To think older women are a hated group in Britain?

While older men seem to be tolerated far more, and looked on sometimes as kindly old gentlemen; older women seem to be looked on as lonely, interfering old biddies who have outlived their usefulness.

I think they are more invisible than hated.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/04/2018 16:06

That's quite a surmisation. It really depends on context and circumstance.

AmalClooneyisinVogue · 11/04/2018 16:07

Mumsnet hates older women. Especially on Style & Beauty.

Older men are pretty much useless. Often from generations that didnt do childcare, housework or general caring. Now theyre retired and a bit immobile, theyre a liability Grin

Older women who take on grandchildren, caring for others, lollipop ladying, charity shop work, etc, should be feted and celebrated.

This post is meant to be lighthearted btw. Other types of older people are available 😀

The ones I know in life are great. Some of those I have encountered on MN are a tad patronising to posters they believe to be younger than them.

dinosaursandtea · 11/04/2018 16:35

Hated? Seriously?

KC225 · 11/04/2018 16:37

Off to style and beauty for a net scrap ..... See ya

iffyjiffybag · 11/04/2018 16:37

No, not remotely Confused

"Mumsnet" doesn't anything. You are MN, so am I. Do you hate older women? I don't.

Ilovecamping · 11/04/2018 16:38

The problem is if we are asked a question we usually give the answer they don’t want to hear.

as a 61 year old i dont get looked on as an interfering, lonely old biddie by anyone i know, at bike rallies have a laugh with big rough tough biker type people, love working with the volunteers in our charity shop (young and older ones), Work two jobs so dont sit round moaning about being bored all day, go to live rock gigs and bike club nights, go to bike shows and rides out all over the north of England on a big american cruiser bike , read books voraciously, dont have time to be lonhely or come across as lonely and certainly dont get anyone say im not useful, or sorry do you mean over 80/90 year old women,

PinkCalluna · 11/04/2018 16:44

“Hated?” Confused

Might depend where you are I suppose. They are the backbone of our community.

Volunteering in the local museum, charity shop, hospital, seniors clubs and playgroups, the local afternoon tea dance and seniors exercise groups.

Running all sorts of church committees and the Sunday School. Running the local community beautification group (they do all the hanging baskets and floral displays around the town centre)
Lots of older women also help look after their Grandchildren or have caring responsibilities for elderly relatives.

I don’t recognise the characterisation of “lonely interfering old biddies” at all I’m glad to say.

My parents are in their 70s and have a better social life than I do.
