why do people do this?
it is concerning - are they newbies?

What do you mean? I change names every few days. This one is related to the TV show This Country. Is that topical?

Phosphorus · 14/04/2018 07:38

Why would it be concerning?

I could have been posing here for seven years under one name, and you still wouldn't have the first clue what my (imaginary) agenda might be.

Unless you are unusually open to the influence of total strangers, why would you care?

Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 07:39

it is trollish - without pointing the finger, i dont mean regarding a tv show, i mean regarding topical events in the news

Why is it concerning? People can call themselves what they like- it doesn't stop them from being a twat!

Lweji · 14/04/2018 07:41

Yes, they are newbies. They only post for that season and they reach the end of their useful life and die off.

You should be more concerned with pps whose fleeting life is associated with elections and referenda.

MrsTommyBanks · 14/04/2018 07:41

How so? Not being goady, I genuinely don't understand what you mean.

DancingLedge · 14/04/2018 07:41

Trollish??
Don't understand, please explain.

Lweji · 14/04/2018 07:42

Ups, sorry. I see that's exactly what you mean. Grin

Yes, there will be a few paid trolls/bots.

Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 07:43

I like to think when I post on mumsnet I am posting to fairly similar likeminded folks, not hairy handers who just post here to stir up trouble. obviously

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 07:44

otoh the names are pretty obvious as to their points of view

OP posts:
Lweji · 14/04/2018 07:44

Keep reporting anyone you think is a troll.

DancingLedge · 14/04/2018 07:48

We'd all like to think that.
For the most part, it's true.
But, there's always be bots, shills, and hairy handed bridge dwellers.
Sometimes laughably named, sometimes innocently named.

People name change. You don't know why. So names tell you nothing concrete.

moreDetails · 14/04/2018 07:48

Do you mean all the [something] TERF [something] people?

I like it as they're making it clear they should be ignored.

TheVeryHungryDieter · 14/04/2018 07:52

How long have you been on MN, OP? I've been here over six years and there are plenty of posters with multiple name changes for a variety of reasons. I have about 7 or 8 myself. Mostly to hop names if I want to post something too identifying.

It's also very often difficult to acquire a unique username. Paid trolls and bots often don't invest that kind of time - they're more likely to go with "user12345678". You'll notice if you're on Twitter that the bots are usually named something like "Barbara53246" or "RobertMAGA12345". Low effort. Stuff your granny might choose.

Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 07:53

i have been here 12 years - perhaps i am feeling paranoid - so now i should be paranoid of the user12345 names >

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 07:54

i suppose really i shouldnt assume we are all like minded similar types

OP posts:
DancingLedge · 14/04/2018 08:00

One of the reasons to value MN is that we're not all like minded, surely?
There are so many narrow echo chambers.

Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 08:02

good point dancing ledge
