Just that really. I thought it was widely known that what you put out there is no longer yours.

There is a fitness app where you can upload your data to the cloud.

There is also apps that allow you to get cheaper car insurance ....

Facebook wanting your phone data is just another data point in the grand scheme of things.

They already have algorithms of your friendship group via tagging, checking in, both liking certain ads and amount of time messaging each other. The majority of people happily gave up their phone number as they wanted the service provided and didn't really believe they was the product.

It's a refined data point as there will be a couple within your group that you regularly ring/message that have also given their phone number up.

This is where regulation does need to come into place, but some personal awareness needs to be applied.

I'm with ToriRay's dad, there's a sticker over my laptop's camera too!

If your going that full on, you need to make sure the microphone is sorted as voice is far more easily hacked, read and stored (most people ignore this), you do not use any phone with a front facing camera, make sure you do not have a smart tv and many, many more.

@JustAnother Your approach sounds sensible and makes me feel less a bit less tin foil hat. I agree that it’s bonkers that people can be very wary of certain things but at the same time give away everything about themselves on social media.

@Ariela I'll tell him, he'll be delighted/insufferable Wink

I was referring to the surprise on some election results.

If I remember correctly wasn't Labour supposed to have been a cert for the election before last.

No comments being made on the Guardian app having access to your facebook data, not just yours but looking at your friends as well?

Doryismyname · 30/03/2018 17:13

I guess the same applies to other newspapers like the DM where people use Facebook to login. The mind boggles at the implications of media having even more power to manipulate people.

The issue is on my fb feed I have several random organisations posting.

I did not ask for these organisations to post on my feed and I look at fb so few times I can't be arsed to block them.
So if someone is trying to put together a profile of me and the thousands like me they are going to not really get who we are.

Good luck in trying to manipulate that

Justanotherlurker · 03/04/2018 18:49

Its not just facebook or the "right wing" who are looking to build a profile its everyone from the Labour party to the Guardian etc.

Most are done at a level above so the Guardian etc collate info about you and access your friends data via facebook, Labour collate the info via experian etc.

There is a reason why Labour haven't been so vocal against the likes of the CA scandal, not only have they used them when CA was in its infancy but everyone does it, it's not just the broad brush categories anymore, big data is a huge business and everyone has embraced it
