Chop off the toes

Every single day there is wailing about sock lumps..sock bumps.
I'm being driven to distraction.
Ds 5 will not put his shoes on for school without full meltdown.
I get angry. He's upset.
I have no clue what to do except cut the toes out.
Seamless socks are unable to be used because of the strict uniform requirements, I've been looking for seamless socks in the same style but can't find any.
Is there any diy options for a home made alteration before I lose my mind completely?

What about cutting them off at the ankle and using the school stripey bit as a kind of ankle warmer, over a smooth sock?

SockDrama · 29/03/2018 12:55

An ankle warmer. Good plan.
I can glue it on with fabric paste

can he wear a "trainer" invisible type sock under his school socks - you can get ones without seams?

GnotherGnu · 29/03/2018 12:56

See if you can get an official diagnosis of sensory problems, and then point out to the school the duty to make reasonable adjustments by letting him wear acceptable socks.

And get on the PTA to see if you can get the uniform policy on these socks changed anyway. They sound a pretty ridiculous thing to have as part of a compulsory uniform.

CheesyWeez · 29/03/2018 13:02

Embroider (or permanent marker) a black line round some smooth socks?

Lacucuracha · 29/03/2018 13:08

The rules are "these socks only"

Why not try speaking to the school first, if you haven't already? They may make exceptions? If you don't ask, you don't get.

UnimaginativeUsername · 29/03/2018 13:08

Maybe get some seamless toe ones and Frankenstein them at the ankle to the school ones?

I adore this use of Frankenstein as a verb. Even more so because I’m sure some pedant somewhere would be irate because of it.

I’m not sure I have any useful sick advice though. I really don’t think school uniforms should be allowed to stipulate sock requirements. It’s just pointless pettiness.

Lacucuracha · 29/03/2018 13:09

I see you will, sorry!

Verbena37 · 29/03/2018 13:10

Tell the sendco you’re ds has sensory issues with some clothing and that you will sending him in seamless socks for school.

Trilllllian · 29/03/2018 13:15

I’d just cut off the stripes bit and sew it on (as mentioned) but I’d really mention it to school. Sensory isssues are a real thing - it’s not just being picky for many children.

Hissy · 29/03/2018 13:16

OP if your 5yo has sensory issues, then a different pair of socks HAS to be reasonable adjustment, surely?

All this cutting of this and that is just completely crazy and what happens when if he loses his socks after PE or whatever? you'll have to do a whole load and i'm sure they will fray

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 29/03/2018 13:22

They will ride up if you just cut off the toes but could he cope if you turned them into "flip flop" style socks something like this?

UnimaginativeUsername · 29/03/2018 13:26

I know MN is super pro-rules for rules sake (and particularly uniform rules) but surely people recognise that it is absurd that parents should have to resort to disability legislation so their children can wear comfortable socks to school.

Why do schools care what kind of socks anyone is wearing?

doze931 · 29/03/2018 13:30

Wouldnt anyone actually notice they arent correct. No other kid has questioned why my 5 yr old wears the polo instead of shirt and tie? He also goes to mainstream 1 day and all the kids just accept that he goes to 2 schools

QueenArseClangers · 29/03/2018 13:34

My mornings are punctuated with wails about sock seams and ‘knickers in bum’.
Both tortures that end up with children flapping and crying on the floor.

TeenTimesTwo · 29/03/2018 13:35

Move to a school with more flexibility?

pigsDOfly · 29/03/2018 13:37

Bless him, I fully sympathise. I have quite a number of socks I can't wear because of the front seam. I have no sensory issues, lumpy socks are just uncomfortable.

Some good ideas on here though. Hope you can sort it out for him.

UnimaginativeUsername · 29/03/2018 13:39

Done schools will go out of their way to notice what you’d otherwise never notice.

DS1 went to a school where he was subjected to regular sock inspections in PE. They wore jogging bottoms but the teacher would make them line up and pull their trousers up to check they were wearing the uniform PE socks and not some other socks.

I had a teacher at school who use to insist that we pulled our jumpers up to demonstrate that our shirts were tucked in. She was unbelievably petty.

Marylou2 · 29/03/2018 13:39

Lots of people at my yoga classes wear toeless socks. They come in all colours but I have some black and grey ones. You wouldn’t be able to tell under school trousers. Might they be an option? This type of thing.

I feel your pain, I've been dealing with this for the best part of 15 years. I have a 16yr old with Aspergers who hates socks and shoes !
However back in 2010 we were in the US for a wedding, we had a huge sock meltdown with an hour to go and out of shear desperation I drove to Target son in tow and bought the nearest pack of socks off the shelf, that felt and smelt right. They turned out to be his favourite socks ever !

They are Hanes crew socks, he wont wear anything else. Luckily we have friends that frequently fly to the US and will pop into target to buy a multipack for me a couple of times a year. The seam is hardly there and not against the toes ! We all wear these socks now, because I'm also a bit funny about socks sometimes.

I think you can buy them through amazon.co.uk. just search for Hanes boys socks. They may not be right for school but as a free time socks perhaps ?

Good luck..

UnimaginativeUsername · 29/03/2018 14:02

I’m in a coffee shop at the moment. Outside the window is a large group of school kids in uniform who appear to be trying to get people to answer a survey or something. I definitely cannot see anyone’s socks (or whether they shirt is tucked in for that matter).

SockDrama · 29/03/2018 14:05

Unfortunately the uniform is shorts and the special socks so they'd be spotted instantly otherwise I'd not care.
My husband is now googling socks.
I'm loving these ideas. I may resort to sharpie and white sock.

We have a sock drama lama in our house.

Strangely we have found a fairly inexpensive solution at last.

Slazenger thin sports ankle socks worn inside out.

It seems to work. We used to have 20 minute meltdowns every morning, now it's quiet. Sensory issues are soothed Grin.

My dd went through a phase about this - lasted about 6 months! I just gritted teeth through it and once they were actually on and she was wearing them for a few minutes it was fine
