Alternatives to E45 moisturizer

JellicleCat · 04/04/2018 17:12

I seem to have developed an allergic reaction to E45 cream after using it with a steroid cream, as suggested by my GP for a skin problem. The skin problem has gone and I've stopped using the steroid, but my skin is very dry so I kept on with the E45, however now it's stinging and a bit itchy when I use it.

Anyone got any good ideas for an alternative? I wondered about almond oil but would prefer a cream?

Child Farm moisturiser is amazing! Not too thick but keeps my dermatitis from flaring up.

Biffsboys · 04/04/2018 17:17

Dream cream from lush is fab

Doublebase cream. My kid was prescribed it for eczema and I've used it ever since. You can get it otc in Boots.

Aveeno

WantingMuchMore · 04/04/2018 17:24

Aveeno. All the way. E45, doublebase and emollients I find cause my skin to sting and itch. Useful for washing with but not so good as leave on moisturisers. Ive had severe eczema for over 40 years and the last few since I discovered aveeno my hands actually dont crack and bleed!

Do you know which ingredient sets you off? I sometimes have problems with lanolin. At the moment I'm using a huge tub of aqueous cream that I got from the pound shop.

Aaaaliya · 04/04/2018 17:26

My daughter uses cetraben

I have a severe skin condition and use either aveeno or Dream Cream. Dream Cream is a bit too heavy for my face but is so soothing for everywhere else and I can even use it on cracked skin. I have to use prescription creams a good few hours before hand though. I never mix them.

I've recently discovered dead sea salt soap. I use the dead sea salt in my baths but the black soap is a great alternative to shower gels.

Another vote for child farm moisturiser it's worked wonders on my son's eczema

Ilikepinkso · 04/04/2018 17:36

I purchased some child farm baby moisturiser from boots for my dry cracked hands after reading glowing reviews on Amazon. I really like it.

KirstenRaymonde · 04/04/2018 17:40

Try Lush Dream Cream. I have allergy prone skin and never know what will set it off, so I usually use a combination of other things but if my skin plays up I always go back to Dream Cream for a while until it calms down. Comes in a big tub and lasts ages.

KirstenRaymonde · 04/04/2018 17:40

Should note I use Dream Cream all over my face and find it perfect as my skin is very dry, it’s not heavy at all. Tub E45 is much thicker.

Katyb1310 · 04/04/2018 17:42

Aveeno or oilatum but particularly Aveeno, it's cleared my eczema right up and it was a horrible mess before x

HidingFromTheWorld · 04/04/2018 17:45

I used to use E45 before it started aggravating my skin, then Cetraben and have been using Aveeno for four years. The GP that prescribed it had had impressive success using it on her son’s eczema.

My skin has never been better. I rarely have to use my topical steroid creams. And I say that as a child of the seventies who spent many weeks hospitalised in Great Ormond Street Hospital with the most horrendous eczema, which has only improved over the last few years.

RocknRolla · 04/04/2018 18:16

Aveeno

Freshprincess · 04/04/2018 18:22

Aveeno. Cleared my sons eczema to practically nothing. I use it as well as I get dry flaky skin on my legs and its brilliant. Smells nicer than E45 as well.

You can get it on prescription but it's not too expensive to buy in Boots.

SaucyJane · 04/04/2018 18:24

Aveeno - brilliant stuff!

BasilTheCat · 04/04/2018 18:26

Aveeno!
My little boy has eczema and reacts to E45 but Aveeno works well.
It's cheap in Costco if you have membership.

TitaniumSodiumBorate · 04/04/2018 18:34

Diprobase cream or ointment

JellicleCat · 04/04/2018 18:45

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm going to try Aveeno, and if that doesn't work Childs Farm and Dream Cream.

Aveeno - and you can get it on prescription.

AnnaMagnani · 04/04/2018 18:51

E45 is a poor moisturiser, it shouldn't be recommended ever really as it's so mild.

And aqueous cream is not a moisturiser at all. It's a soap substitute at best, and even then should be avoided. As a moisturiser it's very very mild and it contains SLS which irritates most people with ezcema and makes dry skin worse.

Doublebase, Aveeno, Dream cream, Childs Farm, Moogoo - the answer is different for everyone but these are always popular.

Yogagirl123 · 04/04/2018 18:52

Mixa is fantastic, I brought mine in Superdrug, it’s paraben and fragrance free, really nice and helped my eczema.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/04/2018 18:56

Aveeno

I don’t have eczema but do suffer with very dry skin that can be very itchy and sensitive at times

The face cream and face wash is excellent too
