Pink burger

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 18:16

Please help settle an argument.

DH just cooked burgers and I noticed part-way through dinner that 5 year old DSs was pink on the inside.

I mentioned it was pink and DH said it would be fine. I disagreed and DH got all defensive saying they're always like that and we've eaten them pink before (not me, I have my steak well done!) and it would be fine.

I said I'd rather he didn't eat any more and got up to make something else for DS and DH said I was being ridiculous.

So MN jury, would you serve your kids pink-in-the-middle burgers, and AIBU for not wanting to??

I think saying op I'd rather he was eating that is v restrainted giving it was practically still mooing

LemonysSnicket · 06/04/2018 20:02

Also meat shouldn’t be kept in the freezer for more than 3 months absolute max.
So frozen burger raw = bad
Mince not cooked through =bad
Meat kept too long in the freezer = bad

maclinks · 06/04/2018 20:02

I agree steak fine burgers have to take great care, strictly they should be very freshly minced within a short time fame and then eaten quickly so unless you have a mincer at home, or eating in a restaurant they have chefs trained to prepare and are cooking them straight away there will be a risk , and with children the risk of serious illness will be magnified. For adults they can choose if they want to take the risk, a child cannot
www.healthline.com/health/worst-foodborne-illness-outbreaks#eme-coliem

have a look at this 100 struck ill and 4 died from burgers...Think carefully

Littlegoth · 06/04/2018 20:03

Should be pink on the inside - it’s beef! It’s a crime to serve it as anything except medium rare.

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 20:04

It all happened in a matter of seconds. DS had picked up the second half when I noticed and said something.

Yes, I have a sensitivity to eating raw meat, I already mentioned that. I can't stand any pink at all. DH can eat raw steak & burgers 'til the cows come home, that's his choice. But I don't want to risk the DC getting food poisoning, so had to say something before DS took a bite. I didn't have time to rehearse my script Confused

Maybe I should have said 'oh that's a bit pink, let me take that away and grill it a bit longer DS' but I just said the first thing that came to mind.

LemonysSnicket · 06/04/2018 20:04

@Littlegoth it is not a steak. Fucking research what you’re eating. chefs would not eat their burgers undercooked unless freshly ground.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 20:06

No littlegoth.theres a fundamental difference between beef steak and minced beef
Do you understand the difference?beef is simply the type of meat
Steak or minced is the cut & preparation of the meat.

maclinks · 06/04/2018 20:06

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Jack_in_the_Box_E._coli_outbreak

explains the ourbreak was contamination and that it was undercooked.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/04/2018 20:07

I see your point. I would have said something if the burger didn't looked cooked. As others say it's not worth the risk of an upset stomach.

I think your dh was being really annoying- doing that thing of arguing back with a load of bollocks just so he didn't have to admit he was wrong. Sad
In an ideal world he would have stuck it back in the pan for a few minutes and no problemo.

I suppose we're all guilty of being defensive when criticised sometimes, it's the end of a long week, tempers are a bit frayed. Don't LTB just yet.

It's a shame your ds had to sit there listening to all that just because it made a crappy atmosphere and he might now be suspicious of his dad's cooking and be totally put off burgers!

Weebo · 06/04/2018 20:07

There is absolutely nothing wrong with how you worded it in the first place OP.

LizzieDarcy1907 · 06/04/2018 20:14

When I used to eat meat as a teenager, I was served a very pink burger in France once. I was violently sick for 2 days after. It was the last meat burger I ever ate!

yasmin0147 · 06/04/2018 20:14

Mince can’t be pink, you’ll get food poisoning

Catastropheeee · 06/04/2018 20:15

It is the end of a long week of school holidays! You are spot on. He did that annoying thing of refusing to accept I had a point just to save face. I wasn't accusing him of deliberately trying to poison DS, just pointing out that it was undercooked. He took it too personally.

He has admitted it was too undercooked now though, and that he'll be more careful with burgers in future. I still can't believe he's happily served them pink before though! Shock

Maybe I should have said 'oh that's a bit pink, let me take that away and grill it a bit longer DS' but I just said the first thing that came to mind.

Yeah fair enough, sorry. Long day!

Tailfeather · 06/04/2018 20:19

If you order burgers somewhere decent they will always ask you how you want it cooked and will serve it as pink - or well done - as you like.

Stinkbomb · 06/04/2018 20:19

Beef is fine to eat raw - steak tartare anyone?!
I like mine blue, not even rare - same for beef any way.
Would only be different if it was beef & pork mince mixed.

Unihorn · 06/04/2018 20:20

Mince is not the same as steak.for the last fucking time.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 20:21

Tailfeather asking how how you want burger cooked is fundamentally misunderstanding food preparation. It’s not a measure of good or gourmet dining to be asked

Oblomov18 · 06/04/2018 20:22

"DH can eat raw steak & burgers 'til the cows come home, that's his choice. But I don't want to risk the DC getting food poisoning, so had to say something "

Food poisoning? Hmm
Really?
Which one do you think you dc would get?
Campylobacter?
Salmonella?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/04/2018 20:22

Yeah my husband does that sometimes- refusing to admit I'm right to save face, urghh so annoying, grumpy git! (sorry I'm probably projecting now Grin)
Being magnanimous, I suppose he felt a bit undermined in front of his son?

Hope you can put pink burger gate behind you now WineWine

No problem. We had the DC away at friends for a few days there, and sharing a room with them meant very little sleep for us - I never realised they were such noisy, restless sleepers! I am ready for my bed already!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 20:24

With meat it’s ecoli 0157

DairyisClosed · 06/04/2018 20:24

They are supposed to be served pink in the middle. It really shouldn't be a problem if you have a stored the meat properly. People eat steal tartar all the time and live to tell the tale. I wouldn't worry too much.

Unihorn · 06/04/2018 20:25

Oblomov18
Yes the DC could get food poisoning from minced meat not thoroughly cooked. Because it's mince.

DairyisClosed · 06/04/2018 20:25

Obviously this is provided that you buy decent meat. There have been safety warnings about cheap imported pork and hep E
