To think some large supermarkets should be open until 8pm

Fed up of getting back on a Sunday after a busy hetic weekend and having to do my shop at a Tesco garage.

There's three large supermarkets in my town and all close at 4pm on a Sunday. Why can't at least one do an evening shift?

After being used to Scottish shops it really sucks in England. Sunday evening would be perfect for me to do a shop. I just dont like online shopping either, but if they have to work Sunday late evenings why is it so different for the shop workers?

Just shop on a different day!

Dailymailisshite · 15/04/2018 21:37

Isnt it strangely annoying? I know we have supermarkets open for the rest of the week and often 24 hours a day but somehow Sunday early closing seems too early to be of use.
I prefer the NI method of not opening until later and consequently staying open later which makes for a better use of the day.

Lazypuppy · 15/04/2018 21:38

Shops of a certain size are only allowed to trade for 6 hours on a sunday, most its either 10-4 or 11-5

PattiStanger · 15/04/2018 21:38

Meh, it's the law, I know when the shops are open and shop accordingly. I really wouldn't want to see them open any longer, retail workers need a break, there are always the small shops if you're totally stick

DickensianHysteric · 15/04/2018 21:38

YANBU. That was one of my biggest bugbears about living in England. But now I'm home and could go out to the 24 hour Asda right now if I needed to, so hooray!

Lazypuppy · 15/04/2018 21:38

Meant to afd that the 6 hours must be between 10-6, its the law

tigercub50 · 15/04/2018 21:39

We have a Tesco Express near us which I believe closes at 10 on Sundays

PlainOldJosephineMary · 15/04/2018 21:39

It's the law. Not hard to understand.

RatOnnaStick · 15/04/2018 21:39

One supermarket here goes from midday - 6pm where the others are all 10 - 4pm. It's a good idea.

SluttyButty · 15/04/2018 21:40

Hmmmmm after considerable consideration, I can only suggest shopping on a different day (Sunday trading laws apply here) or moving back to Scotland? (I never knew they had different opening hours so I e learnt something today) Grin

PrincessHairyMclary · 15/04/2018 21:40

Shop workers do work late evenings but Sunday is often when the price changes are done, deep cleaning and stock taking. I'm sure having the store free from customers makes their job much easier and more efficient.

Pinkvoid · 15/04/2018 21:40

The staff have families and friends to spend their Sunday’s with. Everyone is entitled to that. YABU- shop on a different day.

I personally think everything should be shut on a Sunday to give every retail worker a break. I worked in retail type places for a few years when I was a student and they were far tougher jobs than the teaching career I have now.

RunMummyRun68 · 15/04/2018 21:40

sunday trading laws

we enjoy closing at 4!! means we can recover the store after a busy week

ShatnersBassoon · 15/04/2018 21:41

0000 Monday to 2400 Saturday, plus 1000 to 1600 Sunday is just too limiting.

Starlight2345 · 15/04/2018 21:41

I also can say sometimes it might be more convenient however I don’t wish for longer opening hours on Sunday . I do believe I have enough hours in the week to do my shopping to let retail staff go home

WhiskeySourpuss · 15/04/2018 21:42

This drives me insane when visiting family south of the border... I'm so used to popping to Tesco or Asda on a Sunday evening but when I say to my sister at 6pm "fancy a run to Tesco?" She's reminds me that we can't go! We have 24hr opening 7 days a week at our local Asda

arewethereyetmum78 · 15/04/2018 21:42

That would really annoy me too op. I'm in Scotland and it's 24 hour, 7 days a week for the big stores. Used to forget every week that Aldi shut at 7 on a Sunday so would have to go to Tesco but even Aldi is open till 9 here now.

notacooldad · 15/04/2018 21:43

You would hate living in places like Germany, Austria and Switzerland for Sunday shopping!

adaline · 15/04/2018 21:43

The law in England says that stores over a certain size can only open for six hours (anytime between 10-6) on a Sunday.

Having also done both I really don't agree

However

To be The people.qho work in retail a break. It

notsohippychick · 15/04/2018 21:44

Umm because opening 24 hours most of the week just isn’t enough.........

YABU

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 15/04/2018 21:46

I say to my sister at 6pm "fancy a run to Tesco?"

How can that drive you insane? Its clearly not an urgent trip you’re making. Just to kill a bit of boredom.

jnfrrss · 15/04/2018 21:47

Oh I didn't realise they had to close at 6pm.

It's so annoying if you are used to Scotland, I'd rather they were shut a day or two during the week and later hours on Sunday.

I've lived in Germany and spain and large supermarkets were open late on Sundays. Pretty sure they don't have rules like this and the store can open if they want to.

In the good, old days, shops used to be closed on Sundays, and in evenings.

If you are going to be busy all weekend, can't you go shopping on Friday and just buy enough for the weekend? Or have milk and bread in the freezer you can defrost for Monday?

It just takes a bit of forward planning.

DwangelaForever · 15/04/2018 21:48

Try living in Northern Ireland, all main shops only open 1-6 🙄.

Although corner shops and petrol stations etc are open later.
