No Easter fun at school?

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 09:14

Ok so probably going to get loads of horrible replies here saying I'm a pushy mother haha but my DD has just started at a CE Primary school and they basically do nothing to celebrate Easter apart from an assembly. I was with some friends with my youngest DC at a playgroup yesterday whose older children are at other schools and they were saying " oh we've got to decorate an Easter Bonnet later for the parade" or " We've got to decorate two eggs for the Easter egg competition " suppose it's quite good in a way that I haven't got the extra hassle but then part of me feels that it's a bit mean he's not getting to do these fun things too.

The thing is, if schools do do Easter fun, then other parents will be complaining about "why is the school wasting school time on this? If they spent more time practicing number bonds with the kids, maybe I wouldn't have so much of the practice dumped on me at home."

If you want your child to make easter eggs, I suggest you do something with them at home.

moita · 28/03/2018 09:19

Are they more focused on the religious aspect? My son's toddler group is church based but they still had an egg hunt and crafts - seems a shame for your dd.

TheLastSoala · 28/03/2018 09:20

Maybe it’s because Easter eggs and bonnets have nothing to do with the Passion of Christ?

PhilODox · 28/03/2018 09:21

It's a CE school. The message if Easter isn't "fun"! Hmm

It's that Jesus was put to death, to absolve us of our sins. But because he was the son of God, he rose again from the dead and ascended to heaven.

Where do bonnets come I to it? Grin

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 09:24

Obviously we'll be doing stuff together at home over the holidays 🙄 I'm new to all this school stuff and just wondered what others thought. Seems as if my DDs school is the only one locally that doesn't do much that's all.

AuntLydia · 28/03/2018 09:24

Oh god I envy you. I hate the whole easter bonnet thing. It's a competitive nightmare here and not remotely about fun for the kids - the parents spend weeks with a glue gun creating Big Fat Gypsy Bonnet type creations that kids struggle to even carry on their poor little heads in the parade. Your kids are missing nothing!

RatOnnaStick · 28/03/2018 09:26

Ours have gone the other way.
Yesterday was supposed to be the annual walk to the church for Easter service which is a field or two away but the pouring rain took care of that so the vicar came to school for it instead.
Today is decorated eggs for ks1 and egg races for ks2.

Chocolate bingo tomorrow which we not only got to donate an egg to last Friday, (for the privilege of wearing non-uniform), but we get to donate a pound to play tomorrow as well. Lucky us.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 09:27

@AuntLydia 😂😂

OP posts:
tvhearts · 28/03/2018 09:29

@RatOnnaStick presumably chocolate bingo is a pta thing? I think the eggs/races sounds fun. But then again I've only been a parent of a school age child for 2 terms ... are you saying the novelty wears off?? haha

I think it's important to talk about Easter with children, assuming their parents are religious.

"... and that's why he did after being crucified for only 6 hours whereas pulmonary edema usually killed those nailed to the cross after 36-48 hours. Why are you crying little Johnny? He was bloody guilty!

AuntLydia · 28/03/2018 09:30

I shit you not, there was a kid with a wwf rink on his head complete with chick and lamb wrestlers. It was massive. According to my daughter he was really struggling with wearing it on the way back from the parade. We have gone way past pretty little hats with feathers and flowers on.

gussyfinknottle · 28/03/2018 09:36

I'm really old and, I admit from the Catholic tradition, we never had bonnets and bunnies in the 70s. Is this a c of e thing? Or another US import like trick or treat. Fair enough if it is.
That said, my DD's Catholic school did an Easter bonnet parade when she was in Reception a couple of years ago. I just think of Judy Garland/Fred Astaire and the sweet song about Easter Parades.

Ginnotginger · 28/03/2018 09:37

No Easter bonnets etc at school for my dgs either. However this week KS2 are acting out the following: Palm Sunday, the Last Supper and the Agony in the Garden on separate days this week in addition to weekly Mass. The plays will be watched by the whole school.
Last year when he was at Nursery, in a different school, all children in EYFS and KS1 made easter bonnets and had parades and KS2 decorate eggs.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 28/03/2018 09:39

gussy trick or treating is NOT American, it’s a Scottish and Irish tradition which is called ‘geysing’. When you go to houses you do a ‘trick’ eg a song or dance for which you get a ‘treat’ eg chocolate.

RatOnnaStick · 28/03/2018 09:42

@tvhearts It is fun, if you have a child with any artistic ability or interest. Ds1 is 7 and reluctantly did his egg this morning before school. He chose an abstract creation of many stripes in felt pen all over it. When you've sat on the bedroom floor hairdrying the bastard creation to make it set before venturing out in the pissing rain the novelty soon wears off.

Ds2 was fine. He did his yesterday - red. All over. His hands looked like a crime scene when he'd finished.

I am looking forward to next year when I have to help Ds1 and his friends design and build transport for a raw egg.

@4funnels Grin my sentiments exactly.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 09:46

So...aibu about this? Do you thing she is missing out?

bookmum08 · 28/03/2018 09:47

These things are usually organised by the PTA. Does the school have a PTA? You could join or start one up.

gussyfinknottle · 28/03/2018 09:49

This, I know about guysing and I am pretty sure that isn't where we got Trick or Treating from. They had guysing when I was a kid in the 70s but TandT was only in Charlie Brown cartoons.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 28/03/2018 09:50

gussy they are the same thing. Just with a dofferent name, and the Americans don’t do anything to get their treat

Herja · 28/03/2018 09:54

I'm Catholic and DS (aged 5) is very interested in human biology. We had pretty much that discussion a couple of days ago 4funnels.

We do easter bonnets at shool OP. And they make cards and go to mass. I love it, seems a shame your school doesn't do it.

junebirthdaygirl · 28/03/2018 09:55

Did they have missed days for snow? They may have decided to keep Easter to a minimum to make up time. Or afraid after missing snow days parents would complain about time wasted faffing around.

knowwhereyourheadis · 28/03/2018 10:06

Oh yes the Easter story is absolutely FULL of FUN FUN FUN!

I remember as a child being taught how Jesus stuffed his face with chocolate before cheerfully running after the Easter bunny.
At least I think that's how it went......

childmindingmumof3 · 28/03/2018 10:08

Religious schools will cover the religious aspects.

Do all the pagan Spring fertility festival fun stuff at home.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 10:12

Oh fgs to all the people who seem to think I think Easter is about Easter bonnets and Chocolate eggs that clearly isn't the case and I think you're missing the point 🙄

OP posts:
thegreylady · 28/03/2018 10:13

Here there is a church service with kids’ doing readings and a display of their interpretations of The Stations of the Cross (yr5 and6)The Resurrection (yrs3, 4, ) and Easter Flowers and animals (yrR ,yr1 and yr2).
In the afternoon there is egg decorating followed by egg rolling.
After the holidays there is an Easter play performed by yrs 3 and 4.
This is a church school with fewer then a hundred pupils aged 3-11.
