To think that most air fresheners smell like toilets

Just that really. I've never used air fresheners, but given how much they're advertised on TV, and how much space they take up on shop shelves, most other people do. When I come across one "in the environment" it's usually in the context of masking toilet smells (nothing worse than walking into a stall just after someone has felt the need to have good spray, especially if you're probs to rhinitis like I am).

But I say "most" because I do have a very perfect friend whose house is always beautifully perfumed.

So what's the secret? If you want your home to smell gorgeously and subtly special rather than reminding people of a toilet, is it just a case of spending more or what?

Please tell me your home perfume secrets.

Good quality candles. Avoid anything that smells of pine - always reminds me of toilets. I've also got a couple of r3ed diffusers, same scent as my candles. Also, allow fresh air in as much as possible.

YANBU, I think the two smells have become so associated with each other now that air fresheners just smell of poo!

They smell fucking disguting. I never use them. Think in the future they'll be treated like cigarettes and vaping and banned. Very bad for your health, especially those plug-in stupid things. I would rather use essential oils.

SluttyButty · 31/03/2018 19:27

Agree it's probably good quality candles, think White Company or Jo Malone.

I have a Yankee candle scenterpiece (see what they did there) warmer.

They last forever and it fills the whole house.

Undercoverbanana · 31/03/2018 19:32

I agree. Perfume and aftershaves are also vile.

Air fresheners are vile.

A decent diffuser - I like white company - strong but lovely.

I cannot stand air fresheners, or difusers!! Awful. And so over powering

Candles are perfect!

I use candles, or I diffuse essential oils. I quite like peppermint.

I keep pots of lavender, Rosemary, and in summer, Geraniums in my bathroom as they're natural and fragrant all year round. A swoosh over the leaves gives extra scent when needed.

More pots of herbs and Geraniums in the kitchen are quite enough throughout the house.

Opening the windows, even in the cold weather also freshens the air.

Any form of chemical freshener is revolting and bad for the health.

PeaPodPopper · 02/04/2018 12:20

*a swoosh of the hand over the leaves.....

One word .. shitrus. Think I heard it on here once and I totally agreed, anything citrus-y makes me think of toilets 😩

Oldraver · 02/04/2018 12:39

Get burner, you can get electric ones if you wnat to avoid candles and burn soem essential oils. I'm using a few drops of lavender and geranium at the moment.

I think the problem with most air fresheners and most cleaning products is that they use artificil scents.
