What can I put in salads that will make me feel more full?

I was going to post this in weightloss but actually it's not about weightloss but about eating to be healthy, even though I would like to see an effect on my weight.

I've been reading lots of books which basically advocate a daily diet of something like: avocado on toast, eggs, green salad with feta, nuts and grains, lots of almonds/walnuts/cashews in between meals, as much fruit and veg as possible, chicken/fish salads.

Every time I eat a salad for a meal it feels like a snack. I feel like it is my pre-meal snack! I don't know if this is a habit I've got into or whether people who genuinely eat like this feel hungry still after a salad?

This evening I had rocket, feta, avocado, walnut, tomato and olives with plenty of olive oil. A big portion. But I did not feel full. I've just had to eat three pieces of toast before bed to even feel like my stomach is full...

What can I put in salads that would make me feel more full?

You haven't mentioned beans and pulses, eg chick peas, tinned mixed beans, black eyed beans, green lentils. Or sweetcorn.

Jassmells · 27/03/2018 00:02

I don't know but if you find out can you let me know!

For it to be a meal, as opposed to a side, I like to include a protein source, so eg. Chicken and bacon; tuna mayo; chicken, pine nut and sun dried tomatoes; ham; hard boiled egg/frittata.

Deshasafraisy · 27/03/2018 00:03

Tin of chickpeas.

danadas · 27/03/2018 00:03

Boiled eggs, pasta, rice, quinoa, cous cous, new potatoes etc

If you are limiting carbs then pickled onions or beetroot make it feel a bit heartier.

AlexanderHamilton · 27/03/2018 00:04

More protein will make you feel full. Chicken, eggs, chia seeds, quinoa, lentils or other beans. You also need complex carbs.

Whizbang · 27/03/2018 00:04

Lots and lots of lovely cheese. Kind of defeats the object though!

Butterymuffin · 27/03/2018 00:05

Cheese? I mean something more substantial than feta. Cubes of cheddar or a blue cheese.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 27/03/2018 00:06

Chickpeas are nice in salad. Also shredded cabbage, carrots, apple things that make your salad take longer to eat, take more chewing so that your stomach and brain have time to register that good has arrived.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 27/03/2018 00:06

Good should be food.

flowerslemonade · 27/03/2018 00:07

yorkshire puddings

flowerslemonade · 27/03/2018 00:09

Sorry, how about putting some chicken in it, or having crusty bread on the side... I used to make a salad that was half a can of tuna, boiled eggs, capers, black olives, green leaves, tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and sea salt. It was really nice.

doctorcuntybollocks · 27/03/2018 00:09

A baked potato the size of your head.

MammaH2018 · 27/03/2018 00:09

Chicken
Turkey
Quorn
Hard Boiled eggs

Flutterbyeee · 27/03/2018 00:10

Jacket Potato, white fish, cous cous, eggs and avocado, parma ham and peach slices. I also add seeds. Olive oil will soften them and gives the salad a bit more "bite".

KirstenRaymonde · 27/03/2018 00:10

I don’t eat meat and rarely eggs. I’d have maybe cous cous with chickpeas, or quinoa or maybe black rice or pasta with lots of salad veg.

KirstenRaymonde · 27/03/2018 00:10

Avocado always a great addition

Storminateapot · 27/03/2018 00:10

We had salad tonight with a hot hard boiled egg, a bit of mackerel and some halved new potatoes together with leaves, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and pine nuts. Very filling.

statetrooperstacey · 27/03/2018 00:11

Giant couscous, eggs, beans, cooked green beans

Twilight456 · 27/03/2018 00:13

I find that a massive portion of shredded iceburg lettuce makes me feel more full than any pasta or rice dish- think because its so crunchy and takes a while to chew. Also i have to have a protein such as chicken or tuna. Chickpeas are very filling and I also like raw broccoli chopped up,again crunchy so takes longer to eat, and always have tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot and peppers etc, i never set a limit on veg in my salads as I'd rather feel full than worry about the calories, however its all good stuff anyway.

SandAndSea · 27/03/2018 00:16

I had a salad tonight and was stuffed afterwards. OK, it might have been the chips but, I also had the usual leaves & tomatoes plus bean sprouts, seeds, chopped peppers, grated carrot and boiled broccoli.

Other faves in my house are houmous, chick peas, rice, beetroot, JPs (white or sweet), couscous, olives, grated or roasted courgette... (Can't think of any more.)

TattyCat · 27/03/2018 00:19

Don't know but I'm sitting in bed feeling hungry now. I love salad.

CadyHeron · 27/03/2018 00:21

If it's a salad, definitely need some protein in there to fill you up.

This evening I had rocket, feta, avocado, walnut, tomato and olives with plenty of olive oil
I'd be starving and wanting toast half an hour after too!
Something like chicken, turkey or tuna in there as well.

Puffycat · 27/03/2018 00:22

Salads are shite when you’re hungry! I like a BIG plate of veg, small protein & NO carbs, bit of gravy, sorted.
Ps did I say BIG plate of veg?

HermionesRightHook · 27/03/2018 00:22

More protein, and don't skimp on the actual salad. I feel like I need a bigger plateful to make it make me full - but if that plate is mostly leaves then it takes longer to eat. Also, some heart veg like raw carrots that take a bit of chewing helps a lot as well.

If youv'e got a lot of oil on there that will help you feel fuller, but you might consider swapping out some of the oil for something like skin on chicken, or more cheese - same calories but more protein.
