Half eaten cake and open packet of biscuits, leftover after visitors, Aibu to throw it all away just to stop us eating it? Hate having so much unhealthy stuff in the house

I agree that food waste is bad, taking it to your friend's or work is the best idea. There are indeed supposed to be food sharing places that you can share opened food items on. Am I the only one that would be too suspicious to eat opened items of food when you don't know where they've come from, or am I being too picky?!

honeylulu · 29/03/2018 08:01

Can you take it into work/ give it to school or nursery for staffroom or local church for after services/toddler groups etc. Our church are always saying donations of cake and biscuits welcome.

BeyondThePage · 29/03/2018 08:06

Cake, I would throw. Biscuits will keep for ages in a tin - all that is needed is some self-control.

Vitalogy · 29/03/2018 08:15

firstevernamechange · 29/03/2018 08:20

Please, please, please don't feed your old cakes/bread/biscuits etc yo the bords. It makes them sick and attracts rats.

You could try Olio, a food sharing website/ app.

Bluetoo1 · 29/03/2018 08:21

(good edible food

Sugary processed junk food is not good.

LaurieMarlow · 29/03/2018 08:23

Taking it into work is always my go to. Always gets eaten there.

However on the point about waste, I don't see it as more virtuous to eat something your body neither wants nor needs, that will get turned into fat. Eating empty calories is just a different kind of waste.

Are you really suggesting food sharing half a cake and half a packet of biscuits?

TheClaws · 29/03/2018 08:28

FGS. Just eat it. Just not all at once Smile Seriously ... space it out and it won’t harm you, I promise.

PrimeraVez · 29/03/2018 08:31

The thing is, wasting food is horrible, BUT realistically, who is going to want a half-eaten cake? We had an absolute shit ton of cake left after my wedding and I really struggled to give it away (tried local nursing home, homeless shelter etc)

Last time my mum came to stay she made a snarky comment about how much food we throw away, but then her and my step-dad are both really overweight, because they are constantly nibbling on leftovers and random bits of crap in their fridge.

I would either take it into work or dump it in the bin and not think about it again.

HarrietSmith · 29/03/2018 08:32

I think if you are that angsty about a few biscuits and half a cake, next time when you have visitors you could

a) buy something a bit more wholesome like hot cross buns - or one or two bags of cookies from the bakery section. That way there will be fewer left overs

b) make some home-made flapjack. The ingredients will be better, and any left-overs are useful for packed lunches.

Laiste · 29/03/2018 08:42

I would chuck it. I don't throw away a lot of food and i don't live anywhere a town or city where there would be somewhere to share open food.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 29/03/2018 08:57

I would slice the cake and freeze in portions. It will last many months, perhaps until more visitors arrive!

Vitalogy · 29/03/2018 09:22

Are you really suggesting food sharing half a cake and half a packet of biscuits? Why not. I hadn't heard of that website but just had a quick look, sounds like it's a way of connecting with you neighbours and helping each other out too.

SaucyJack · 29/03/2018 09:30

Just chuck the leftovers. It's not a waste in my eyes- you've had the pleasure of sharing what you wanted with guests.

Palming off stale cake onto a neighbour/colleague who hasn't got the willpower isn't doing them a favour.

AnaViaSalamanca · 29/03/2018 09:35

Pack the biscuits and give them to the homeless people you see on the streets.

TotHappy · 29/03/2018 09:38

What LaurieMarlow said.

It took me a loooooong time of over eating before it suddenly clicked that if I neither wanted/needed the food, it was just as much wasted in me as in the bin. Like a light suddenly went on. And i wasn't over weight, but used to finish things even if I was full, this making myself feel sick, just to avoid chucking them. Madness. Where does this a version to waste come from?!

viques · 29/03/2018 10:04

I always throw away the chocolates with centres I don't like (polishes virtual halo) but only because I know that eventually I would force myself to eat them....... But I don't think I would have the same steely determination and willpower with cake. Whatever flavour it was.

SundayGirls · 29/03/2018 16:00

Tot me too. Someone upthread said "why waste good food?" but that kind of processed sugary stuff doesn't really benefit anyone, health wise.

cloudtree · 29/03/2018 16:03

But on the basis that most people will want a slice of cake or biscuit every now and again why would you not portion it and put it in the freezer. Then when you do want a piece of cake you don't go out any buy another and then throw half of that away, etc etc

HerSymphonyAndSong · 29/03/2018 20:36

“that kind of processed sugary stuff doesn't really benefit anyone, health wise”

Why would you serve it to guests then? If I provide cakes and biscuits then they are decent quality whether bought or homemade

HerSymphonyAndSong · 29/03/2018 20:37

(I’m not saying sugar is good for you btw, just why would you serve really heavily processed or not decent sugary things to people who come to your house?)

SleepFreeZone · 29/03/2018 20:42

Cake freezes really well.

SweetMoon · 29/03/2018 20:43

I couldn't throw perfectly good cake and biscuits away. But obviously upto you if your fine with that. Unless you have visitors bringing this stuff over every week it's not going to do you any harm having it once in a while.

trickyex · 29/03/2018 20:44

Slice the cake and freeze it.
USe the biscuits crunched up with chocolate and dried fruit for fridge cake (can also be frozen ).
