I'm in Starbucks having a coffee. Sitting at a table for 4 waiting for a friend.
A woman with a big retriever type dog comes in and sits at the table for 4 beside me, on the side beside me so we are right next to each other.
I don't like dogs so I slid along the bench so I was at the other side of my table from the dog.
The dog then curled itself up under my table with its head on my bag.
I said "Excuse me, I'm sorry, I'm not very good with dogs. Would you mind keeping your dog under your table? Sorry, I know it's a bit pathetic of me."
She said "what is your problem? Dogs are allowed here you know. Do you want me to get the staff over?"
I said no it's fine, but could the dog maybe lie under your table?
After much huffing and puffing she eventually moved the dog.
WIBU? I don't think so but maybe I was?

She was very rude. I don’t let mine impose on other people.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2018 19:41

YANBU. I don’t mind dogs but wouldn’t want someone else’s under my table and would have asked her to move it.

To the posters that mention children, I also tell children to go back to their own table if they come up to me in a cafe!

I LOVE places that allow dogs! We went to see friends this weekend and went for breakfast on Sunday. I was really worried that ddog wouldn't be accepted at their choice of venue but was pleasantly surprised (LOTS of dogs in there too - fabulous!).

If ddog hadn't been allowed then I'd have been sitting in the car, in the car park, keeping her company. Car park was 1/2 a mile away so there's no way I'd have left her in there alone for the necessary time (she doesn't settle - spends her time looking out for us coming back, bless her), so I'd have been going hungry!! She was an absolute star and unusually for her, settled under the table on my feet. She was rewarded by one of my two sausages...

But I wouldn't ever allow her to bother anyone else, whether they encouraged her or not.

I wouldn't go to a cafe with a filthy floor starbucks floors are clean enough for a handbag surely ?
MrsJayy you've never been to Starbucks, have you?
(not round our way anyway)

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 09/04/2018 23:06

Urgh. It's dog owners like this who give them all a bad name. Yanbu at all

You were polite (maybe too polite!), explained your problem with the dog and asked nicely for her to keep her dog under control. Firstly she was rude not to apologise but to make you feel bad was even worse.

ReanimatedSGB · 10/04/2018 01:43

Assistance dogs are generally well trained and do not bother other people.
I'd still move seats if someone with an assistance dog came and sat beside me - they have as much right to be in whatever public place as I do, but I don't want to sit near a dog.

DanceDisaster · 10/04/2018 04:25

Starbucks are frequently filthy ime. Someone pointed it out to me recently; I’d never noticed before.

TomRavenscroft · 10/04/2018 10:10

don’t go there if you don’t like it.

What a silly thing to say.The OP wasn't in a country pub Hmm
and it's perfectly reasonable to ask someone politely to move their dog so it's not so close to you if you're not keen.

BigBookOfNonsense · 10/04/2018 10:17

I'm a dog owner... and I wouldn't let my dog lie under someone else's table unless they were actively encouraging him. It does happen - some people like me, pre-DDog are dog starved and will happily give love to any dog in the vicinity. You can't blame the dog for resting his head - he isn't doing anything 'naughty' like chewing it but you can blame the owner for not moving him.

When I get on the bus with DDog, if there's no pairs of seats available, I actually ask people if they mind me sitting next to them with him. It's not hard Confused

SerenDippitty · 10/04/2018 10:19

I had no idea Starbucks were dog friendly.

There’s no way I’d let my dog lie on someone else’s bag, YANBU.

puppymouse · 10/04/2018 10:36

I have a big fluffy retriever. I would pay money to let someone else's rest its head on me, my bag, anything - I am a total dog weirdo and say hello to most dogs I see out and about. But I wouldn't dream of speaking to you like that if you asked mine to move. She was rude. She might not understand your concerns but they are entirely valid.

Ginorchoc · 10/04/2018 10:38

I’d never let my dog do that! Our local Starbucks is dog friendly, you do have to wait at the door first for a member of staff to check the dog is friendly. If they are well behaved they receive a little treat from the staff before they go! (Well our dog did)
