Flying when your clothes smell of weed

I am taking a close family members dd on holiday in a couple of weeks. She is 10 and really excited as it is her first holiday. The issue is that I am 99% sure her parents grow cannabis and her clothes smell of it. She stays with us frequently and even after washing her clothes there is still a lingering smell.

Please don't tell me to notify the police or social services. This is not what the thread is about. This little girl is not neglected, is very very loved, doing well at school etc. Her parents are people who have not had much luck in their lives, live in a universal credit area and constantly struggle for money (aside for every 3 months or so when they seem a bit better off which is another reason I suspect they are growing rather than smoking weed) . I will not be calling anyone about this. I love them all and feel helpless though I do help as much as I can with money, food, gifts of clothes etc for their dd.

My actual question is if I can smell weed on her clothes how on earth will we get through airport security.? I have bought her some new bits but simply cannot afford to replace her entire wardrobe for summer. Will we get stopped? Could this prevent us from flying even though we are not carrying anything? She is so looking forward to this holiday and selfishly so am I. Any advice would be really welcome. Thank you.

You could also put the clothes in the hold luggage in a vacuum bag?

I have a friend who smokes weed and it permeates his house and everything in it. Even when he's not smoking.
We once had a chat and he said I had let myself go and was always in scruffy clothes and looked like my hair needed washing. I explained that when I return from his house I undress in the porch and leave the clothes outside till the morning. I then take a shower and wash my hair. I have a job now where I cannot go in smelling like this. He was shocked and had no idea how strong the smell was.
You might get stopped at customs, but she will presumably not have weed on her so you shouldn't have any major problems. It will be disruptive though and it might be stressful for her. Would her parents consider chipping in with some new clothes.

This thread is weird as fuck. A ten year old girl is living in a house growing weed. Weed farms are dangerous due to the elctric circuits wired up to keep the plants warm constantly. Massive fire risk. As well as the kid and her property smelling of it and people are genuinly advising the op how to cover it up.

There's a difference between growing weed for your own consumption and a weed farm. OP is clear this is not a weed farm.

You can get children's clothes at carboots; some will sell for very cheaply (especially by those towards closing time, they'll shout out something ridiculously cheap like £1 for the lot, or sometimes they're free. I've come across a particular booter (removals firm) whose prices were 20p an item. Try to find a decent size boot where there's 100s of sellers. I'm sure you'll find a whole bagful for less than a tenner.

Are there any side-effects to weed growing on a child's development/health if it's not smoked?

Hey, I’m dying to know how it went, through the airport. In a similar situation myself soon

Don't know if this has been suggested but vac pac everything in those vacuum bags. This should contain the smell.

But make sure the outside is scrubbed completely clean, or the transfer from hands to bag will be picked up ....

Are they vegetarians?
I know some vegetarians that smell of weed and it's down to consuming a lot of a certain vegetable. I can't remember which one now (I'm off to google it again)

Oh right sorry Martha. You're right let's not pretend there isn't a horrible dark side to not only the organised cannabis industry but for users and their families as well.
Like alcohol, cannabis can be used recreationally and sensibly or it can become a massive problem or an addiction.

I get that ilost i meant posters in general including someone who claims to grow weed themselves and gave me a funny look when i said skunk was worse.

Sounds like you have good advice on the washing & speaking to the family. I wish very much that both go well.

I already apologised for making a flippant comment about posters overdramatising. Sad
I just don't think OP is asking for generalised comments on the far reaching consequences of the cannabis industry.

There is a vast difference between growing weed at home for your own supply and the cannabis industry as part of organised crime.
I'm really not trying to ridicule anyone just point out that distinction.

If you have noticed her smelling of weed then I would imagine school have. We stayed in a holiday house once that stank a lot like that but it turned out it was were wetsuits hung. They don't surf do they?
I doubt with a family not smelling of weed, she'd be singled out, but I'm not sure you should put up with her just stinking of weed...

There is some flippant comments on here. Some of us live with this shit day in day out and see how it affects people. Of course many people see it as a zero effect on anyone drug and riddicule those of us who know the opposite.

freeing the trafficked slave who was looking after the plants at the same time.

If that happened, it would be a large scale commercial grow (possibly a decoy from the real thing, which won't have smelled ...). Exactly the reason so may people grow their own: to avoid going anywhere near dealers.

Apologies I'll retract my rather flippant comment about people basing their thoughts on crime dramas.

I was trying to highlight the fact that posters were being overly dramatic over an OP who said her child relative smelt of weed and her parents "might" grow it, she wasn't sure but they never had any money. Hardly big time dealers.

I get your point, it's not a victimless crime. In fact that's one of the reasons cannabis should be legalised so as not to force it underground.
I haven't smoked it myself for years though, that's not my agenda.

What is this strange notion that dealers with knives will start hanging around the premises, stabbing each other? Is this based on watching police dramas on ITV?

Nope. In my case it’s based on the fact my completely innocent neighbour was robbed at knifepoint by criminals looking for ‘the bud’ (eg: where’s the bud man, tell me where you’ve got the bud or you’ll get shanked).

This was because two doors away a house was being used as a weed growing factory and word of that had got out to some dodgy associates who had decided to steal their crop. Fortunately for the growers they’d been suspicious enough not to be entirely honest about the location for their crop so said associates robbed the wrong house. Unfortunately for the growers it also meant the police could no longer turn a blind eye and had to raid it freeing the trafficked slave who was looking after the plants at the same time.

Honestly it annoys me these idiots who pretend these are victimless crimes akin to having an allotment because they’re apparently to stoned to notice the link to organised crime and human trafficking

Last time I flew, I decided I couldn’t risk flying with a family member’s backpack, fresh back from a trip from a festival and smelling similarly “fragrant”. I didn’t want to buy a new one but, after leaving the offending luggage in a closed room overnight, decided I would have to!

For those saying sniffer dogs don’t operate for holiday destinations, I have had the sniffer dogs go over the queue at the gate twice. Once at Gatwick when going to Orlando 4 years ago and once at Stansted when going to Naples 5 years ago.
However when a group of us came back from Amsterdam we didn’t see one (and half of the group had used cannabis legally whilst out there)

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 03/04/2018 15:50

It's quite likely they don't smell it in their own house. Like the advert- they've gone nose blind.

As mentioned though, unless there were other concerns a child smelling of smoke or cannabis on it's own wouldn't be investigated as a safe guarding issue.

Report
Aragog · 03/04/2018 15:46

As another poster said, maybe they are not aware of the smell if they live with it everyday. I

We can smell it quite easily, even when a daily occurrence and yes, we do report it. However, unless there are other factors, then it may not be followed up with parents, etc. at the time.
