunday late evenings why is it so different for the shop workers?

You won't be happy if you come to France or Germany, those of you who want 24hour, seven day supermarket shopping.
Here in France some shops open on a Sunday morning, but by no means most of them. Some corner-shop type mini branches of supermarkets open on Sundays and stay open in the week until 10pm, but again that is exceptional.
Normal shops, businesses shut at lunchtime, 12 or 1230 until 2.
There is more to life than work or shopping.

Wanting to do your shop on a Sunday evening or early morning isn't anything to do with rampant consumerism, that's a different issue that isn't the same as buying groceries.

The closing at lunch time in France and Germany is a thing of the past for most shops in urban areas. As I expected Sunday hours will be eventually.

Just let shops open when they want. This isn't a religious country at all and religion should only interfer with the life's of people that want to be involved with it.

I'm catholic but I personally want the Sunday hours extended. I'd be quite happy for all supermarkets to shut at 10pm every day of the week and scrap the 24 hour thing, I just feel i'd benefit from the extra shopping time on a Sunday evening.

frankchickens Making bricks-and-mortar close when internet trading is available makes bricks-and-mortar less competitive. If they want to keep the customers they have to trade when the customer wants to trade.

In Germany it is still extremely widespread (as is the use of cash). And even in Paris in the normal areas Sunday closing and one other day are quite normal. They also obey the working time directive.

NorahChangedHerName · 17/04/2018 19:28

I quite like the idea of supermarkets closing early on a Sunday. I've never struggled with this and think it's nice for those who work there. I just shop on a different day. Very definitely a trivial issue!

frankchickens · 17/04/2018 23:48

The point is why do we keep totally outdated laws?

Because there’s no desperate pressing need to change and other things are way more important

PasstheStarmix · 18/04/2018 07:57

I don’t think the attitude that other things need to change means that this law shouldn’t.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 18/04/2018 09:03

Moving south we were puzzled by our supermarket proclaiming 24/7 opening hours but closing at 4pm.
I would happily shop later on Sundays if the stores were open but manage okay at present.

Where we lived in Scotland, they quaintly had half day closing on Wednesdays. And on Sundays our local supermarket couldn't sell alcohol until after half past 12.

jnfrrss · 18/04/2018 10:19

I think it's pretty selfish to only be interested in issues that affect you and to assume that all the "poor shop workers" want to work reduced hours on a Sunday.

This thread feels very little Englanders wanting to live in the past.

I also feel it’s belittling retail workers: ‘poor shop workers.’ Would you say ‘poor lawyers’ or ‘poor solicitors.’ It’s extremely condescending. There’s retail workers I know that love what they do.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/04/2018 10:22

I hate it and have a moan about it almost every Sunday 🍷

PasstheStarmix · 18/04/2018 10:33

Maybe you should change your hours to weekdays than?

PasstheStarmix · 18/04/2018 10:34

Always loads of students and part time workers more than willing to jump int our place on the weekends..:

Im wondering if queen hates the early closing or herself working on Sundays?

I'd assume the former, but who knows

Lots of shops won't employ people who can't work weekends. I work retail - I'm expected to work any five days out of seven. I know my rota four weeks in advance and can request days off if I need them, but generally if you want a full weekend off you're expected to use your annual leave to accommodate it.

jnfrrss · 18/04/2018 10:56

Retail is just one of many industries that aren't 9-5.

I refuse to believe that people are just given whatever hours without taking into account preferences. When I worked in hospitality the manager organising the shift took into account who liked mornings / lates / evenings / weekdays and weekends so that on the whole people got mostly hours they liked.

PasstheStarmix · 18/04/2018 11:43

I used to quite like a day off through the week though, always quieter.

PasstheStarmix · 18/04/2018 11:45

I agree with jnfrrss regarding hours. People take jobs for all sorts of reasons and have to work their personal lives around he hours. For instance somebody with dc isn’t going to work a night shift as they can’t.

I also agree that a diverse range of people work for these companies and differ on what hours and days they would prefer. The managers try to accommodate where ever possible.

frankchickens · 18/04/2018 12:13

What a load of old bollocks.

There's no need and no great appetite to change - that doesn't give you the right to paint us all as Enid Fucking Blyton. How is wanting us to be closer in our approach to France and Germany being a " little Englander"? what a load of shite.

adaline · 18/04/2018 12:21

I refuse to believe that people are just given whatever hours without taking into account preferences.

Then you're a bit naive, really. Yes, some retail companies work to a rota and people have contracted hours, but many others don't. This week I'm off two midweek days, last week it was Monday and Friday, next week it's Sunday and Thursday. Nobody has set days and people who apply requesting set days are politely told no.

Personally I like it and I quite enjoy having my days off in the middle of the week and have no issue working weekends. But it's not really as simple as "refuse to work weekends" or "change your hours". I know full well that I'll probably have to leave when I have children, because I can't afford to fork out for five days childcare every week when I'll probably have two of those days off (but different days every week, so I'll need to book all five days just in case).

C'est la vie.

PasstheStarmix · 18/04/2018 13:00

You can book child care for the days you need last minute with some child care providers. My friend is always doing it as she works shifts.
