I'm hardly aggressive Curious, I just get irritated with people who can't seem to apply common sense to an issue. If as the OP says she's a Cypriot expat, then she should know what, if any, risk there is, going to Cyprus, as it was used during the 90s for air strikes during Granby, Telic in 2003, Ellamy in 2011 and Luminous in 2013. It's hardly a new thing.

Furthermore a little thought might help: Cyprus is an EU member state, so to attack it would be an attack on the EU. The SBAs are British; we are in NATO, and as per article 5, an attack on one, is an attack on all...so would Russia want to take on all of NATO? Russia has an agreement with Cyprus to use its ports, there is a lot of Russian money in Cyprus, so why would Russia attack it?

I also find it hard to believe that if the OP was phoning the British embassy that she wouldn't have looked at the FCO website. Indeed, I find it hard to believe that anyone who purports to live in the UK hasn't heard of the Foreign office or that you need to look at its website for travel advice as that is on the news pretty regularly whenever there is a problem.

OP, it's an open forum. You can post, and I can respond. That's what AIBU is about.

Please ignore scaryteacher. I really hope she doesn't teach geography as it is quite obvious she doesn't grasp where Cyprus is in relation to the Middle East. You're right to be concerned given The Russians have openly threatened British bases there. However, as most posters have said, It would be crazy for Putin to attack there. I personally wouldn't leave if I were you.

scaryteacher Big deal, your DB has driven in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Why even tell us that? That information doesn't prove that he is a good driver. In fact, lots of posters on here have driven in the Middle East, including myself. I'm guessing i'm a damn more experienced driver than your DB when it comes to driving abroad. Please stop this hero worship crap, its embarrassing.

The Greek government have their nose firmly up Putin’s fundament. No chance.

Please don't come home early. You're right to be concerned, but as other posters have said, it aint gong to happen in the near future.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 14/04/2018 19:31

There has been a UK military presence in Cyprus for many, many years & they haven't fallen victim to any attacks in response to this so I can't imagine this time will be any different.

kyrenialady · 14/04/2018 19:33

Well they are not concerned firsttime. Hopefully all will be fine.

I understand your concern though.

Waspsarewankers · 14/04/2018 19:34

The FCO website is the one stop travel information website in the UK. It's a government website. Everyone should be checking it before travelling anywhere in the current climate. It has everything on there - illness/disease risk, crime, terrorism risks, local cultural customs/festivals, money info etc.

If you come from Cyprus then you must know of its military links and their involvement/use during all recent conflicts??

The UK military has lots of accompanying families living on those bases. Hundreds of British children. If there was at all a risk they considered likley or serious, those families would have been evacuated. So the fact they are still there living thier normal lives on those bases means there is no need for panic. If they start evacuating military families then yes - get out fast.

However, if you are so distressed and worried now then get an early flight back. Being so distressed and worrief means you not your baby will enjoy the rest of your trip.

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 22:15

OP’s out with her girlfriends having what I hope is a lovely time.

OP we have brought DS to Cyprus twice a year since he was 3 months old. IME the Cypriots are totally bats about kids. DS was routinely whisked off and entertained in restaurants. Once in a taverna that was attached to the owners house he snuggled up with the families Nana to watch TV.

My point? Stay put, let DD and DM have the best time. I understand why you freaked, I would’ve done the same in the circumstances.

Curiousaboutchoices · 16/04/2018 09:13

How you feeling now OP? What is the feeling on the ground there?
