To not want my flat to stink of weed?

Flat next door likes to smoke weed AND marlboro reds constantly. They smoke them on their little outdoor patio which sticks out a bit further than my bedroom window (we’re on ground floor). It means that as they stand outside all the smoke blows behind them and directly into my flat via my vents in the brickwork and my shoddy windows.

They’ve got two tiny babies who I see all the time, it seems to just be the Dad smoking the weed but I see the Mum smoking too. I don’t want to knock on their door and ask them to stop it as i don’t want to cause an atmosphere, but also don’t want to leave a faceless note in their letterbox. Just feel so sad for the kids, if my bedroom stinks like drug den after 5 mins, then no doubt the smell goes back into their flat too. It’s driving me mad!

Live and let live in flats

Firstimefreaked · 02/04/2018 21:59

Contact 111 and the police will give them a warning at the very least it might stop them constantly smoking.

NewYearNewMe18 · 02/04/2018 22:02

the police will give them a warning
No they wont.

Nicknacky · 02/04/2018 22:03

Don’t phone 111.

Just go speak to them, you don’t need to mention the cannabis. Just say the smoke is disturbing you and can they move elsewhere.

There is very very little the police will do for someone smoking a joint in their house.

Pinkmexicanskull · 02/04/2018 22:07

@fourfuckssake4 I don’t think just because you live in a flat that you have to put up with something so antisocial. I’m not a massive prude, ive smoked before. But it’s day and night- it’s constant. And the design of our flats is such that when they’re stood on their small patio, they’re blowing it directly into my bedroom. Normal cigarette smoke I could just about deal with, but cannabis smoke is so fucking horrible.

Don’t want to get police involved. Not least because I live in a part of SE London where police aren’t particularly warmly welcomed and I don’t want to piss anyone off. I live alone and don’t want to get a reputation for calling them in

To be honest, the police won’t be the slightest bit interested anyway.

Just go speak to them.

Easter Grin at calling NHS 111

Pinkmexicanskull · 02/04/2018 22:13

@herculesupatree it’s hard to describe but the patio they smoke on is no bigger than a 2x2 of regular size paving slabs. It’s tiny. The door they open to smoke is the living room patio door. The reason my bedroom stinks is because the smoke comes in our shit double glazing as well as through my vents. If it makes my room stink then no doubt it makes the children’s living area stink too. The flats are 1 bedroom so fairly small. It just doesn’t feel like a particularly nice way to bring small kids up.

I didnt like to be the one to point that out lol.

Nhs 111 must get mightily confused sometimes!!!!

WorraLiberty · 02/04/2018 22:16

If you're going to mention it to them, it's best to leave the kids and the weed out of the conversation.

Just explain that the smoke is entering your property and see if they can do anything about it.

It's doubtful though as the design of many flats/terraced houses mean smells from nextdoor, will always affect others.

Ballora · 02/04/2018 22:19

Yanbu, I've had this problem before when I lived in a flat. It stinks!

Juiceylucy09 · 02/04/2018 22:24

I would speak to them, They probably are not aware of the smell going in to the vents. I would not call the police until I spoke to them. I am sure the police would get involved if you made an official complaint.

Pop a note in the door if easier, just say as above if there is no change speak to the police.

LegallyBrunet · 02/04/2018 22:37

YANBU. I live in student halls of residence and one of my flatmates started smoking weed in the flat after Christmas and it stinks the entire flat out and makes my head hurt. I’ve tried raising it with him and he just denies it despite the smell coming from his room and when I raised it with my letting agent they were reluctant to do anything despite smoking on the premises being illegal

SharronNeedles · 02/04/2018 22:43

Explain this to them, not us.
