Have you checked the foreign office website ?

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 06:47

I am feeling very anxious

OP posts:
Raven88 · 14/04/2018 06:54

I personally wouldn't leave. They have made a threat but I doubt they will follow through. I would enjoy my holiday and ignore it. If Russia are going to shoot them down it will be over the sea.

Raven88 · 14/04/2018 06:56

Russia, the UK and the USA will come to some agreement and it will be dealt with that way. Putin lives the high life. He isn't going to start a war and push America's hand.

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 07:06

My thoughts is that akrotiri where the bases are is filled with russians and russian businesses but am not that clued up about the international affairs to have an opinion !

What has happened is a limited strike against carefully selected targets in Syria associated with chemical weapon production or distribution. They will have been screened carefully to ensure as much as possible that no Russians or Iranians were present. The strikes were against Syria and the Assad regime.

For the Russians to respond against sovereign British territory in Cyprus, would be a significant escalation on a par for seriousness with the Falklands invasion.

In summary, extremely unlikely, you are completely safe.

NeverTwerkNaked · 14/04/2018 07:09

^ what patriarchy said

MrsTylerJoseph · 14/04/2018 07:16

I don’t think there’s any chance Cyprus will be attacked. Putin is not going to want to risk full scale war over a targeted attack. Even if he did retaliate it would be against USA ships or U.K. subs in the Med, not Cyprus.......although if that happened it might be a good time to leave but as things stand I don’t think Putin will do that. Thankfully he’s not as stupid as Trump. He will more likely downplay the attack so he doesn’t lose face with the Russians, issue a few threats and tell Assad to stop gassing people. everyone sits tight and hopefully behaves.

rocketgirl22 · 14/04/2018 07:21

Is this is a joke?

Of course you will be fine in bloody cyprus.

Raven88 · 14/04/2018 07:23

I was the same, my first time back after everything started with Syria and Tunisia I was really nervous for the first couple of days until I spoke to them about it. They feel safe living there.

A lot the talk from leaders like Putin is to instil a sense of fear because that's how they keep control. Also you don't tell the enemy what you are going to do unless you want them to react in some way. I think this all relates to a Brexit deal that Putin and May are secretly fighting over.

PoppyFleur · 14/04/2018 07:26

To echo Patriarchy to bomb a sovereign territory is extremely serious and very unlikely.

Additionally, when Cyprus came into financial difficulties following Greece, it is to Russia that they turned to for financial support. In turn for the money, Russia was granted access to Mediterranean ports. In summary, Russia has a lot of self interest in Cyprus and is very unlikely to bomb.

exLtEveDallas · 14/04/2018 07:26

There is no chance that Putin will strike Cyprus. There are thousands of extemely wealthy Russians in Cyprus, and millions of Russian Roubles banked there.

Do you remember when the Cypriot Government closed all its banks for a week and took 10% off all its savers? 2010 I think it was. Loads of British soldiers got screwed at the time because we had to have our wages paid in to one of their banks. Local Cypriot businesses defaulted on loans, homeowners missed mortgage payments, people lost cash hand over fist and the Government said "sorry but we had no choice, our economy is failing"

You know who didn't lose any money? The Russian investors, who inexplicably withdrew millions of pounds in cash and made cash transfers to Greek banks in the weeks preceding the shut down Hmm

There is a very Russian neighbourhood close to Akrotiri full of wonderfully ostentatious mansions. I cannot imagine Putin risking them...

Raven88 · 14/04/2018 07:52

I just heard on Sky news that the communication lines are still open with Russia and they were warned about this mornings strikes and told to get their people out. They could of shot the planes down but they didn't.

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 07:59

Thanks everyone who responded with facts that i admit i didnt know about that is why i posted in the first place .
@rocketgirl22 your response is unhelpful but no is not a joke i did read what russian said and it stated that the will hit missiles and their launch sites

I totally understand your anxiety dsis is based in Dheklia and dm is currently visiting her so I totally understand being worried for people you love.

Dsis said it’s business as usual there’s no concerns about any retaliatory attacks towards Cyprus

Raven88 · 14/04/2018 09:21

@firsttimemum889 she thinks there are Russian trolls on Mumsnet. Off topic the weather looks lovely.

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 09:24

@Wannabestepfordwife yes business is as usual no one seems concerned to be honest
@Raven88 yes the weather is lovely and hich makes me more reluctant to leave :)

@rocketgirl22 Are you always so insensitive?

Curiousaboutchoices · 14/04/2018 10:06

Very unhpful response from rocketgirl.

We are booked to go in May. I now don’t want to go. Psychologically flying into that zone would not be conducive to a relaxing holiday for me. Partner disagrees.

I’m sure you are all right about your reassurances but I do see where the OP is coming from and, were it me, I’d be arranging to fly home ASAP. But I’m a great big scaredy cat and logic says that action would be overkill.

Even though I know this I am cancelling my holiday and prepared to lose an awful lot of money rather than voluntarily feel (however unreasonably) really fucking scared.

scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 10:16

Not an unhelpful response at all from Rocketgirl. Have look at the FCO website for travel advice on Cyprus. I think people need to get a grip. As others have said, Russia has an interest in Cyprus, so not sensible to target it.

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 10:20

@Curiousaboutchoices i totaly undestand your feelings and actions . I love cyprus and is a shame they are caught up in this . The general population here seems unfaced coffee shops and reataurants are still full and the news here are not giving any warnings etc . Although most locals are a bit pissed off with the british . I am not sure if russia has made any statements yet though

OP posts:
firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 10:21

@scaryteacher how is her response helpful ? She could jave said it like you did !

OP posts:
scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 10:36

Think about it OP There are British Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus. If HM Forces aren't pulling out families of those serving there, then it's safe. If you can get onto MN, then you can get onto the FCO website and check the travel advice for Cyprus, which as at 15 minutes ago looked fine. Why come on here and get semi hysterical? Engage your brain and use your common sense.

I'd be more worried about the driving in Cyprus than I would about a Russian missile strike, which, as we hit Syria and not Russia, would take some explaining. Afaik, Russia hasn't officially declared Syria as sovereign Russian territory as yet.
