I’ve broken my bum

AtSea1979 · 30/03/2018 23:43

I fell down the stairs and whacked my right bum cheek on the step. The pain was horrendous. I can’t sit down! But worse than that it’s left a big step shaped imprint/dent on my bum. There’s nothing there to break is there? I’m quite fat and I can move so don’t think it’s my pelvis. It’s just like the fat with a dent in it. It’s not getting any better a few hours later.

Yes there is, your coxic. I broke mine and had to sit on a rubber ring for weeks.

FlaminYon · 30/03/2018 23:47

is the pain only in your bum cheek? Not more central? Sometimes the coccyx can be fractured with a fall straight down landing on your bum.

Cirrys · 30/03/2018 23:49

This happened to my sister. The impact ripped the muscle in her buttock and pushed it upwards. Then it healed in the new position leaving a bulge with a dent underneath. It took ages to heal but doesn't bother her now apart from looking funny.

BankWadger · 30/03/2018 23:50

Could be your coccyx (agree very painful) or could be nerve or ligament damage. Ice the area and if it doesn't improve in a couple of days get to the dr. Not much other than careful sitting and time will heal a broken tail bone. Physio will help nerve pain (that's my life atm)

JessicaJonesJacket · 30/03/2018 23:50

You can break your cocyxx and the pain can refer to one side more than the other. I did this years ago. It took months to heal. probably not what you want to hear

Twotabbycats · 30/03/2018 23:51

You could have cracked the bottom of your pelvis.

Or torn some tendons, depending how you fell - I have tendon tears where my leg joins my bum that won't bloody heal and I couldn't sit after the accident, still can't sit for more than 20 mins!

Can you get checked at a minor injuries place? If not try icing the area, rest and take anti-inflammatories (nurofen, diclofenic, naproxen - not all at once 😂)

PrettyWisdomous · 30/03/2018 23:53

Cirrys this also happened to someone I know... Dent is still there some 40+ years later.

blaaake · 30/03/2018 23:55

Maybe you need a trip to a&e rather than asking for unqualified advice on mumsnet?

AtSea1979 · 31/03/2018 00:04

My coccyx doesn’t seem to be painful.
blaake don’t be so ridiculous. I’m hardly going to go to A&E with a sore dented bum cheek! Unless I have reason to believe my pelvis is fractured (unlikely since I can now walk and twist, lie relatively comfy on opposite side) then A&E is a waste of my time and there’s. Besides can you imagine me trying to sit in the waiting room for 4 hours.
Diclofenac sounds like a good idea. Thanks tabby I only took paracetamol but it didn’t touch it

I’ve a dent in my shin from where I tripped over a step years ago.

PickAChew · 31/03/2018 00:12

You could easily damage the actual hip joint with a fall like that. Get it checked.

blaaake · 31/03/2018 00:13

Don't call me ridiculous when you're moaning about your pain and I suggest a&e HmmConfused if you want to be a martyr then I'm not going to stop you, but if you could do it a little less publicly it would be much appreciated Smile

Charolais · 31/03/2018 00:16

I broke my bum once - cracked it in two.

LEMtheoriginal · 31/03/2018 00:17

If you are still struggling then a walk-in centre with x-ray? Maybe not over the holiday period but could go really early in morning to avoid rush? Call first to check if they feel an x-ray is necessary otherwise yes , waste of your time and theirs

Chocness · 31/03/2018 00:17

I did something similar years back when falling off a bed. My back has never been the same since and it’s caused problems all along my spine. I didn’t get it checked out but now wish I did. In hindsight I should have either got it x-rayed or at least gone to a physio/chiropractors for them to take a look and do some manipulation to get my hips back into situ. Now I have to live with it as my spine has over accommodated because of the injury and I’m somewhat out of kilter 😒

LEMtheoriginal · 31/03/2018 00:18

Oh no chariolas? Was you left with a permanent split?

Blake dud you mean to be quite so unkind?

Wheresthebeach · 31/03/2018 00:19

Perfectly reasonable topic for a thread. Why don't you just hide it and ignore if you object so much blaaake?

Ice is a good idea. Minor injuries if it's still as painful a day later to check for muscle damage.

Poor thing! I hope you feel better soon.

Lucked · 31/03/2018 00:28

If it is the fatty part there could be fat necrosis (basically dead, dying lump of fat), harmless but very lumpy and can take a long time to heal.

I know exactly what you mean. I slipped on the ice about 5 years ago and landed on one cheek.
It was agony, "dented" and black and blue.
No long term problems but the "dent" never went.
When I've told friends and family, they have never believed me, saying it's impossible or it must have been like that before.
Never heard of someone else breaking their bum Grin

JessicaJonesJacket · 31/03/2018 00:34

When I did it, the GP said they didn't x-ray or scan ...and there's not really any treatment except painkillers, anti-inflammatories and physio. I don't know if that advice has changed.

blaaake · 31/03/2018 00:43

Yes, I did LEM hun

Gide · 31/03/2018 00:50

Fell down wooden stairs holding a baby, was desperate to keep hold of the baby. I still (30 years later) have a dent where my arse cheek hit the edge of a stair so hard! I was hopping around afterwards, having put the baby down safely. Ridiculously painful. Hope you’re ok, OP.

Kittypillar · 31/03/2018 01:10

I've done exactly this and turned out I had a suspected fractured coccyx. I say suspected because when I did go to my GP about it, he said there was no point in me going to the hospital for an x-ray, as the treatment would be the same either way. Gave me some good painkillers and told me to buy a rubber ring to sit on at work, which I did.

Poor you, I remember being in absolute agony when I did it. Honestly felt worse than when I broke numerous other bones. Definitely go to your GP or the minor injuries unit if you're really struggling, they can at least help you with pain medication. Hope you feel better soon!
