There was a thread similar to this a while back that I can't find now but I promise I'm not a copy cat troll!

Last night i noticed that the loft hatch was open in the babies room. I definitely didn't do it, OH says he didn't do it. The cupboard under the TV where the electric and wifi box are was open yesterday, again, neither of us had opened it.
I called the police to report this last night and explained that I'm often alone with an 8 week old baby and that the house is really not secure (rental). Their next steps were to raise with their team manager and to contact me within 24 hours if they felt they needed to take it further, put it on record if not. Presumably this would be useful when I've been murdered in my sleep but whatever.
I've called the lettings agent who would get someone round to look at the locks that aren't locking.
I've heard nothing back from either. My life has no value clearly.

I've been blamed twice in the last fortnight for leaving a poo in the toilet by OH when I definitely, definitely haven't. Clothes have gone missing presumed lost somewhere and the wifi speed has dropped significantly over the last few weeks.

I'm concerned.

I have a CCTV style baby monitor that wasn't being used that I've set up in the living room to monitor anyone getting in which I thought was a pretty genius idea but forgot that you can talk the other way too. Tonight I'm pretty sure someone was talking through it. OH is working away but swears that it wasn't him. I need to be brave enough to get close enough to unplug it now.

There is access through the lofts from the other houses and only one key was given from the lettings agent so presumably another key is somewhere else out there. I can always hear footsteps from the houses either side of me which used to be reassuring when I was by myself. NOT ANY MORE!

Tomorrow I'm permanently closing both loft hatches, changing all locks and learning self defence. In the meantime help me get through the night. What can I do to make it as safe as I can? or channel Kevin from Home Alone And can I do anything on the wifi to see if someone else has signed up to mine?

I was a lot braver in the daylight...

I've got my baby asleep on me and I don't think she'll be much use if I'm confronted.

That's a good question scoop! How are they getting back up?

My place is pretty low ceilings and I don't think I could get up there without a ladder or even be climbing on the bed. 🤔

dejectedharry · 06/04/2018 00:17

@ScoopsMama our ceilings in our house are really low and if your tall you can easily touch the ceiling. My DP can pull himself upto our loft with no ladder. So it is possible to get into some lofts without a ladder.

stayanotherday · 06/04/2018 00:17

Because it's the poo troll?!

CrustyCob · 06/04/2018 00:17

Perhaps shoes with giant springs on them?
Or they lower themselves up and down on a rope?
Or they bring their own ladder?
Hmm

Cify · 06/04/2018 00:18

This is a bit left field - do you have gas? Do you have a working carbon monoxide alarm?

DiegoMadonna · 06/04/2018 00:18

Grappling hook

RunMummyRun68 · 06/04/2018 00:19

Nope. It's the partner

There's nobody in the loft!

RunMummyRun68 · 06/04/2018 00:20

Has anyone been following the 'david' story on twitter?

Mxyzptlk · 06/04/2018 00:20

Stand on chest of drawers which is handily near? That how I get into our loft.

BMW6 · 06/04/2018 00:22

Gosh.
How extraordinary.

stayanotherday · 06/04/2018 00:23

RunMummyRun68 - No, what's it about?

Grammarist · 06/04/2018 00:23

All very odd. Barricade yourself in or go elsewhere.

Wetwashing00 · 06/04/2018 00:26

Just read this out to everyone at work, they are crapping it just thinking about it.

Go to your mums

BuffyBee · 06/04/2018 00:29

Some rows of terraced houses have joint loft space.
I think someone from another house has come in to get the password off the router, had a nosy round, pinched a jacket, used the loo and then left again.
I've heard of people being robbed by people getting into their house through the loft from an empty house next door.
I hope you've left the house OP.
I would get the loft hatch bolted.

Thattwatoverthere · 06/04/2018 00:32

I'm at my mums and feeling a lot better! She stayed awake and waited up for me to get here to get the baby set up Smile

Will try to address everything!

It's absolutely real but I can see why you'd wonder why I was there still, it turns out that in daylight I'm a fuck load braver than nighttime. What seemed like a CF move this morning fast turned into a horror that someone had been in my house when it got to making bottles and baby to bed time.
The baby is still in with me, she does have a nursery set up for when she's older though and that's where the loft is. We have 2 loft spaces - one for the main house and a smaller one where the back bedroom and bathroom is. The main loft is closed off as a lot of houses have conversions up there but the other one is too small and has a gap through. My OH did check up there and there's no evidence of anyone living there but he saw the gap that someone could fit through. Annoyingly we have a ladder stored in the room which I've now moved. Neighbours seem like the logical explanation but it's hard to know which one if you can get through the whole row. I thought it was illegal too TBH.
The voice was from the monitor - you can do two way conversation and hear it clicking if the camera is moved remotely. I know people can hack into them but it seemed pretty unlikely. I'm as confident as I can be that it wasn't him. He's working away across the country but is home tomorrow so will get onto securing the loft and that'll make me feel a lot better. I made him go when I was feeling all brave and he's been checking in on me all night.
I'll get back onto the agency tomorrow to chase them coming round.
Wifi password is on the router still. I'll change it when everything is secure but I don't really want to invite them back to get the new one.
I think that was everything! Thanks everyone for confirming that it is indeed a very strange situation and not me overreacting!
I now just don't want the neighbours to know that I know...

stayanotherday it's all on twitter under dear David I think.... basically a man living alone in the US noticed odd things. So he set a camera up.......and,well, what he captured is horrifying

Pretty sure it's not real but he's had millions of us hooked on next instalment

Mxyzptlk · 06/04/2018 00:37

Could be an extra "lodger" in someone else's loft, or a CF neighbour.

I'm glad you're out of there!

RunMummyRun68 · 06/04/2018 00:38

Mans name is Adam Ellis on twitter

IronicWittyUsername · 06/04/2018 00:39

Omg scary

RunMummyRun68 · 06/04/2018 00:41

But 'he's' been in a few times over past fortnight..... why? Makes no sense

Clothing has gone missing....why?

Small gap in the loft wall....teenager? Kids?

How did they know a ladder was in the room to use? Was it moved under the hatch?

More questions than answers here!

Thattwatoverthere · 06/04/2018 00:48

I'm glad to be out of there too! Looking forward to the OH getting home tomorrow and Fort Knoxing the place but it's nice to be in a detached house for the night Grin.

Lots of questions I agree, I wish I knew and I'd love it if forensics came and fingerprinted etc but I doubt it's a priority unless something high value was taken or if we were in at the time.

All I know is that the loft hatch had been left off by someone (plank of wood rather than a hinged one) and other weird things happening made a lot of sense. The ladder might have just been convenient but there's a change unit you could climb up if you had enough upper body strength for the last haul up there.

If nothing else it's made me more aware of security. And more Hmm of my neighbours.

I had a shared loft space in the first house I bought. The first thing I did was get a bolt fixed. It was very disconcerting to be a young woman on her own with unsecured access. I didn't any worrying signs though.

PrincessHairyMclary · 06/04/2018 01:19

Has it been windy where you are? My loft hatch cover moves when it's really windy, scared the crap out of me the first time. Doesn't explain the other random things though

blueskypink · 06/04/2018 01:24

Did you leave anything across the hatch (tape/thread/tissue) so you can see if it has moved when you get home tomorrow?
