Just that really. I thought it was widely known that what you put out there is no longer yours.

Yanbu. Facebook is shit and people quite ignorant for how they use it.

Tobuyornot99 · 28/03/2018 14:35

I'm with you OP. It's a free site, it's quite obvious they make money somehow. Also baffles me that people moan like hell about MN, it's a free site, if you don't like it don't use it!

ToriRay · 28/03/2018 14:40

I remember my Dad warning me and my sister off FB about 10 years ago. Something along the lines of 'it will be the downfall of society..!' I mean... he also puts a plaster over the webcam incase google are spying, and shuts the windows when the wifi is on so the wifi doesn't get out of the windows! We may think he's a bit wacky, but maybe he has more of a point than we ever have him credit for! I do love him!! Smile

RefuseTheLies · 28/03/2018 14:43

I think I might be alone in just not really caring if Facebook shared information about me.

Doryismyname · 28/03/2018 14:43

Your Dad sounds great @ToriRay Grin

More people will be doing this I reckon. Technology is going to control us soon!

brownelephant · 28/03/2018 14:45

yanbu
I also put a sticker on laptop camera

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/03/2018 14:46

People are beyond naive about how little control they have over what they share online. Social media is gear to stay and I think it should be a large part if the PSHE curriculum if it isn’t already

ToriRay · 28/03/2018 14:47

@Doryismyname @ScattyCharly he is brilliant. It's the ferocity in which he believes it! We are no longer going to mock him for his technological beliefs though! I reckon 'I told you so' may be uttered a few times as more FB news unfolds! Grin

latebreakfast · 28/03/2018 14:51

YANBU. And I think we'll be the last generation to care about it.

Doryismyname · 28/03/2018 14:53

I have FB but have always been cautious about it. My profile details are fake and it’s private as much as possible. I only use it for clubs and have a few close family and friends on there. I never post stuff and never post anything about DCs. I will also admit that I recently turned off Siri and I am deeply suspicious of Alexa. Off to make a tin foil hat.

Robin233 · 28/03/2018 15:53

Think there should be more 'real live' fb stories about.
People ( I including me ) just don't realise ........

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 28/03/2018 15:57

Are they? Are they not just shocked about the CA scandal; which is very different?

GladAllOver · 28/03/2018 16:08

Many people seem to think that because they have set all the privacy settings their private information is safe.
But that only stops other users finding it. Facebook itself sees and uses everything that is posted.

GladAllOver · 28/03/2018 16:14

The CA scandal shows what can be done with the data. As long as Facebook collects and keeps that data it can always happen again.
Facebook users can only 'trust' it not to let it happen - there is no physical action users can take to prevent it.

Yarboosucks · 28/03/2018 16:22

The only people that i know who are shocked are the ones who are stupid enough to fall for click bait and who what to know which historical figure they look like. Of course, they are precisely the type of person who is susceptible to viral marketing and media manipulation.

HollyBayTree · 28/03/2018 16:24

Anyone who habitually fills in ridiculous quizes like 'what sort of kitchen implement are you' and ticks the allow access box, frankly needs their head testing.

I do this as well. It's not OTT. I did it from when I read that Mark Zuckerburg never ever uses any computer without covering the webcam first. I think he's more privy as to the reasons why and who can gain access to it than the average person.

ohfortuna · 28/03/2018 16:37

social networks are a function of modern computer technology, they are an integral part of our lives, we ought to be able to use them to our benefit without being milked for data which the owners then turn into vast profits.

The owners of the tech giants have a monopoly on a public resource they are already too powerful and need to be regulated.

ToriRay · 28/03/2018 16:38

@MissionItsPossible scary isn't it? Definitely not suggesting it's OTT, just that my Dad appeared to be head of the game Smile
And the irony that Mark Zuckerberg is worried about anyone invading his privacy is brilliant!

womanhuman · 28/03/2018 16:45

I think most people who cared were probably clued up enough to be mindful of what they posted, and to whom they posted it.

I think that’s not the same as being aware they track everything you’ve ever liked, all the pages you follow, where you physically are, which stories you read and for how long or which you scroll on by.

But as for answering those quizzes, or making word clouds out your posts, or using non-fb apps for ‘on this day’ type reasons, or posting photos so you can see what you’d look like as a man or in 20 years time, well, you’re handing it all over to you don’t even know who.

kalapattar · 28/03/2018 16:52

I advertise on Facebook. They haven't shared people's personal details with me - but I can target ads very very specifically at age groups, gender, location, age of children, income and even who they liked etc.

They can tell me who many people are in a segment - and they can really segment.

My advert might be of more interest to a specific segment - and I can test responses of different adverts and different segments.

I can also target a different message for a different segment.

None of that involves me having people's personal details. It's just Facebook can put my advert on a particular page.

Is that such a bad thing? Or does it have ramifications?

Same for MN - they haven't sold your personal data - but they can sure as hell use your information to put an ad on a page aimed just at you if you login.

TalkinPeece · 28/03/2018 16:56

I'm not impressed that they scrape all the phone numbers off my phone

I'm not impressed that they track messages on my phone even when I log out of FB

I'm not impressed that they put cookies on my machine to overrride the "delete cookies" setting

I'm not impressed that they do not enforce basic contract law on people who DO pay them
