To think this is too long a wait (NHS)

Two weeks ago I noticed blood in my urine, and it just got worse so now whenever I pee, it's the colour of red wine.

I saw my GP straight away, who referred me to a Urologist.

The appointment isn't until late April...

The referral was made mid March.

It's suppose to be urgent?

AIBU to be worried and think this is a long wait?

I have 0 other symptoms, no pain when peeing, no stinging. Just joint pain

do you know if you have been referred via the 2 week cancer pathway? I thought they have to see you within 2 weeks. But agree, doesn't sound right. can you go back to GP and double check how you were referred?

brownelephant · 01/04/2018 10:44

yanbu
but the nhs is really struggling keeping up with the demand.
good luck!

TakeMeToTheFresh · 01/04/2018 10:46

sais I'm not sure, I wasn't really given much explanation or even spoken about what it could be.

The urine analysis came back from the lab and there's no infection there so we know that much

It wasn't possibly to detect anything via the dip dye test as the blood was so evident, it discoloured the whole thing

Sounds OTT but it's quite alarming to see dark red urine down the toilet every time you a wee Sad

Should be within 2weeks, I’ve just had the same, had cystoscopy 5 days after Gp visit and ultrasound scan a week later. All fine btw, nothing found. Given that yours is visible heamaturia I’m surprised they are not acting quicker, maybe give the hospital a ring and ask if they can ring you if there’s any cancellations?

Bluelady · 01/04/2018 10:49

The joint pain as well would be frightening me a lot. I really don't want to scare you but this sounds as if you need to be seen quickly. If I were you I'd go back to the GP and ask them to push for an immediate appointment. Your peace of mind is important here.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/04/2018 10:50

I don't think visible blood; with no other concerning symptoms, is enough for a fast cancer referral. Mid April isn't too bad for a standard one; I don't think.

I've had both, sadly, I know it's worrying! I hope it resolves Thanks

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 01/04/2018 10:50

Joint pain? Did you have any bloods? You should go back and see someone else if not.

TakeMeToTheFresh · 01/04/2018 10:50

makingmiracles Glad you're okay Thanks

I work in a hospital (I'm on maternity leave), a busy London one. And patients are often seen within a few weeks for far less. The hospital I'm getting an appointment from isn't London!

I think I will ring and ask if there are any cancellations. I'm really worried.

OP, you need to call your GP as with results of no infection, you SHOULD have been referred under the 2 weeks pathway.

swingofthings · 01/04/2018 10:52

Sorry pressed too quickly. That doesn't mean that there is anything serious but that it should be considered, like you would be referred under 2 weeks for any form of breast lump although 1/10 only turn out to be anything to worry about.

endofthelinefinally · 01/04/2018 10:52

I have to wait till mid June for my urgent appointment. I won't be surprised if it gets cancelled nearer the time.
I have had 2 important follow up appointments cancelled in the last 6 months.
Meanwhile my condition has deteriorated and I have developed a fairly serious complication.
This is the state of the NHS now.
Between the current shambles and NICE, I have to get a lot more disabled before I can have choices around medication or physio.
Prevention is not in the budget.
It is only going to get worse.
I was advised by one doctor to try and find a clinical trial I would qualify for, as it might be a way of getting better meds.
I am sorry about your situation.

Lemons1571 · 01/04/2018 10:54

Phone your gp surgery and ask them if you can be referred to another hospital? Waiting lists vary.

I do agree the waiting times are appalling - I was referred last August (non urgent), got an appointment time in April (so an 8 month wait). In March the hospital wrote to cancel the appointment, no reason given and no new appointment. Then last week I got a new choose & book form, apparently this resets the clock and the waiting list is now 10 months long. So a total of 18 months!
The nhs no longer exists for non urgent referrals in our ares but I think your symptoms require (nicely) kicking some ass with the gp medical secretaries.

swingofthings · 01/04/2018 11:11

If your GP did refer you under the 2 weeks wait and the actual wait is 6 weeks, then I would contact your CCG to complain as this is totally unacceptable.

I expect the issue though is that your GP didn't refer you under the 2ww as they should have.

SofieMonde · 01/04/2018 11:12

Def should be 2 weeks. Had to do this on behalf of a relative recently and I phone bookings myself and insisted. Phone them directly and dont take no for an answer. The consultant will have the authority to push you up the list, try to speak to him or his secretary and say you are very worried

thenightsky · 01/04/2018 11:14

Do you know the name of the Consultant Urologist you have been referred to? If so, ring his secretary and ask her to contact you by phone if another patient cancels. As a med sec I often did that for patients. It helps if they live close to the hospital though as cancellations often come in with only an hour's notice at best. Also, remember, if the secretary does ring you, it may show as a number withheld if coming through hospital switchboard, so don't ignore it.

swingofthings · 01/04/2018 11:19

The consultant will have the authority to push you up the list, try to speak to him or his secretary and say you are very worried
Sorry but it doesn't really work like this. 2ww clinics are almost always different to other clinic slots. The consultant can review your referral and decide that it should fall under a 2ww clinic, but it would be quicker for your GP to chase and indeed refer you elsewhere is that is the length of wait for 2ww at your local clinic, or change the referral online or by calling the hospital.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 01/04/2018 11:22

@AnchorDownDeepBreath
You are most definitely incorrect. Blood in urine is a 2 week pathway referral.

OP most cases of blood in urine turn out to be nothing to worry about. But you need to have an ultrasound scan and/or cystoscopy urgently to confirm this. I think you should phone the hospital on Tuesday and insist on a nearer appt. Any half decent clinician would know if the referral say blood in wee then you need a scan urgently and would fit you in. I would!

Lovemusic33 · 01/04/2018 11:23

I always have blood in my wee, not always visible, I have had a number of tests, had to wait quite a while but I got the all clear a year ago, was told I was just one of thoughs people that always has blood in their pee. I have to have regular check ups. A couple weeks ago I started peeing almost pure blood, had all the signs of an infection, my gp didn’t seem concerned, gave me a strong course of antibiotics, my sample came back clear with no sign of infection, GP hasn’t referred me or followed up anything.

Just wanted you to know that it might not be anything serious. I had a cystoscopy, scans and kidney function test, all came back clear and I was told my bladder and kidneys are in perfect condition (this was a year ago).

TakeMeToTheFresh · 01/04/2018 11:25

Hi all, sorry I can't answer individually as trying to deal with a teething 4 month old Blush

I'm a Medical Secretary and I'm most certainly not allowed to bump anyone up by consultant approval, nor can I offer cancellations to patients.

I work in Orthopaedics, so perhaps my experience is different because it's rare to have anything life threatening within the referral possibilities.

The local hospital (of mine) is Luton and Dunstable. There aren't any others within easy/local reach, I don't believe.

It was an E Referal. I had to make the appointment myself online

OP posts:
endofthelinefinally · 01/04/2018 11:27

I wish GPs could just refer you to the best person straihht away.
Choose and book is a nightmare. You have no idea whether you are booking into the correct clinic.

AuntieMay · 01/04/2018 11:28

It's definitely a 2ww referral situation as I've
Just had the exact same scenario. I Was referred under 2ww for microscopic haematuria and had cystoscopy/bloods and ultrasound within 2 weeks. All was fine in the end but as with any urgent referrals it's a worrying time. I would double check with your GP as late April is not quick enough. Any bleeding from unknown source ( could be bladder or kidnwy) is treated as potentially serious and seen under the 2 week rules.

lovemylover · 01/04/2018 11:28

This happened to my niece, she was weeing blood, shes had all kinds of tests and nothing found, they thought something wrong with kidneys at first, but nothing found, shes had colonoscopy, nothing found.then thought ovarian cysts, again nothing found,
What age are you? i think now they are putting it down to possibly menopause
Hope nothing is found in your case too, but you still should have been referred within 2 weeks, get back onto your Dr

AndromedaPerseus · 01/04/2018 11:34

Sadly this is the state of the NHS and reflects the massive demand for diagnosis and treatment. Your best bet is to keep ringing up the department to see if there are any cancellations and ime they crop up regularly

TakeMeToTheFresh · 01/04/2018 11:37

So really then, the NHS need to stop saying about 2 WW referrals since they're often not even physically possible?

lovely I'm age 20 x

OP posts:
swingofthings · 01/04/2018 11:39

It was an E Referal. I had to make the appointment myself online
Then it definitely was NOT a 2ww referral as you can't do these via Choose and Book.

Phone your GP asap in the morning and ask him when he didn't your referral warranted to fall under the 2ww.
