Vey rude, OP. Maybe try being nicer to people responding to you?

As said above, check the foreign office website.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 14/04/2018 10:47

I thought I heard an air line was pulling Cyprus flights yesterday?

Its unlikely they would attack Cyprus - It's far more likely they will be looking for military targets on the sea or in the air to aim for (or pretend they have shot something down anyway).

Curiousaboutchoices · 14/04/2018 10:55

It is so disappointing when people on a forum question the decision of others to come on to the same forum with their issue. What sort of queries are ok to raise on here Scaryteacher? Relationship issues : why don’t you go to relate instead of on here? Holiday advice: go to trip advisor; medical advice:doctor; cooking:read a fucking recipe book; and so on.

The OP is looking to discuss the safety of where she is currently on holiday in the face of military action taking place at one of the closest landmasses from Cyprus, being launched and coordinated from Cyprus and taking place in and around its surrounding waters. Whatever the official travel advice, no reasonable person could say her concerns are totally unfounded. If this were happening in France, those in Cornwall would doubtless be shitting it, however ‘technically’ safe they are according to our government.

Putin is nuts. Trump is nuts. I wouldn’t trust anyone’s advice if it seeks to predict what will happen next.

Effendi · 14/04/2018 11:02

You can sign up to FCO travel advice here:

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:14

Whereabouts on the island are you OP? I expect it's quite a distance from the bases. But as others have said, there's a lot of Russians and Russian business interest in Cyprus. Also I noticed that a lot of big new hotels going up have Chinese investors. Putin isn't stupid.

Meanwhile the golf is terrific, and in my experience (27 visits) the driving is absolutely fine.

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:15

AsA I suppose it would be imprudent to fly passenger flights during the strike, maybe that's why flights were cancelled.

Alwayslumpyporridge · 14/04/2018 11:16

Cyprus has been used for a very very long time as the watch point for the Middle East and was used as launch location for certain strikes during wars previously without retaliation. There is a large presence there from the British intelligence and security agencies there paling with intelligence from UN and USA, so you are not unprotected.

You may get aircraft noise depending where you are staying on the island, I don’t think it would put me off travelling there tbh.

scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 11:17

Firsttimemum Are you a teenager? If you had engaged your brain and looked at the FCO website, you wouldn't have had to drama llama on here. If you were that bothered, why go to Cyprus where there are (gasp) military bases used by the RAF.

Curious Anyone with the very least smidgen of common sense would have checked the FCO website; or if they were that worried, contacted their tour operator. If this were happening in France, those of us who live in Cornwall would not be shitting it, we are used to living near the largest naval base in Western Europe with all the nuclear reactors puffing away on the submarines.

The FCO remains the best source of travel advice in these cases. I doubt anyone on MN will have more relevant information or intel, and if they do, they will know not to post it on here!! If there were any danger the FCO would he getting Brit nationals out, and the Forces families would be leaving. At that point I would start to get concerned, but not until then.

The OP needs to get a grip, and look at the FCO website. It is not as if there are no sources of reliable information for her to go to before MN.

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:19

You've made your point scaryteacher no need to be an asshat about it.

scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 11:19

TSS My db was not at all complimentary about the driving when posted there with HM Forces!

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:20

Well then obviously your brother is right. Jesus wept. I found it fine, perhaps I am a more confident driver.

scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 11:21

TSS I wasn't being an asshat, merely applying common sense. It seems in short supply on MN these days.

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:22

Lucky you're here to show us all the right way to go then scary

scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 11:23

TSS He's driven in the Middle East, and in Afghanistan. Draw your own conclusions.

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:25

Yes, that he's not as confident a driver as I was there. That's my direct experience, not the opinion of a relly that I'm drawing on.

ButDoYouAvocado · 14/04/2018 11:25

Well I'm here and staying put. If the locals arent worried then I'm not either. :-)

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 11:26

What's the weather like Avocado? I could of course check the website, but it's nice to chat isn't it?

BillyAndTheSillies · 14/04/2018 11:28

We had the same thought taking our 5 month old DS to visit relatives in 2016. We flew two days after the first missiles leaving Akrotiri.

Reminded ourselves of how much Russian money is in Cyprus and realised they wouldn't touch it. It's always worrying (particularly driving down Ladies Mile beach and seeing the launchers).

Keep an eye on FCO but doubt it'd be a risk.

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 11:32

@scaryteacher i am from cyprus expat to the uk my husband and child are british .i brought my 6 month old to meet my family here . I had no knowledge of the website you are reffering to i called the embassy for advise but they were closed . I dont undestand why i need to justify posting a question on an open forum ! Know-it-all sarcastic people who take pleasure in insulting pther people's intelligence Really itritate me so i will stop replying to you now
Oh and the driving here is fine !!

OP posts:
firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 11:34

Thanks everyone else again for replying sensibly
@ButDoYouAvocado hope you have a lovely time in our island :)

Curiousaboutchoices · 14/04/2018 11:41

Gosh Scary why so aggressive? Whatever you think of the op and her views, she’s 60 miles from the prospective landing site of missiles launched by a man who basically said ‘we’re coming to get you’ on fucking Twitter. And 60 miles from the brawn and weaponry of a shirtless invader who actively supports totalitarian regimes. She’s worried, she has a small baby and is in the early months of those frighteningly strong protective parental instincts, ffs be a bit kinder would you?

counterpoint · 14/04/2018 11:51

Why on earth do we have military bases on Cyprus?

Is there any corner of the globe we haven't contaminated with our imperialist warmongering?

firsttimemum889 · 14/04/2018 11:54

@counterpoint we got "independence" in 1960s lol !!

OP posts:
Curiousaboutchoices · 14/04/2018 11:54

We used to ‘own’ it counterpoint...

I agree with you.

ZeframCochrane · 14/04/2018 11:59

We go to Cyprus every year and are going again in June, no worries at all. Wouldnt go anywhere else.
