I'm 45 and this year my long hair just looks awful. It's the texture of a horses tail thanks to me dying the greys at home. It's very, very thick and dry anyway...so now I must be 80% grey, it's worse.

I'm going to have to get the chop. I'm really nervous because though I am attractive, my jawline isn't what it was...last bob I had about 5 years ago drew attention to my jawline being less than sharp!

I am thinking of something a bit funky though....I'm not a particularly conservative dresser...more likely to be seen in big boots and slightly vintage clothing than anything expensive and posh.

What style?? I want some length on top! NOT a bob though.

It's pretty

41 here and boob length thick brown straight hair. In a pique of annoyance (and skintness) a couple of weeks ago I did the Mumsnet cut for the first time ever and it looks brilliant. I now have thick layers which have turned wavy by themselves and I can finally wear my hair down with pride! A few greys starting at the temples but now my hair can be worn down rather than up, they kind of blend in now instead of sticking out and being obvious.

I'm back! Update.

Been to hairdresser...she would not cut it off short. :(

She said it was too thick and she wasn't keen on such a massive change from long to so short....

She cut it in a lob which is much better...she's done it well but I am a bit meh about it to be honest as it's not a big change.

I think I;ll go somewhere else next month now it's in shape again and ask them to do it.

I think the most ageing thing is grey roots. I know lots of older women who dye at home and the grey roots always look bloody awful. My recommendation is lots of highlights and lowlights. I have my grey blended through with a bleach blonde, a caramel blonde and a brown. I only have to have it down every three months and it hardly costs anything at the hairdresser I isebb

I'm 47 and, until a year ago, I had my hair short but with a bit of length on top. I always thought my very thick hair was dead straight, until I started growing it and I now have some loose waves! It's now past my chin and I don't think I'll let it get any longer as I'm finding drying and styling it quite a chore. I have a few greys but they aren't bothering me yet so I don't need to colour it.

OP, do you have a college nearby with a salon for training students? They usually offer a full range of salon services at a fraction of the usual cost. That might help make colouring more easily accessible.

Bluesheep8 · 05/04/2018 08:36

I'm 44 and love mine. No grey whatsoever, never coloured it. It's naturally almost black (I'm half Irish) and cut in a short pixie cut which is low maintenance and suits me. There are lots if things about my appearance that I'm not happy with but my hair isn't one of them.

imonaplane · 05/04/2018 08:38

I consider myself to be vey lucky. I am 55 and my hair is long and quite straight - down to my bra strap. It is fine but there is a lot of it. I am very grey now and colour it myself but only do the whole head occasionally. I straighten it if I am going out and, up to now, has always been in good condition. I have it trimmed every 3 months and my hairdresser always comments on the fact that I have no split ends. I won't be cutting it short!

greengoose21 · 05/04/2018 09:01

44 here, and have recently discovered that only washing my hair every five days has totally transformed its condition. I used to do it every other day, if not daily.

Now, after years of box dye brown with ever encroaching greys, I'm gearing up the courage to do this. Crazy old lady time, here I come.

Ajas I know what you mean about "the sheer weight of it"
I just saw a women in the street about my age with amazing short hair. I had to ask her where she gets it done.

She told me the name of a barber. She said they are so much better at cutting!

I'm really tempted, she looked gorgeous!

AjasLipstick · 05/04/2018 15:52

50 funny you should say that because DH said the same thing! He said "try a barber...they're probably more confident about short hair...or a man's hairdresser."

I think the young woman was just too nervous as my untamed mane, as it was, seemed massive and crazed. she said once it was all done "Oh...it really calms down once it's been straightened a bit"

She was a good hairdresser but I feel meh about the cut...just boring.

I will find a stylist with more confidence I think.

Look for someone with a good cut and ask where they go.

AjasLipstick · 06/04/2018 03:00

Good tip 50 thanks. There are a few women at my DD"s school with good hair....good SHORT hair! At least I've got plenty left for the next stylist to play with!
