Half eaten cake and open packet of biscuits, leftover after visitors, Aibu to throw it all away just to stop us eating it? Hate having so much unhealthy stuff in the house

OP posts:
80sMum · 29/03/2018 20:51

"Yes YABU to bin good edible food"

Well I would agree IF the OP were suggesting throwing away some good, edible food. But she's not! She's talking about sugary, sickly junk food, which is no good for anybody!!

I say, bin it OP!

HerSymphonyAndSong · 29/03/2018 20:58

Why would you serve “sugary, sickly junk food” to visitors though? If it’s not decent cake, why buy it?

80sMum · 29/03/2018 21:09

HerSymphonyAndSong There's probably no such thing thing as "decent cake" in terms of nutritional value, though!

Applesandpears23 · 29/03/2018 21:15

This is what teenage boys are for! Do you know any?

Plumsofwrath · 29/03/2018 21:29

Of course it’s not the same throwing away food as eating it, after the point of purchase! If you’ve bought this food, eat it and don’t buy/eat other food! Once slice of cake or a couple of biscuits a day until it’s gone = equivalent calories less lunch and dinner on those days Confused.

I too can’t believe how blasé people are being about throwing edible food away. Food, even crap food, comes from somewhere in terms of natural resources.

In future, pack some cake up for your visitors to take home with them, or give it to a friendly neighbor or take it into work. Invite a good friend or close family over for a chat and a cuppa “to help me finish this bloody cake, I can’t eat it myself”.

Think. It’s food. It’s not a scarce commodity for most of the western world, but in human terms it absolutely is.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 29/03/2018 21:37

I’m a long term low carber and even I don’t see all kinds of cake as “junk food”!

Chrys2017 · 29/03/2018 21:38

As PP said, please don't feed cake or biscuits to birds.

Loyaultemelie · 29/03/2018 22:08

I have been making a real effort to cut the sugary stuff out for DDs. This unfortunately results in me cutting down too or hiding chocolate in the wardrobe to eat in the bath or it does indeed jump on my plate.

Bluetoo1 · 30/03/2018 07:58

If it’s not decent cake, why buy it

Not many bought cakes are good imv. And the wedge of icing just tastes if sugar, again imv. Butter icing used to be creamy flavoured and sweet.
I like French patisserie type stuff or a good plain sugared doughnut but most is just sweet and nothing else.
Home made is fine by me though.

PasstheStarmix · 30/03/2018 07:59

Don’t throw away cake, at least take it into work or something... the way I look at it is eat the cake because won’t be having cake again for awhile (that’s my excuse)

Bodear · 30/03/2018 08:06

Hi OP, I understand what a lot of posters are saying about the virtues of food sharing etc BUT practically, if I had opened cake in the house I would eat it and as I’m trying to lose weight I would bin it. In fact I did that last weekend and didn’t feel guilty.

RiceBaby · 30/03/2018 08:14

I'd bin it

fruityb · 30/03/2018 08:18

The amount of times I’ve seen “sugary processed junk food” on here.... it’s lost all meaning!

Freeze it or chuck it. I never realised it was that big a deal!

LaurieMarlow · 30/03/2018 08:37

Think. It’s food. It’s not a scarce commodity for most of the western world, but in human terms it absolutely is.

Whether the OP eats it or not makes absolutely no difference to that.

If she eats it, giving her body unnecessary, unwanted calories, which will probably be stored as fat, that's no less 'waste' than putting it in the bin. And it's worse for her health.

The key is to buy less in the first place.

BikeRunSki · 30/03/2018 08:49

Freezer!

Bumdishcloths · 30/03/2018 08:57

Adore the sanctimonious fuckers deriding edible food as 'sugary processed junk'

Yes it's sugary. Doesn't mean someone in need wouldn't appreciate it ffs. It's not rendered valueless by its sugar content Hmm

Bumdishcloths · 30/03/2018 08:59

And really cross that everyone is so gleefully advocating it be binned, wasting food is not ok!!

OohMavis · 30/03/2018 09:03

I'm a cake maker. My neighbours receive lots of surplus cake. They've told me if I ever move out they're coming with me Grin

Your neighbours will be grateful I'm sure. Who doesn't like free cake.

Utterly wasteful to throw it away.

80sMum · 30/03/2018 09:22

Bumdishcloths "It's not rendered valueless by its sugar content"

I think it IS valueless for most people! The only circumstance in which it has "value" nutritionally is if the recipient is seriously underweight and needs calories regardless of where they come from.

In most people's case, the last thing they need is extra (unnecessary) calories from food that provides virtually no nutritional benefits, causes a sugar/insulin rush in the body and is then stored in the body as fat.

BitOutOfPractice · 30/03/2018 09:23

I know that sugar is the new demon. I know processes foods aren't great for us. But jeez sone of the sanctimonious bosom hoiking in here is unbelievable

It's ok to eat sugar in moderation, occasionally. It's ok to sometimes eat stuff because it's nice. Not for its nutritional value. So long as it's not all day every day. I had a cookie last night. I ate it because I fancied it. I've not eaten anything processed all week. As far as I know, the world didn't stop turning.

Bumdishcloths · 30/03/2018 09:28

@80sMum I bet you're fun at parties.

Ietthemeatcake · 30/03/2018 09:53

I would put the biscuits away for visitors (they keep ages) and bin the cake. If you're just eating the cake to avoid putting it in the bin, you're treating yourself as a bin IYSWIM.

My husband will eat leftovers from mine and our DD's plates regretted than their it in the bin and tries to make me eat more than I want to sometimes rather than throw it away, because he's cooked to much.

It's taken me a lot of years to get over the mentality that you must always eat everything in your plate as it was drilled into me throughout childhood, but not my response is that I am not a bin to throw excess food in!

SaucyJack · 30/03/2018 09:56

"Who doesn't like free cake."

Lots of people Hmm. Presumably if Sarah from the admin department wanted to eat half a stale cake for lunch, then she'd bring one in herself to have instead of the pasta salad she did bring.

Unless you know someone really really well, treating them like a by proxy food wastage scheme isn't that nice. 99% of the people I know are trying to limit the crap they eat. Offloading your guilt for them to deal with isn't great.

Makingdinner · 30/03/2018 10:01

Life's too short to throw away cake!

This thread is joyless!

Makingdinner · 30/03/2018 10:04

And if you're that bothered about eating sugary crap maybe you should be baking your own sugar free cakes.
