Flying when your clothes smell of weed

I am taking a close family members dd on holiday in a couple of weeks. She is 10 and really excited as it is her first holiday. The issue is that I am 99% sure her parents grow cannabis and her clothes smell of it. She stays with us frequently and even after washing her clothes there is still a lingering smell.

Please don't tell me to notify the police or social services. This is not what the thread is about. This little girl is not neglected, is very very loved, doing well at school etc. Her parents are people who have not had much luck in their lives, live in a universal credit area and constantly struggle for money (aside for every 3 months or so when they seem a bit better off which is another reason I suspect they are growing rather than smoking weed) . I will not be calling anyone about this. I love them all and feel helpless though I do help as much as I can with money, food, gifts of clothes etc for their dd.

My actual question is if I can smell weed on her clothes how on earth will we get through airport security.? I have bought her some new bits but simply cannot afford to replace her entire wardrobe for summer. Will we get stopped? Could this prevent us from flying even though we are not carrying anything? She is so looking forward to this holiday and selfishly so am I. Any advice would be really welcome. Thank you.

2-3 plants will produce a crop worth £3000 plus if they know what they're doing and if they have no decent extraction it could well stink the house out Em308 so they're not necessarily smoking around the DC. Glad she has you looking out for her OP, hope you all have a great holiday.

titchy · 02/04/2018 23:49

There's no way on earth that two or three plants in the attic will make her clothes smell that much. There's either a massive amount of growing going on very close to her, or the entire house stinks due to smoking.

OP they're smoking. A lot.

SeaToSki · 02/04/2018 23:58

Can you repack her clothes in airtight bags, and then put them in a suitcase with dryer sheets in too. In the US we have big zip lock food ones that I would use, but am not sure what you can get in the UK now. Another option is to ‘spill’ some fresh coffee grounds in the suitcase. When my DS vomited on a plane, the aircrew brought out the coffee packs and scattered it around. It was amazing at covering up the smell of vomit.

Social services don't remove kids for the parents' drug use unless the child is also being neglected. So there is really nothing to gain from reporting, sad as the situation may be, and I think your approach is fair.

Having 2-3 plants growing in the house won’t make your clothes stink, but the processing of those plants definitely will. The drying, curing, grinding...the smell gets in everything due to the oil. I’ve had to throw out clothes after an hour in a lab setting where a single plant was being processed.

Marijuana plants and marijuana smoke have very noticeably different scents. If the girls clothes don’t have a smoky scent to them then the smell isn’t from anyone smoking around her.

It won’t be a big problem at the airport. Worst case your luggage is searched. Just make sure you have a letter from her parents giving you permission to travel with her.

MagneticMan · 03/04/2018 00:08

I agree with @Em308 and @titchy that 2 or 3 plants wouldn't make her smell of weed.

With respect OP, you say she's close family so surely you would have seen/smelt the evidence when you went to her house?

Are you sure it's weed? I've known body odour (and MaccyD's) that smells a bit 'skunky' in the past.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 03/04/2018 00:14

I do actually use Aldi purple but the 2 in 1. It needs to be the gel one rather than the powder, the fragrance is stronger.

Herbalteahippie · 03/04/2018 00:16

Patchouli- lots of it. Incense/ oils/ soap.

Trust me on this xx

DiegoMadonna · 03/04/2018 00:17

I don't really get this thread. Smelling of weed isn't a crime. If none of you have any weed on you or in your bags, nothing will happen.

As an irrelevant aside, I travel by plane 2 or 3 times a year and don't remember ever even seeing a sniffer dog in an airport. I've certainly never been approached by one.

bunbunny · 03/04/2018 00:29

Persil Powergems is the best washing stuff to get smells out of laundry.

I use Aldi purple stuff or Sainsburys purple stuff or waitrose purple stuff normally, depending on where I end up shopping, all of which are great on normal clothing. But occasionally ds has accidents which are really smelly and the assorted own brand purple washing gels/liquids just don't touch it, despite being fab at everything else. I got some of the green persil powergems when they were introduced and very cheap, I now keep a bottle in as they really do make that much of a difference.

I often add some Lenor Unstoppables and some dettol laundry cleanser too for good measure although they're not really needed with the powergems.

But definitely worth trying if you really need to take the smell out of something.

This thread is pissing me off. Wake the fuck up there is more of an issue here than a few sprays of fucking febreeze is gonna fix! Poor kid.

ExFury · 03/04/2018 00:37

What do those suggesting the OP has a go at the parents imagine will happen when she does that?

The child will still be in the stinking house, but chances are the OP will be banned from her life. So no break from the house, no holidays and no one keeping an eye on her to make sure someone can step in if the situation gets worse.

Social services don't take kids away from parents who are growing cannabis so what do you think the OP doing anything other than finding away to make sure the child gets her holiday is going to do exactly?

Ladywillpower · 03/04/2018 00:39

I just find it incredibly sad that a child is walking around " with her clothes stinking of weed " & the only worry seems to be sniffer dogs picking it up at airport security.

GeorgeW78 · 03/04/2018 00:39

Could you accidentally leave her clothes at home and buy some where you're going - if it's cheaper there that is?! Otherwise some supermarket specials or can you borrow some from a family member? She won't need much.

FeralBeryl · 03/04/2018 00:43

Haven't RTFT OP, just popping by to say - what do you think all the Sunday night flights from Amsterdam stink of ? Wink Honestly, last time I went, I hadn't even been smoking / ingesting it at all but my clothes and hair all stunk. Honestly, wash her clothes (and her hair) load of fabric conditioner and have a nice time. Obviously you have other issues to address on return but I'm sure you'll ask about them if you need to.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/04/2018 00:45

Im not going to lie to you or sugar coat it. Theres a very high chance (not certainty) I must stress. You could get nabbed by the sniffer dogs and if you do customs will be searching your bags.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/04/2018 00:46

However if you have nothing on you.
You have nothing to worry about.

gingernut45 · 03/04/2018 00:50

Chances are it will be fine. Lots of friends of mine have flown carrying weed as well as recently smoking it and stinking of it. No issues. I think you will be ok and if you don't have anything illegal on you that you shouldn't then at worst it will be a pat down and checks on luggage.

Birdsgottafly · 03/04/2018 00:51

They're smoking it heavily around her. Which is why they are skint, they are possibly buying in bulk and possibly selling a bit.

Just be straight with the Parents and/or say that you want to be super organised and can you have her clothes to pack a few days before.

Then just wash her clothes with some of the suggestions.

DiegoMadonna, the problem is that the girl is the one who will show positive for cannabis, not the Adults, being stopped and questioned is going to be upsetting. If the child is the only one smelling of Weed and the people with her aren't her Parents, it could get complicated.

I now a few people who are heavy smokers and they are in denial about how they smell. It's about time the Parents had a wake up call. A conversation needs to be had. It isn't pleasant for the child to be put in this position.

There's sniffer dogs at Manchester Airport.

Wow2806 · 03/04/2018 00:57

Personally would try and have her stay the night before so she can shower wash hair at yours and a new outfit ready for travelling as a surprise/treat maybe from somewhere cheap like George. .. And would rewash and dry her clothes the night before.. And possibly a fresh suitcase if you dont want to be held up at security.

And to the negative posters. Child deserves a holiday. She doesnt make the decisions at home her parents do..

Juiceylucy09 · 03/04/2018 00:59

Poor child. It really depends where you are flying. I imagine Lanzarote America Australia yes you could be stopped. Spain not so much. If you are stopped the whole family will be searched and let go when they find no weed.

I am not sure if they would notify anyone, though if you can smell on the poor child clothes she's is inhaling it and however hard up her family are, and believe me I understand it is still wrong, the teachers will smell it and rightly report it.

Birdsgottafly · 03/04/2018 01:06

It's the child that will have to go through the Search, which needs to be done in the presence of a Parent, or Guardian, they will want the Parent's contact details.

Children and disabled people are now being used to carry drugs. My DD's DP smelt of it and she was made to take her sling off with her baby in it and they checked the baby.

They still traveled, but with a very frazzled baby and not speaking because it was so easily avoided.

It just isn't worth it, when it's avoidable. Be straight, or get the clothes days before.

Birdsgottafly · 03/04/2018 01:08

FeralBeryl your coming in, not going out.Same with Barcelona, who now has Coffee shops.

SickofThomasTheTank · 03/04/2018 01:36

So you're quite happy for the child to living around cannabis? If her clothes are smelling of it then she's inhaled it. Sod making the mother's life worse! What about making the child's life better?????!!!!!!!
