To think this is too long a wait (NHS)

Two weeks ago I noticed blood in my urine, and it just got worse so now whenever I pee, it's the colour of red wine.

I saw my GP straight away, who referred me to a Urologist.

The appointment isn't until late April...

The referral was made mid March.

It's suppose to be urgent?

AIBU to be worried and think this is a long wait?

I have 0 other symptoms, no pain when peeing, no stinging. Just joint pain

Please don't contact the hospital as you know, the issue is not with them but with your GP. Hospital have a target of 93% 2ww referrals seen within two weeks. The other 7% is usually down to patient choice, being on holiday etc... rather than the hospital not having a slot. Even if that is the reason, the wait would then only be a week or so later, not 6 weeks.

Keilninnock · 01/04/2018 11:44

For not very much money you can pay for the appointment and treatment immediately. There is no NHS currently.

LexieLulu · 01/04/2018 11:45

Hey OP, I had this. I had scans and it turned out my kidneys had unexplainably swelled, and rather than filtering the blood, it was letting blood through. There was nothing else wrong, I didn't have treatment and it went away.

I know blood in urine can be bad, so please try your best to see a specialist earlier, but I'm just trying to give you some reassurance also x

FancyNewBeesly · 01/04/2018 11:48

Not the same situation at all but one of my 18 month olds has developed a squint and some concerning issues around it. Waited months to be seen but was glad to be finally getting it sorted out - saw someone for less than five minutes who confirmed it is a squint and that it may be affecting how his vision/brain is developing and and said they’d refer him to see the doctor. The appointment has come through for four months time, which is so frustrating as this first appointment was so thoroughly pointless.

In your situation I’d go back to the GP with the guidelines and ask for help - it’s really not okay for them to ignore referral guidelines.

Slartybartfast · 01/04/2018 11:52

op - can you ask your own GP to organise an ultrasound scan in the meantime?

CremeBrulee · 01/04/2018 11:54

From the mixed responses it is easy to see that your symptoms could well be nothing serious but unfortunately it is alarm quite possible that they indicate something that needs immediate treatment which is why you should definitely be on a two week cancer referral pathway.

Go back to the GP surgery and point out you will be waiting too long (outside cancer treatment protocol) and ask for the correct referral to be made. If they aren't helpful complain to your CCG. Don't wait passively. Good luck. Thanks

gamerwidow · 01/04/2018 11:56

As others have said it doesn't sound like yours is an urgent referral. 2ww referrals are usually seen within 2 weeks but routine referrals like yours would normally expect an appointment around 8 weeks after the referral. This is not even due to the current pressures but standard practice.

YearOfYouRemember · 01/04/2018 11:58

I'm also waiting and genuinely don't know why it's taking so long. 3-4 weeks since my hospital appointment and the GP still hasn't received the letter telling her what to prescribe me. If it doesn't come this week I'll end up taking an appointment just to ask her to chase up.

Slartybartfast · 01/04/2018 11:59

Dont forget the easter holidays/bank holidays could take away a week or two of appointments op.

penguinsandpanda · 01/04/2018 12:11

I don't think you've been given the 2ww.

I'm being referred for 4 different things at the moment and its incredibly slow and I've never known it this bad. Had to go to A&E on Tuesday night and one hospitals A&E was just shut with nothing else within 30 mins drive. There were a guy there needing an urgent heart operation and being found on the floor violently being sick every night by his wife kicked out of the A&E bed and being refused an urgent operation. I'm very lucky my work also pays for private but you really shouldn't have to rely on private. I've had cancer tests put through as not urgent with every symptom of the condition, 6 months before they tested. Another condition I have the hospital was horrified I've had for 6 months and no-one has done any cancer tests yet or any tests and A&E thought it might be cancer. My doctors say they can't cope with the sheer volume of people.

Read the NICE guidelines.

Haematuria in an otherwise well

Thehamsterspajamas · 01/04/2018 12:48

I was waiting forever for a urology appt and was advised to contact my GP to ask them to request the appt be expedited. Was told that it sometimes doesn’t help but that it often leads to a quicker date being given. Mine was brought forward after request from GP so worth a try. I have permanent (non visible) haematuria which is caused by a condition called cystitis cystica.

TakeMeToTheFresh · 01/04/2018 13:09

After reading NICE guidelines, it appears I'm not falling under the category for those actually needing a 2WW referral.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait it out.

I'm so sore, my legs feel like they're going to fall beneath me.

Breastfeeding is also taking away a lot of energy.

And every time I wee, I almost forget about it and then I see the blood again Envy

Have had blood in my urine for months, since November. Finally had a CT scan Thursday. Had an ultrasound in January. Have horrendous loin pain and history of UTIs, scarring and stones. I’ve been off work since just before Christmas. Had a blood test last week which showed good kidney function, but also that I have diabetes.

prettymess · 01/04/2018 13:16

And they only tested for diabetes because I had bought my own intone test strips and kept finding glucose!

prettymess · 01/04/2018 13:17

*urine not intone

Slartybartfast · 01/04/2018 13:18

have you had a blood test op?

peacheachpearplum · 01/04/2018 13:20

My husband has had this twice in the last year, after a few weeks it stops. GP says if it happens again he will refer him.

TakeMeToTheFresh · 01/04/2018 13:22

pretty Sorry to hear you have diabetes, what type is it?

Slarty I have, I phoned up to ask GP what the results were and along with telling me my urine results. Blood in urine but no infection, which was good, she said.

Bloods normal other than anaemia which she said I could treat by eating more iron enriched foods.

I don't think my kidney function was tested (from a quick glance of the tests I had done), but Lipids were (heart/cholesterol related)

OP posts:
prettymess · 01/04/2018 13:45

Type 2. I’ve been monitoring my blood sugar this week after the first ever mention of diabetes in my life on Monday when GP ordered blood test. Was called back in Wednesday to give me the bad news. I need a second test to confirm diagnosis, but it’s unlikely to be any different GP said. No meds for now. I feel loads better just by lowering my blood sugar. I could barely walk or stand up for longer than a minute. My job is standing up for 8hrs a day. I assumed I was “just aneamic” with all the blood in my wee and such.

prettymess · 01/04/2018 13:47

A long journey from when I first went to see a different GP who said it was my ribs last February! Hmm

lovemylover · 01/04/2018 13:47

That is obviously not menopausal then, i hope you are seen quickly
I know all about the cancellations i have so many sent from the hospital, so many consultants are leaving its frightening its difficult to get to see anyone

CremeBrulee · 01/04/2018 14:58

Please don't listen to GPs saying it's OK to have blood in your urine - it's not and they cannot tell magically if it's likely to be cancer or not.

Three years ago my DH had 1 instance of a small amount of blood in his urine, went straight to GP and was referred on 2 week cancer pathway. He had/has bladder cancer but we were lucky and caught it early before the rumours had grown through the bladder wall. Since then he has had ops to remove small growths 4 times and a course of chemo. He has to be checked every 3 months.

Don't leave it, get it checked.

Jeanvaljean27 · 01/04/2018 15:29

OP, the problem with asking for medical advice on mumsnet is that 99% of the responses you get are uninformed rubbish based on personal anecdote and gut feeling from some random sat at home.

Good to see you’ve decided to go and look up the NICE guidelines and elicited exactly why a) your GP didn’t do a 2ww referral and b) why the urologist triaging the referral didn’t change it to a 2ww one had the GP made an error.

As those guidelines clearly state, visible haematuria not caused by a UTI in the over 45s requires a 2ww referral to exclude bladder/renal tract cancer. As you’re 20 the chances of you having either are negligible which is why you don’t warrant such a referral.

Your GP has clearly asked for an ‘urgent’ referral instead and the triaging urologist has clearly decided it can wait until late April. I doubt harassing either the GP or the urologist’s secretary will make much difference unless you get lucky with a cancellation.
