To think some large supermarkets should be open until 8pm

Fed up of getting back on a Sunday after a busy hetic weekend and having to do my shop at a Tesco garage.

There's three large supermarkets in my town and all close at 4pm on a Sunday. Why can't at least one do an evening shift?

After being used to Scottish shops it really sucks in England. Sunday evening would be perfect for me to do a shop. I just dont like online shopping either, but if they have to work Sunday late evenings why is it so different for the shop workers?

Retailers should be free to dictate their own opening hours. I find the Sunday trading laws in England to be a complete farce.

Some are open 10-4, others 11-5. Some "open" earlier for "browsing" but you can't actually buy anything....

frankchickens · 16/04/2018 15:04

Well you need food. You don't need to go to the cinema or bowling.

Even more whataboutery.

You can get food. You don't need to buy it from a mega sized supermarket that doesn't need to be open.

No-one's going to starve because the megastore was closed after 4 on Sunday.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/04/2018 15:08

I think its overly precious to expect them to open because you want them to be. If I worked shifts I might wish I could go to the cinema at 2 am, should we make ask the local cinema's rotate 24 provision in case someone rinks the world revolves around them?

Shop at a different time. Factor shopping into your plans. Online shop. Pay someone to do your shopping.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 16/04/2018 15:09

I have a DH that works different hours and sometimes, shopping on a Sunday after 4pm is the only time he can go

OK, so why can't he use the online shopping on a Saturday evening? Why is the expensive corner shop on Sunday after 4pm your only option for shopping?

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 16/04/2018 15:09

No-one's going to starve because the megastore was closed after 4 on Sunday.

Exactly.

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 15:11

It does make me laugh how people think all these suggestions are just SO easy.

Buy a bigger freezer with non-existent money to put in a non-existent space. Pay someone to shop for you, with non-existent funds because disabled people are so screwed. Get your DP to shop at certain times when they're supposed to be in work. It's all so easy for those who are privileged enough.

GnotherGnu · 16/04/2018 15:12

ICan't, what's your statistical basis for saying that most people are at work on Sundays? Obviously there is a substantial number that are, but most?

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 15:13

It depends on working hours. Sometimes he works away. Sometimes he isn't here. Carers don't do shopping. I can't order online as I can't lift the bags or items or put them away because my hall and kitchen aren't wheelchair accessible. Sometimes the expensive corner shop is our only option.

ICan't, your issues are around your husband's working hours, not your disability. The simple fact is that the law is not going to be changed to accommodate the relatively small number of people in that position who can't negotiate alternatives with their employers.

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 15:20

No, if I wasn't disabled I would be able to do it, so my issues are with my disabilities.

Small number or not, it's just another unnecessary way of putting people out. If shops wanted to open, I'm sure there would be people willing to work. After all, the unemployment statistics are high.

GnotherGnu · 16/04/2018 15:21

You categorically denied that most people are off on Sundays, ICant.; I simply made a polite inquiry about the basis for that assertion. Making assertions with, it would appear, no basis and slinging around childish insults in response to perfectly normal inquiries doesn't really enhance your argument.

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 15:29

Actually, if you read my comment I say not most, some people are off on a Sunday. Which they are. It's wrong to say "most" as they can't provide stats, so it isn't "most" until the figures are there.

If you're being a cockwomble, then I will say that you are. It wasn't part of my argument, so will neither enhance nor diminish it.

Situp · 16/04/2018 16:12

@Andrewofgg
Sorry, I should clarify: what i meant is that there is no online supermarket shopping at all.

No problem with other online shopping Grin

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 16/04/2018 16:15

so it isn't "most" until the figures are there.

But it is most isn't it?

Look at London or any other city centre on a Sunday - nearly deserted, some shops open, but most businesses closed.

Situp · 16/04/2018 16:16

@IIIustriouslyIllogical

Thank you! Grin

Andrewofgg · 16/04/2018 16:16

Thank you. But can you pass the time on Sunday placing an order for delivery on Monday?

Andrewofgg · 16/04/2018 16:23

The truth is that there is no obvious bright line to separate what is and what is not essential on Sunday. If broadcasting were reduced to one radio channel filled with recorded music and news summaries we’d get by. As we would if the small shops had to close too. Even the petrol stations and their shops - we could all fill up on Saturday.

So what makes retail special?

Hillarious · 16/04/2018 16:23

Is it every week you can't shop and that late on a Sunday is the only spare time you have? I'm sure there's some minor inconvenience to yourself, but nothing you can't deal with. If you're too busy at other times, can't you get some slack elsewhere in your life in the week rather than moaning about large supermarkets being closed for a few hours. I reckon they shut for 30 hours tops over the weekend. It's fair to ask what you are doing for the other 138 hours in the week that you can't shop in person or online?

PS Watercress doesn't freeze well, unless it's in a soup.

MonkeyPoke · 16/04/2018 16:57

If you are in this predicament every week shop on a different day or shop online.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/04/2018 18:28

Most supermarket delivery guys will bring it in to the house to your kitchen so all you need is to open the door. If you can't get to the door to open it get a keysafe and leave the details when you book online. Ash then to knock then open the door. You have booked a time so you'll know it's them. It doesn't have to be that every week your partner is doing a dull shop at the local convenience stop at 5 pm of a Sunday.

Coveredinbeeeeeeeeeeeees · 16/04/2018 18:43

I get annoyed by this at about 8am on a Sunday when my kids have woken me up at 5 and a trip out to the supermarket would be therapeutic. Then I realise its bloody Sunday and nothings open for at least another 2 hours.

ICantCopeAnymore · 16/04/2018 18:46

Nope, ours have always refused.

Also, nope again. I have PTSD and don't want someone in my house when I'm alone and have no way of moving around.

Again, things aren't always so easy.

GnotherGnu · 16/04/2018 18:50

Nope, ICan't, what you said in answer to the comment

Its about there being one day a week when most people are off

was:

No they aren't.

So, if most people aren't off work, it follows you are saying that most people are working.

HTH.

Toooldtobearsed · 16/04/2018 19:01

Quote prepared for the 'but it is different now, and you cant compare' brigade, but ffs, * was brought up on 9-6 Mon - Fri, except for Wed, when everything closed at lunchtime. Then half a day on Saturday, then nothing unitl Monday morning 9am.

No one starved, the disabled with partners working unsocial hours coped and the world still turned.

Get a fucking grip. This is a SHOP, not an emergency service that is unavailable for 16 hrs a week!
