I’ve broken my bum

AtSea1979 · 30/03/2018 23:43

I fell down the stairs and whacked my right bum cheek on the step. The pain was horrendous. I can’t sit down! But worse than that it’s left a big step shaped imprint/dent on my bum. There’s nothing there to break is there? I’m quite fat and I can move so don’t think it’s my pelvis. It’s just like the fat with a dent in it. It’s not getting any better a few hours later.

A&E is accident and emergency. If it's not life threatening you shouldn't be going to a&e. @blaaake

blaaake · 31/03/2018 02:27

What utter dangerous tosh that is @guest477337 do everyone a favour and never say that again

opionated · 31/03/2018 06:44

you contradict yourself you said your self its for accidents and the op obviously had an accident and potentially broke a bone. ps to many people get something believe its not serious do nothing and die

CobaltRose · 31/03/2018 07:08

You should definitely go to A&E for a suspected fracture! @guest477337

Not saying you've broken anything though, OP. I've broken my coccyx and I could barely walk due to the pain!

eternalopt · 31/03/2018 07:14

Call nhs direct. They'll tell you whether it's a&e worthy - is it life threatening isn't the test!

SunnyCoco · 31/03/2018 07:20

I’ve done similar before, likely they won’t scan you as the treatment is the same either way - ie painkillers and rest
Get well soon

InspMorse · 31/03/2018 07:32

The NHS website tell you what A&E is for.

An A&E department (also known as emergency department or casualty) deals with genuine life-threatening emergencies, such as:
loss of consciousness
acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
persistent, severe chest pain
breathing difficulties
severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
severe allergic reactions
severe burns or scalds

For everything else you go to or call:

Minor injuries units, urgent care centres, NHS walk in centres, GP or call NHS 111

and they'll tell you to go to A&E

Eminybob · 31/03/2018 07:38

Ummm it doesn’t have to be life threatening before you go to a&e Confused You are not going to die from a broken leg for eg, but you definitely need to go to a&e to get it fixed.

InspMorse · 31/03/2018 07:44

This is my point (see above re.A&E)

People are confused because not all areas have Minor injuries units.
If your area does have one, they DO treat broken bones.
If your area doesn't have a MIU, you go to A&E.

I’ve broken my bum
Eminybob · 31/03/2018 07:48

There mustn’t be one in my area. My mum badly broke her ankle last year and we had to get an ambulance which took her to a&e.

When my son jammed a pea up his nose a couple of years ago and we couldn’t get it out, 111 advised to take him to a&e.

Eminybob · 31/03/2018 07:49

OTOH I fell and hurt my ankle at work in another town (and county), an ambulance was called and it took me to a minor injuries unit (it wasn’t broken in the end)

BeyondThePage · 31/03/2018 07:50

I did exactly the same thing OP - ended up with one buttock dark black/blue/yellow/purple for about 6 weeks and oddly shaped for over a year.

BUT - I have also - 3 years on - ended up with a sore hip that side and wish I had at least seen the doctor about it, as something may have been able to be done back then.

InspMorse · 31/03/2018 07:56

Eminybob
This is the problem. The NHS site is misleading as it states clearly that A&E is for life threatening emergencies yet when you use the MIU, urgent care units or 111 they send you to A&E.

We went to a MIU when DS gashed his leg. It wasn't an emergency but it was a bit deep & needed a stitch or two. They sent us to A&E as they didn't do stitches but he needed some.
it was embarrassing turning up at A&E with a cut.

eternalopt · 31/03/2018 08:03

Depends where you are I guess. Where I am, there are no walk in centres, no MIU - just gp or a&e. The times me/my family have been to a&e it's been for suspected fractures which need x-raying or bad cuts that won't stop bleeding and need gluing. None of these were life threatening, but urgent treatment. Most of the time been told to go there by the gp or by nhs direct.

AtSea1979 · 31/03/2018 10:01

Thank you for all the advice.
Sounds like I’m going to permanently have a misshaped bum from some of you’s with it long term.
It’s a nice purple colour this morning. Don’t think I’ve hurt my hip or anything as I can move freely just not sit down on that side. It’s sore but not unbearly so like when I first did it.

OP posts:
BeyondThePage · 31/03/2018 10:08

My hip was fine for about 3 years, but I think the fact that you walk differently, favour one buttock when sitting etc etc means that it was affected by the fall albeit indirectly.

gttia · 31/03/2018 10:12

I did exactly the same thing nine years ago and still have the dent! It was sore for a while and very bruised

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 31/03/2018 10:14

I had a tumble down the stairs about 3 years ago which left me with the most amazing bruise from my bum cheek to my knee-I still have a dent in my arse to this day...

Woobeedoo · 31/03/2018 10:56

Would firm massage help to even out the bump? Keep with me on this! Many years ago I fell and broke my jaw, cutting the skin to the bone - after the area under my chin was stitched back together, the whole area started healing oddly, I was getting a weird Desperate Dan/cleft and wonky chin going on. Each day I massaged the area for about 20 minutes. It was absolute agony at first that brought me to tears but it evened out the shape and now apart from a small scar, you'd never know.

AtSea1979 · 31/03/2018 21:49

Massage might be an idea but I couldn’t bear to touch it at the moment, maybe in a few days I should try.
On the plus side it’s kinda given me a bum lift, that cheek is def higher now!

Fintress · 31/03/2018 21:55

Ouch! I've still got a dent in my thigh after getting boozy and over excited at a Bowie concert. My heel caught in my jeans and I landed on the corner of a metal step. Didn't realise how painful it was until the next day when my hangover wore off Grin

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 31/03/2018 21:57

A bum lift you say?

Maybe even up the other side by landing on it as well? Wink

But seriously ouch! Hope you feel better soon.Flowers

ginghamstarfish · 31/03/2018 23:14

I also have a dent and lump in my bum - fell down some metal steps bouncing down on my bum - must be 30 years ago!

AtSea1979 · 08/04/2018 22:19

I think i’m going to have to see my GP tomorrow. It’s suddenly got very painful again, feels hot and more swollen. Maybe it’s just mending? Like when a scab gets itchy?

EscapingAdultLife · 08/04/2018 22:28

Hope you're ok and not in too much pain. A trip to GP definately the right think to do. You never know what damaged you could have done to the discs in your back as well.
