No Easter fun at school?

Ok so probably going to get loads of horrible replies here saying I'm a pushy mother haha but my DD has just started at a CE Primary school and they basically do nothing to celebrate Easter apart from an assembly. I was with some friends with my youngest DC at a playgroup yesterday whose older children are at other schools and they were saying " oh we've got to decorate an Easter Bonnet later for the parade" or " We've got to decorate two eggs for the Easter egg competition " suppose it's quite good in a way that I haven't got the extra hassle but then part of me feels that it's a bit mean he's not getting to do these fun things too.

When you asked to volunteer to organise some Easter events what did the school say?

CuppaSarah · 28/03/2018 10:17

Our school is CE and all the children worked so hard towards the assembly at the church yesterday! It was beautiful and really lovely seeing some of the children that struggle being on stage, get up and confidently perform.

I'd prefer to see that over Easter bonnets and egg based crafts anyday!

knowwhereyourheadis · 28/03/2018 10:20

Well tvhearts it was you that mentioned EASTER fun.

If you mean SPRING celebrations then that's different.

A lot of it is still commercialised claptrap in order to sell chocolate, but if you want your kids to make a hat, do it at home.

A CE school will focus on the religious CE message, by having an assembly. Why would they do more?

DollyParsnip · 28/03/2018 10:23

Our (non Faith) School has the local Vicar coming in to do a special Easter Assembly with the KS2 Children but apart from that the School aren't doing much.

However, our PTA are organising an Easter Trail and a Cake Sale for all Children. The School asked them as it takes away the obligation from Parents to do craft stuff, such as Easter Bonnets, and also frees the School up to concentrate on the other stuff. It's worked well in the past as it's not compulsory (both are after school) and it's not taking Teachers away from their classes.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 10:26

I don't think the school does a lot of religious stuff. It did fantastically well in its OFSTED report but not quite so well in the recent Anglican schools report not sure what they're called. The school didn't do a nativity (and Dd didn't even make a Christmas card) but that was in favour of a larger summer performance. It's a teeny village school so I can see that it makes more sense to do that. The HT said that she wanted to focus on getting the kids settled into their new classes and didn't want to start learning Christmas songs in October! I could see that and agreed really but now with this too it's got me a bit bothered. I just don't want to feel that my children are going to be missing out on the fun parts of being in a primary school.

They have had a new had quiterecently. And I've seen a few eye rolls from parents when they mention things that the school "used to do"

Wow - I'm keen for dd to go to a non- religious secondary school (fed up of the heavy duty religion at her primary which was our second choice anyway) but I'm pretty amazed that a village school has stripped all that stuff out. I'd speak to the Governors.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 10:38

Hmm not sure what to do, really don't want to come across as OTT fussy parent 😕

bridgetreilly · 28/03/2018 10:40

Yes, she's missing out. I mean, probably she'll never recover from it. How can anyone grow up to be a well-adjusted adult if they didn't get to decorate an egg or wear an Easter Bonnet when they were 5? Or if they did but not at school? I'd probably write a formal complaint to the governors, OP. And go to the Daily Mail about it. It's political correctness gone mad, isn't it?

In other news, get over yourself.

NormHonal · 28/03/2018 10:40

Well we did egg decorating and all that stuff at a CofE primary school when I was a child almost 40 years ago!

There was an attempt to stamp out Easter Fun at DD’s school a few years ago when a new vicar came in and tried to make it all sombre. The parents rebelled and complained en masse.

Now my DCs are getting older I am becoming a bit more cynical about it and don’t enjoy the hassle of remembering to make/do everything but OP I do think it should be fun when they are little (early years/KS1).

gussyfinknottle · 28/03/2018 10:42

Make a bonnet at home. Maybe one for the whole household.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 10:44

Wow!! @bridgetreilly ouch!

Not helpful to OP but we can't have mention of Easter bonnets without this

No Easter fun at school?
RatOnnaStick · 28/03/2018 10:45

Our school is a community primary with little religious aspect or involvement and they have managed to put a bit of Christianity along with some fun into the mix. It doesn't have to be wholly one or the other.

liz70 · 28/03/2018 10:46

Oh come off it, everyone knows that Christians are past masters at adopting and blending native beliefs and cultures with their Christian faith, in order to make it more appealing to the masses. St. Patrick was a renowned early expert. Why do you think it's been so successful?

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 10:47

@CanIBuffalo 😂😂yes Easter bonnets are weird.

For anyone thinking that Im mad about Easter bonnets I'm not!! I'm not even saying that I want her to make one of those I just wanted her to have fun at school xx

Well I haven't seen this around yet this year so here's a link to the best easter bonnet ever that was shared on MN some years ago.
genius

ILookedintheWater · 28/03/2018 10:50

Dammit! Buffalo beat me to it while I was searching!

CanIBuffalo · 28/03/2018 10:51

Sometines 'fun' and 'at school' are mutually exclusive. Usually around the time that kids are drilled ready for national testing HmmSad

CanIBuffalo · 28/03/2018 10:52

I love it. It makes me howl every time Grin

Tartanwallpaper · 28/03/2018 10:58

My dc are at a Catholic school and we are religious - they've not made these things at school but I've taken it as positive because I can spread it out over the hols for no extra cash!

speakout · 28/03/2018 11:07

Oh fgs to all the people who seem to think I think Easter is about Easter bonnets and Chocolate eggs that clearly isn't the case and I think you're missing the point

No not missing the point at all.

To me:

Easter means chocolate/cakes/bunnies/floral decorations/Easter egg hunt/hot cross buns/

NOT Torture/human sacrifice/zombies.

Similarly Christmas means santa/reindeers/trees/stockings/turkey/holly/crackers/

Not jesus/camels/eastern kings/god.

Hope that helps.
