To be a bit jealous of my mat cover?

I work 4 days a week in a small office. My colleagues and clients are all saying how lovely the person covering my mat leave is. I feel a bit jealous...AIBU?

Not at all, that is a perfectly natural reaction.

weecherubc · 04/04/2018 19:43

Thank you, I hope they're not too disappointed when I return haha

YANBU

I think it's perfectly natural to worry that your cover is more liked than you are. It's a strange scenario as it can feel like they are covering you as opposed to your role so no wonder you feel jealous when they seem to be well liked. I always found with things like this though that people move on quickly and soon people won't really think about your mat cover and will just treat you like all other permanent members of staff.

SlimGin · 04/04/2018 19:52

I'm worried about this too. I already know the person they are considering for my mat cover and I'm pretty sure she's better than me.

AverageSnowflake · 04/04/2018 19:53

This was me exactly when I was on mat leave! I was so worried that they would prefer her over me but luckily they did not. Grin

Now I've been back for a few months and it's like I never left.

MistyMinge · 04/04/2018 19:53

YANBU I think it's perfectly normal to feel like that.

topcat2014 · 04/04/2018 19:54

Try to enjoy your leave and not worry. (easier said than done, I suppose)

Thistlebelle · 04/04/2018 19:54

But surely they are just saying this to make sure you aren’t worrying about Work coping in your absence?

JessTessMess · 04/04/2018 19:57

yanbu, bit it doesn’t matter really, it’s better they’re all happy and you don’t have a disaster awaiting you on your return. Your job is being kept open so there is nothing really to worry about and speaking for myself, I just didn’t care as much about work post DC, that was one of the big benefits of having them.

Neverender · 04/04/2018 19:58

Omg I remember this well! I watched "The Replacement" when I'd just started Mat leave and it was NOT a good idea! Shock

Neverender · 04/04/2018 19:59

Seriously though, I was worried about this. Returned and they'd done a great job but everyone in the team moaned at me about them. Left 2 months later for a better job...he got my old one. It all worked out for the best...

notacooldad · 04/04/2018 20:00

Did you not watch The Replacement with Vicky McClure ladt year?
Grin Smile

notacooldad · 04/04/2018 20:01

Ha! You had the same thoughts as me Never!

Honey456 · 04/04/2018 20:02

I’m due to go on mat leave soon and have this fear!

Anyone who cares about their job would feel the same :)

I agree though people usually move on quickly. It’s very much out of sight out of mind when someone leaves.

ToriRay · 04/04/2018 20:03

Yes! This is so normal! never this is exactly why midwives should give pregnant women a list of things not to watch! Grin

millyevans · 04/04/2018 20:09

After I came back from mat leave my mat cover was given a permanent job on a higher grade than me - that's how much they loved her. 9 months later she was my manager. 😳

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 04/04/2018 20:11

YANBU!
We've all been there. I also got a job by replacing the maternity-leave lady, so you'll never know how you'll feel in a few months.

troodiedoo · 04/04/2018 20:12

Bloody hell @millyevans that's harsh Flowers

lattewith3shotsplease · 04/04/2018 20:12

@millyevans.......bloody hail..Flowers

MoodyTwo · 04/04/2018 20:13

Yep I watched the replacement too before going on may leave 😂
It's normal don't worry x

llangennith · 04/04/2018 20:16

They’re probably relieved she’s ok. Could’ve had anyone foisted in them.

MumofBoysx2 · 04/04/2018 20:18

They might be saying that to put your mind at rest in case you were worried about it.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 04/04/2018 20:19

+ve way looking at it,you’ll return to every running smoothly
A locum covered my mat leave and was lovely and well liked - win,win

CeeCeeEnnEss · 04/04/2018 20:39

My old boss liked my cover more than me. I decided to move jobs internally!
