To think some large supermarkets should be open until 8pm

Fed up of getting back on a Sunday after a busy hetic weekend and having to do my shop at a Tesco garage.

There's three large supermarkets in my town and all close at 4pm on a Sunday. Why can't at least one do an evening shift?

After being used to Scottish shops it really sucks in England. Sunday evening would be perfect for me to do a shop. I just dont like online shopping either, but if they have to work Sunday late evenings why is it so different for the shop workers?

@ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo I have more of an issue with them opening so late. I'm all for Sunday working hours but 1 o clock is so late, I'd rather them be open 10-4 or 11-5 or whatever. It feels like a big mad rush because it's lunch time by the time you're able to do something, especially clothes shopping etc

PrettyLittIeThing · 15/04/2018 22:12

Shuts*

Weezol · 15/04/2018 22:12

The utter, utter bastards, closing 18 hours a week. I bet they just piss about in those 18 hours stocktaking, cleaning, auditing, merchandising and making repairs.
I suggest you contact your MP and log with 101.

pornlover · 15/04/2018 22:12

It's not hard to go shopping during the day or simply on another day. Moaning because supermarkets aren't open for a few hours on a Sunday evening, come on really? I'm sure your intelligent enough to know if you need to buy something during the day!

ButternutCrinkleFries · 15/04/2018 22:13

The big Tesco in my town does 12-6 on a Sunday and the Sainsbury’s does 10-4. They should negotiate with each other so that more time slots are covered.

Happyland8 · 15/04/2018 22:15

How do the Scottish supermarkets manage to do their deep cleans, stock takes & audits etc? Because they are open 24/7 and seem to function just as well as the stores in England without having any time with the store closed to carry out these tasks.

yerbutnobut · 15/04/2018 22:16

As someone who has worked in retail for many years I have heard this 'gripe' many times. when do people expect stock taking, cleaning, training etc...to be done when quite frankly its already a 24 hr industry the rest of the week.
Just organise yourself better, recognise your own mismanagement of your time/priorities and don't blame it on shops!

CadyHeron · 15/04/2018 22:19

However did we manage when shops were shut on a Sunday?
YABU, do it on another day, or do it online.

Ivorbig1 · 15/04/2018 22:19

Yabu
People don’t need access to “stuff” all the time.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 15/04/2018 22:20

Yep go to the cinema OP. Because they shouldn't be closed.

Hmm the point is, they arent closed. Whether they should or shouldn’t be closed isn’t the issue. That’s for a different thread. But as it stands, they’re open, so why not use them to kill boredom?

SinceWhenDid · 15/04/2018 22:20

I didn't actually know this. Do pubs shut early in England too?

Sara107 · 15/04/2018 22:20

It was only quite recently that I realised that the 'open 24/7' supermarkets actually close at 4 on Sundays!

jnfrrss · 15/04/2018 22:21

I don't understand this stock taking excuse, Scotland manages just fine and I did say just until 8 pm so that gives enough time.

If you don't want to shop on a Sunday don't, but why the need to tell other people that they shouldn't?

OP posts:
SoyDora · 15/04/2018 22:22

but why the need to tell other people that they shouldn't?

Not saying they shouldn’t. Just that they can’t. Because the shops are shut. So the best thing to do is to do your shopping another day.

jnfrrss · 15/04/2018 22:23

"how did we manage before" is such a stupid argument. We managed without the internet before, or safe clean water but would be difficult to go back now you are used to them.

jnfrrss · 15/04/2018 22:24

Doing your shopping another day isn't possible if you often leave Friday straight from school and come back Sunday. Many things only have a few days shelf life.

Sunday shopping was great, once it eventually comes in over here people would struggle without it.

PineappleScrunchie · 15/04/2018 22:24

Supermarkets don’t open at all on a Sunday in Germany, just bakeries and petrol stations.

Very good point OP. The interesting thing is, everyone on this thread who has stated that they are from Scotland and now living in England have all struggled with the Sunday trading hours. It's going back once you're accustomed to something that's extremely difficult.

MrsAmaretto · 15/04/2018 22:26

Really?? Totally forgot it was a thing in England, not really helpful to let you know I got my Tesco delivery at 9:30pm after getting home from a weekend away ;)

I know one of the Tesco drivers doesn’t work a Sunday as he’s a staunch sabbatarian.

SabineUndine · 15/04/2018 22:26

I actually miss Sunday closing. It meant you had to spend a day doing stuff that wasn’t shopping.

SoyDora · 15/04/2018 22:27

I’ve lived in many countries with Sunday shopping, I didn’t miss it when I moved to England. I can’t say that I ever did my shopping on a Sunday evening, I was usually busy doing other stuff.

SoyDora · 15/04/2018 22:28

Happyland8 I didn’t struggle at all with Sunday trading laws when I moved to England 🤷‍♀️

Clg199 · 15/04/2018 22:33

Bizarrely, it was the SNP votes that stopped the extension of Sunday trading in England and Wales. Apparently they felt if everyone got longer Sunday hours that premium Sunday pay that Scottish workers currently got would be removed. So they voted to keep England and Wales as they were.

AlpacaLypse · 15/04/2018 22:34

I'm old enough to remember when absolutely everything closed at 1 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays and didn't open at all on Sundays. Apart from the newsagents, which also sold sweets. But not milk or bread or anything like that. The only time I can remember there being a problem was when we'd been meant to be going to visit family one weekend but there was some sort of crisis and we were home instead, with no milk. Even then it was sorted as my mum knew the wife of the man who ran the dairy and arranged to pick a couple of pints up. There was always something in the freezer or in tins.

Interesting. I worked in Debenhams in Scotland as a teen and didn't get a penny extra on a Sunday. I know other places do offer extra pay but I wonder if there are any laws surrounding it?
