Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

I'm confused about the harvester reference both diet coke and Pepsi max have no sugar but I've never seen a harvester sell both? The drinks machines are sponsored by the company so they wouldn't sell coke and Pepsi together?
My husband and I don't drink tea and not much coffee maybe a cup a month if that we drink squash and go through lots of diet Pepsi probably 4/5 2lt bottles a week. I've just been in bed I'll for 2 weeks and only drank water I've decided we need to cut down a lot and we've decided we will only have it in weekends.
I've been to asda with dd today 2ltrs of normal coke was £2 diet £1.29 same as it's been for months. 11year old dd commented that pop had gone up but when we got to the cake aisle Mr Kipling cakes were half price.

Buy diet Coke and simply add your own sugar. A 1000 grams of sugar is around 70 pence to purchase, a can of Coke typically contains around 40 grams - so a little over 2 pence per can to regain the sugar hit.

I see the artificial sweetener conspiracy theories are now in overdrive. Never fails to amuse me how MN is full of smug people thinking they're beating the system by slurping down liquid sugar drinks, thinking those poor mugs with zero calorie diet drinks are clearly the ones who end up fat, with diabetes and costing the NHS millions.

Chrys2017 · 07/04/2018 23:15

Lumpolard And when all the health problems start to emerge from long-term consumption of chemical sweeteners, what will you say then?
This whole sugar crisis started years ago when food manufacturers convinced everyone that dietary fat was bad, and started pumping sugar into everything instead to make it more palatable.

Which ones? Are you saying that there are no health issues whatsoever connected with chemical/artificial sweeteners?

What a curious thing to find amusing.

The majority of people who drink sugary drinks in moderation aren't going to have any of those issues are they? And yes, all the people I know who drink diet drinks are fat so clearly they aren't the answer to the obesity epidemic.

It will still have aspartame in it, which gives some of us the trots and causes headaches in others.

It tastes vile to me, I can taste it easily, tastes bitter, leaves a foul taste in my mouth and gives me diarrhoea. Makes my autistic son tic. No, thanks.

PickAChew · 07/04/2018 23:37

Sugar tax or not, vile have been doing funny things, lately. Now their big bottles are 1.5l for standard coke varieties, 1.25l for all the nasty weird flavours and 2l for caffeine free. Prices are all over the shop.

Herbalteahippie · 08/04/2018 00:13

It’s £50 a half gram round ereWink

unicornlove · 08/04/2018 00:13

I've just had a look on the Asda website and the prices they give for full-fat coca-cola do not reflect the prices you have written in your post OP. Maybe it was labelled wrong in the shop? 30 cans of full-fat Coca-Cola is 8.50, compared to 7.50 for diet Coca-Cola (£1 more for 30 cans).

RoseWhiteTips · 08/04/2018 00:18

Why on earth would anyone want to buy 18 cans of Coke at one time? Unless of course they were addicted...

RoseWhiteTips · 08/04/2018 00:20

The real issue is the sheer QUANTITY of this awful stuff being bought by one individual NOT the price.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/04/2018 00:21

The sugar tax is well overdue.

blackteasplease · 08/04/2018 00:26

I don't really like fizzy drinks so, selfishly, I'm struggling to care about this either way.

blackteasplease · 08/04/2018 00:29

I hate the fake sweetener stuff though. pah! I don't think the government should be encouraging it.

When I have the occasion.fizzy drink I won't mind paying a bit more. I think they are supposed to be an occasional purchase not every day and the tax is supposed to encourage this. But I guess it's failed if it just encourages aspartame.

Celebelly · 08/04/2018 00:31

'Why on earth would anyone want to buy 18 cans of Coke at one time? Unless of course they were addicted...'

Er because it lasts for ages and is cheaper and more efficient to buy in bulk rather than buying individual cans when you want one? What an bizarre comment. Why do you buy 24 rolls of toilet paper at once? Are you addicted to wiping your arse?

Octave777 · 08/04/2018 00:34

Just drink water.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/04/2018 00:34

Celebelly

I do not buy 24 rolls of anything.
Your rude, defensive comment is laughable.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/04/2018 00:36

Yes - just drink water! There’s a thought! No revolting sugar in that. Might help your shape and your teeth, to boot.

Celebelly · 08/04/2018 00:36

It's not really defensive as I don't buy 18 cans of coke. I'm just not a Judgy McJudgerton about people who do. But I guess we have one thing in common: we both find each other's comments laughable. So that's nice at least!

nanaheyhey · 08/04/2018 00:39

Stop drug dealing in Asda.

Notwellbitch · 08/04/2018 00:39

I bought a tray of think it was 30 cans of coke when we had visitors almost 2 years ago. Only recently finished them (yes I think they were past the best before but they tasted ok Blush)

Cant believe people are being judgmental about buying in bulk now. Weirdos. Costco is great for lots of stuff and works out cheaper.

RebeccaCloud9 · 08/04/2018 00:39

This is missing the point I know but it got me wondering!

To me, tins are what beans/tuna/chopped tomatoes etc come in and cans are for drinks. Tins (in my mind) are thicker and more solid, whereas a can could be crushed easily. Is that a regional thing? Are the words interchangeable?

Sn0tnose · 08/04/2018 00:40

Why on earth would anyone want to buy 18 cans of Coke at one time? Unless of course they were addicted... I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest it's usually for the same reasons people don't buy individual teabags.
