Alternatives to E45 moisturizer

JellicleCat · 04/04/2018 17:12

I seem to have developed an allergic reaction to E45 cream after using it with a steroid cream, as suggested by my GP for a skin problem. The skin problem has gone and I've stopped using the steroid, but my skin is very dry so I kept on with the E45, however now it's stinging and a bit itchy when I use it.

Anyone got any good ideas for an alternative? I wondered about almond oil but would prefer a cream?

I second all the votes for Aveeno! I don't get on with E45 either, but have never had any problems with Aveeno.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/04/2018 19:17

Atrixo

ChodeofChodeHall · 04/04/2018 19:24

Aveeno and Dream Cream are brilliant. Also, some oats tied up in muslin chucked in the bath. Nothing containing petrolatum/mineral oil has ever made a scrap of difference to my kids' eczema but oats and oat products seem to do the trick.

I'm convinced that the only reason aqueous cream is so widely recommended is because it's dirt cheap!

dangermouseisace · 04/04/2018 19:35

I use weleda's skin food, which is oil based.

Another vote for Aveeno

jelliebelly · 04/04/2018 19:53

Aveeni - E45 is rubbish imo

jelliebelly · 04/04/2018 19:53

Oops Aveeno

worlybear · 04/04/2018 19:54

Moo goo is brilliant.( An Australian firm).
Sold in paydens chemist or on ebay.

MeSmallCoffee · 04/04/2018 20:02

I've found Udderly Smooth amazing. I used it after my skin dried out after chemo, and it's just incredible.

DD2017 · 04/04/2018 20:08

I had eczema as a child and got better over the years.
I'm allergic to LANOLIN and this is in a lot of beauty products. Try cutting that out and see if it makes a difference. Not sure if they're related but products with limonene or linalool tend to sting a bit.

  • Simple moisturiser is all I use now along with simple facewash etc. There are 2 kinds as well; light and rich.
Great price too!
  • Neutrogena hand cream if you have cracked hands too

Aveeno all the way!

missbonita · 04/04/2018 20:56

My face is currently buried under an inch thick layer of Aveeno - its heaven on my poor chapped sore face. Bliss.

IvorHughJarrs · 04/04/2018 22:49

Aveeno is not allowed on prescription by our CCG, it has to be bought OTC. They have a list of approved emollients but that is not on it

Avaricii · 04/04/2018 22:50

Aveeno. Amazing stuff- the prescription cream my DS has hurts his hands but Aveeno does the trick (and I use it too)

SadTrombone · 04/04/2018 22:53

Another vote for Dream Cream

CadyHeron · 04/04/2018 23:32

Aveeno's great. Also Diprobase but I'm not sure if that's prescription only or available without.
People have recommended Lush's Dream cream to me, but seeing as I'm allergic to parabens (known preservative and common skin irritant!) I've given that one a miss.

DaviesMum · 04/04/2018 23:33

Nivea Soft - cheap but smells divine, non-oily and doesn't dry out the skin.

Dermol is good but Aveeno is the better choice.

Dontknowwhatimdoinghere · 04/04/2018 23:43

Have you tried Body Shop Hemp moisturiser? I have very sensitive skin and started using this a few weeks ago, they recommended it to me in store and I've had no reaction to it at all.

ColdFeetAndHotCakes · 04/04/2018 23:44

Came on here to buck the trend a bit. I must have tried every moisturiser going for my eczema and nothing worked (I did raid Boots in desperation at one point and got a bottle of everything and anything), all of them needed applying several times a day/stung/made me itch/etc.

The only thing that works for me is using a flannel and bar of soap to exfoliate in the shower, followed by Lush's in shower body conditioner. A tub of the shower cream lasts me 6-8 weeks of daily showers and I don't have to moisturise at all now, skin stays soft and supple all day.

Gingaaarghpussy · 04/04/2018 23:51

Anything without liquid paraffin in.

Coconut oil works for me

WineIsMyMainVice · 04/04/2018 23:52

I’ve just discovered the O’Keefes itchy skin cream. It’s amazing. It said on the tube that it lasts 48 hours even after a shower and I thought ‘yeah right!’ But it actually does! You only need a little. It’s a bit pricey though £10but the tube is quite large.

Gingaaarghpussy · 04/04/2018 23:54

Soft white paraffin is a no go.
Also anything that threatens lanolin.
Kinda limits your choices
I discovered my allergy with germaloid cream.Shock

MinaPaws · 04/04/2018 23:56

Diprobase is a good basic, unscented cream suitable for severe dry skin.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 05/04/2018 14:09

Another vote for MooGoo.
I used it during radiotherapy with great success. I’m now using it on my scalp psoriasis as it gives great relief to the itching.
