Chop off the toes

Every single day there is wailing about sock lumps..sock bumps.
I'm being driven to distraction.
Ds 5 will not put his shoes on for school without full meltdown.
I get angry. He's upset.
I have no clue what to do except cut the toes out.
Seamless socks are unable to be used because of the strict uniform requirements, I've been looking for seamless socks in the same style but can't find any.
Is there any diy options for a home made alteration before I lose my mind completely?

Aibu to just cut off the toe

I feel his pain. I have some sensory issues and I wore socks with a slightly bumpy pattern the other day and they drove me insane all day. Thinner socks might help? I find the seams are much smaller.

KirstenRaymonde · 29/03/2018 12:11

If you cut off the toe it’ll roll up as he walks and the rolled bit will be as uncomfortable as the seams

stolemyusername · 29/03/2018 12:11

Wear the socks inside out

HollyBayTree · 29/03/2018 12:12

His toes or the sock toes?

LemonScentedStickyBat · 29/03/2018 12:14

Inside out works for my ds

TheNoseyProject · 29/03/2018 12:14

Turn them inside out. I had this very strongly as a child and often found that if you turn socks inside out and slightly misalign them so the edges of the seams are not lined up exactly with the sides of the feet I could cope.

My mum still goes on about my sock issues

acornsandnuts · 29/03/2018 12:16

Can you get thin seamless socks to wear under the lumpy socks

SockDrama · 29/03/2018 12:22

The rules are "these socks only"
I will try inside out.
I will then try normal socks under them.
I will then cut the toes off.
They need to be white with 2 black or dark blue stripes at the top. Ankle length.
Can't find any that are thinner. These are chunky sports socks so of course feel odd in a shoe.
I had this as a child and cut the seams out myself much to my mother's absolute horror.
It's hereditary.

Maybe a mad idea but have you a friend who can sew?

Maybe get some seamless toe ones and Frankenstein them at the ankle to the school ones?

Under the shoe you won't be able to tell?

Fruitcorner123 · 29/03/2018 12:25

No solution but I feel your pain. Does he put his own socks on? My daughter same age now wont let anyone else put her tights on or adjust them because she is the only one who can do it right. It used to be a nightmare until she learnt how to do it

Fabpinky · 29/03/2018 12:28

Let him wear them inside out. I used to have this issue, I grew out of it

Dustysparrow · 29/03/2018 12:31

I have similar issue with my DD - literally everything is 'uncomfortable' and socks are no exception. We have also had endless issues with her socks shrinking in the wash which just makes it worse. BUT I have finally found somewhere which does socks that she finds comfortable and which don't shrink in the wash - Universal Textiles - and the socks stay lovely and soft like new after many washes - these are girls knee high socks but they are bound to do boys socks in the same material: www.universal-textiles.com/UK-UT/utk117.php

Finally after years of moaning she is happy with her socks!!! Maybe you can find something there for your DS too. Good luck!

CaffeineAndCrochet · 29/03/2018 12:31

Chunky sports socks would irritate my feet and I don't have much in the way of sensory issues. Either try them inside out or try a smoother pair inside them.

doze931 · 29/03/2018 12:31

If its sensory issues i would approach the school to see what accomodations can be made. My son wears polo shirt every day as refuses to wear shirt and tie. He has SEN

mirime · 29/03/2018 12:31

I'm still funny about seams in socks so I never grew out of it!

BadAsMe · 29/03/2018 12:35

I'd try chopping off the whole foot and sewing the remaining ankle-warmers to a pair of seamless socks.

Nomad86 · 29/03/2018 12:35

Seamless socks the same colour then school socks with the toes cut off over the top. Nobody will know the difference even if he's getting changed.

SockDrama · 29/03/2018 12:39

I was going to frankenstein a pair but would they fray?
Have found some on the Hugo boss website that match the exact criteria but I am not paying £30 for socks.
He puts them on himself and stretches and stretches them until the heel is halway up his leg. So not only do we have a meltdown, we also have a terrible looking sock in shoe combination by the time said socks have been stretched into acceptable shape.

YourWanMajella · 29/03/2018 12:39

Use seamless socks and tell the school to bite you? That's what I would have done had my kids school not allowed him his seamless socks (and special under clothes layer!)

AdelicaArundel · 29/03/2018 12:40

As Nomad86 above...if it is causing the child that much distress I would break the uniform rule and let the school talk to me directly about it. I'm sorry, it is absolutely ridiculous to be that rigid about uniform for a 5 year old.

Try giving his feet a firm massage before and after putting socks on if there is no sock work-around.

FrozenSweetPea · 29/03/2018 12:40

Bigger shoes? Would that help if the socks are really chunky?

SockDrama · 29/03/2018 12:47

The shoes are already a big fit. I'm going to speak to them if the turning inside out doesn't work. But he will be the only one with odd socks which I'm trying to avoid.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 29/03/2018 12:50

I get twitchy about sock seams. Tights are even worse.

Apparently it means you're intelligent!

I would speak to the school. It's an issue that can be resolved fairly simply. It's laughable that socks are causing so much drama when there is an easy solution.
