Pink burger

Please help settle an argument.

DH just cooked burgers and I noticed part-way through dinner that 5 year old DSs was pink on the inside.

I mentioned it was pink and DH said it would be fine. I disagreed and DH got all defensive saying they're always like that and we've eaten them pink before (not me, I have my steak well done!) and it would be fine.

I said I'd rather he didn't eat any more and got up to make something else for DS and DH said I was being ridiculous.

So MN jury, would you serve your kids pink-in-the-middle burgers, and AIBU for not wanting to??

Yes that’s exactly what it was, salad
Shared same meal, everything but I had a side salad and was violently ill

minipie · 06/04/2018 21:58

Well, once again I'm out of step with MN on a risk issue. I and my family have always eaten rare burgers and so have DH and his family, and never had any problems. We do buy decent mince though and make our own.

There are all sorts of food poisoning risks out there, including bagged salad, pre prepared sandwiches and buffets - I don't see the outcry over those...

Makingdinner · 06/04/2018 22:02

But mini the risks on things like that are i imagine quite tiny compared to raw meat!

TooTrueToBeGood · 06/04/2018 22:10

I've been eating raw mince out of the packet for years and have never been ill

That's no more relevent than the people who try and downplay the risks associated with smoking because their auntie Nelly smoked 60 a day and lived to be 100.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 22:16

Ahh yes the I know someone who... anecdote as if it’s irrefutable clinical fact
To all of you eating raw burgers, you’ve got lucky,it’s not the provenance or price of your meat that’s the protective factor
But of course there are always those I know someone who... anecdotes. Funny story at best.

unicornlove · 06/04/2018 22:43

When you go to a posh burger place, they always warn you they are cooked to be a little pink inside x

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 22:48

No they don’t
Clearly just places you go

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 06/04/2018 22:49

I've been eating raw mince out of the packet for years

No plate?

I don't think that's exactly adding balance, but you might have just persuaded a few MNers to go vegetarian. Grin

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 22:51

Can I just say posh burger is an oxymoron
No burger is posh

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 22:57

Popping pills for years and still alive = ecstasy is safe
Smoking 60 fags a day for 60 years and still alive = smoking is safe
Driving under the influence for years and haven't crashed/killed anyone yet = drink driving is safe.

Eating raw mince*...
*
That's slightly bonkers in my opinion. But I am clearly risk-averse and value my health (and that of my DC!)

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/04/2018 23:13

I'm still here and haven't been smoking anything Grin.

My raw mince eating habits are no more irrelevant than all the posters claiming a pink burger will cause food poisoning. It might, but it's far from guaranteed, and the risk is negligible in my considerable experience.

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 23:27

But Barbara

I'm not dismissing your views, but...

Properly cooked mince containing e-coli is unlikely to give you food poisoning.

Uncooked mince containing e-coli is far more likely to give you food poisoning.

Not all mince contains e-coli.
You've been lucky.
You might not always be.

Or... you have the constitution of a T. rex Grin

You can really tell which posters haven’t bothered reading the thread and just chip in the same incorrect drivel as 80 others.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 07/04/2018 01:22

I just don't understand the appeal of raw mince eaten out of the packet. Confused it must taste like very bland cold maggots, although I've never tried it.
Everyone's different I suppose!

tiggersneverdie · 07/04/2018 04:15

I must be a bit weird, because I like my steak and roast beef rare but the thought of a rare burger makes me retch. I do not understand how people can eat Steak Tartare. Euw!

Thishatisnotmine · 07/04/2018 04:47

Depends on the mince. If I get it fresh from the butcher and cook it within a day or two I would happily have it rare in the middle. If it is older I would cook it through. Minced meat grows bacteria easily, unlike a sold piece of steak. I would never cook supermarket mince pink although I would eat it if I just ballsed up the cooking time. Would not let dc eat pink older mince though, not a risk I would take.

TooTrueToBeGood · 07/04/2018 07:54

My raw mince eating habits are no more irrelevant......

Are you sure? I suspect there's a high likelihood you have undiagnosed mad cow disease.
