Pink burger

Please help settle an argument.

DH just cooked burgers and I noticed part-way through dinner that 5 year old DSs was pink on the inside.

I mentioned it was pink and DH said it would be fine. I disagreed and DH got all defensive saying they're always like that and we've eaten them pink before (not me, I have my steak well done!) and it would be fine.

I said I'd rather he didn't eat any more and got up to make something else for DS and DH said I was being ridiculous.

So MN jury, would you serve your kids pink-in-the-middle burgers, and AIBU for not wanting to??

Oblamov
Erm, I mentioned DH and I have worked in food safety related roles. Maybe you skipped that part, although a quick google would tell you.
Have you never heard of e-coli?Hmm

Beef is fine to eat raw - steak tartare anyone?!

The handling and preparation of beef for steak tartar is a world away from a lump of mince or a mass-produced burger though Confused

I like my steak blue and a good steak tartar can be a joy, but I would never touch a pink burger. Completely different.

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/04/2018 20:27

For balance against all the hysteria, I've been eating raw mince out of the packet for years and have never been ill.

I should do a one woman experiment to see how far I can push it because I could do with losing a few pounds.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/04/2018 20:28

I remember having a similar argument with dh about burgers he was burning on the outside and leaving raw in the middle and shoving in buns at a family barbecue.

Unfortunately (?) none of his family were poisoned so he took that to mean he was right. Gah.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 20:28

Not sure why theHmmface ecoli food poisoning is well documented with mince, and referenced on this thread

lookingforaline18 · 06/04/2018 20:28

Well I have to eat all meat well done so any sign of pink would put me right off. I definitely wouldn't give my child meat that wasn't cooked all the way through so on that note YANBU.

goose1964 · 06/04/2018 20:28

If you want a pink burger you have to be very sure of the provenance of the beef. The restaurants that serve pink burgers can trace the beef from the abattoir to the kitchen. If you buy pre prepared burgers or even the mince ready made they need to be brown, and don't even get me started on pink pork. My grandfather was a butcher and was very knowledgeable about how meat should be cooked

bluebell1981 · 06/04/2018 20:29

I had this exact same argument with my DH a few years ago Grin! Google was my friend and described the reasons (as others have outlined) why a burger differs from a steak.

Unihorn · 06/04/2018 20:30

www.nhs.uk/conditions/food-poisoning/causes/

"Escherichia coli, often known as E. coli, are bacteria found in the digestive systems of many animals, including humans. Most strains are harmless but some can cause serious illness.

Most cases of E. coli food poisoning occur after eating undercooked beef (particularly mince, burgers and meatballs) or drinking unpasteurised milk."

For those still struggling to understand.

I have been eating raw mince out of the packet for years

What? Why? As a snack? Doesn't it taste like cold wet socks?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 20:33

I agree unihorn but I fear folk will still pop up saying I eat bleu steak, pink meat

Weebo · 06/04/2018 20:33

That's not balance Barbarao, that's madness. :o

When did you first decide mince from the packet seemed like a good snack?

My dad once ate a raw sausage from the fridge when he was young and very stoned but he didn't make a habit of it.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/04/2018 20:37

Sorry but Grin

Eveforever · 06/04/2018 20:37

I love very rare steak, but I've always thought that it wasn't safe to eat pink burgers, so I don't. I agree that steak and mince meat are not the same.

I have a friend that gets very defensive and grumpy if she even thinks you are criticising her, so your husband's reaction is annoying but not unusual.

As anybody mentioned yet that you can get worms from eating raw or undercooked meat?!

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 20:37

Thanks unihorn Grin

Ilost is your DH my DH? Grin They sound remarkably similar!

Anyway, burger gate is over and we're about to watch a movie and have a 🍷 or two.

Thanks for all your input, glad the consensus was that I wasn't being totally unreasonable!

Enjoy your wine and movie OP.

Don't mind if some of us hang around and find out about Barbarao's mince pinching, do you? :o

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 20:45

Knock yourselves out Grin
I'll be checking back later myself for that update!

Having just done a qualification in Food hygiene I can tell you that the advice given to those working in the industry is that burgers should be cooked thoroughly all the way through.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/04/2018 20:47

I'm worried about Barbara. She's awfully quiet and I'm concerned she's tucked into a dodgy batch.

e1y1 · 06/04/2018 20:48

I put this on the other thread too, but anyone thinking rare burgers are ok, should watch

savagebaggagemaster · 06/04/2018 20:57

I also remember my ds, who was 7 at the time, being served a 'steak hâché' in France. I thought that there was beetroot in the salad. I looked more closely; it wasn't beetroot juice, it was blood running from the burger onto the plate. Sad I swiftly took that one away and he ate a Nutella crêpe instead!

DaisyGiveMeYourAnswerDoo · 06/04/2018 21:02

Placemarking to hear wtf barbs been smoking Grin

Missingstreetlife · 06/04/2018 21:17

You can get ecoli from a bag of salad. It's poo.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 21:22

Yes!i had food poisoning with unwashed salad in med

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/04/2018 21:28

In The Mediterranean? That could have been caused by salad washed in the local tap water.
