to want to scrap daylight savings?

Rant: I hate this day every year. And it's partner in October. Whatever the (weak if you ask me) arguments were about initiating daylight savings, I cannot for the life of me understand why we need it still in this 24/7 globalised non-stop world we live in. If you need daylight to work, then work when there's daylight - who cares what the clock says?! OH has tried to defend it citing historical features of employment law etc, but I just don't accept that there weren't alternative measures that would;t mess with your body clock twice a week. His subsequent argument is that now we have it, why go to the expense of changing it.....I would argue that there are a significant number of missed NHS appointments because of people forgetting to change their clocks, and presumably there are missed business hours etc......AIBU in wanting to get rid of daylight savings?!

that should say twice a year, obvs, not twice a week!

Meh, I like it.

I used to work in an area of a country that was against day light savings, they argued it would ruin their curtains and confuse the cattle.

ScreamingValenta · 26/03/2018 17:54

YANBU - I hate it too. We may be in the minority, though, judging by other threads on here Grin.

IWantMyHatBack · 26/03/2018 17:57

I love it, I'm so glad when we get to this point every year. Means there's an extra hour of sunshine after school and into the evening, we can go to the park after tea, or the kids can play out a little longer.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 26/03/2018 17:57

YANBU.

I saw that other thread and I wanted to break up the daylight savings love-in. But I was afraid of sounding bitter - how is it even possible to hate the change in BOTH directions? But I do.

unicornfarts · 26/03/2018 17:58

confuse the cattle?!!!! Don't get it - do the cows look at the clock then? If you want to milk them an hour before dawn when their udders look full, then do it no matter what the clock says??

Not getting the curtains bit either - just open the curtains when the sun comes up?

There was one a study that estimated how much money and carbon would be saved if you just stuck to one time (can’t remember if it was summer or winter), and it was a lot! The idea being that it’s more efficient to heat/light a workplace for several people for an hour than for the individuals to do so in their homes

unicornfarts · 26/03/2018 18:00

there's no extra sunshine! there's the same amount of sunshine - you could just as easily say that between Mar25th and Oct 26th termites, school will start at 8 not 9am, and finish at 2 not 3pm..... (or whatever). Its no greater faff than changing every clock and coaxing kids out of/ into bed when the body clock is expecting something else!

OP posts:
unicornfarts · 26/03/2018 18:00

term times - not termites!!

I love it when the clocks go forward. I'd get rid of GMT if I could and have daylight saving time all year round

DragonMummy1418 · 26/03/2018 20:22

YANBU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate it!

Leave it as it is now, extra light all year long!

IWantMyHatBack · 26/03/2018 20:22
Hmm

It's lighter for an hour longer, which means we get more time after school to do things outside.

Changing school start times is a stupid suggestion.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/03/2018 20:23

I love it when the clocks go forward, it means I can do something in the evenings rather than just sit indoors.

Makingworkwork · 26/03/2018 20:23

They tried temporarily changing it and more children were injured in car accidents.

Redlocks28 · 26/03/2018 20:25

Can’t we just keep the clocks being 1 hour forward all year round?!

MissionItsPossible · 26/03/2018 20:31

It’s good when we get an extra hour in bed 😇 When we lose an hour, I’m not particularly enamoured or impressed.

ilovesooty · 26/03/2018 20:38

I love the clocks going forward. I suddenly feel so much happier. Hate the other direction.

LoniceraJaponica · 26/03/2018 20:38

I love the extra hour of daylight in the evening.

MongerTruffle · 26/03/2018 20:42

YANBU, but I would have UTC time all year round. I love dark evenings (and in fact everything that other people say are miserable: the cold, the dark, snow).

There was one a study that estimated how much money and carbon would be saved if you just stuck to one time (can’t remember if it was summer or winter), and it was a lot! The idea being that it’s more efficient to heat/light a workplace for several people for an hour than for the individuals to do so in their homes
A 2017 meta-analysis of 44 studies found that DST leads to electricity savings of only 0.34% during the days when DST applies

MongerTruffle · 26/03/2018 20:43

There should be a full stop at the end, obviously.

Andrewofgg · 26/03/2018 20:44

We can't abolish it unilaterally. It's bad enough when America and Europe (and this is one matter where we have to stay with the EU) change a week apart.

I try to organise an office bash on the Monday after the clocks go back in October. It's suddenly dark in the evenings, often damp, and still a long time to Christmas. A perfect time for a curry.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 26/03/2018 20:48

I loathe the clocks going forward. Lighter nights make me really grumpy. Happy to keep the one time but leave it from October. Youll still get your lighter nights but i wont be sat here in july looking at a slowly fading sun at 11pm. Urgh.

Topseyt · 26/03/2018 21:18

I love it when clocks go forward. I am so much happier with the longer and lighter evenings.

I think we should remain on BST year round, never putting the clocks back again in October. Forget GMT.

unicornfarts · 26/03/2018 21:34

Iwantmyhatback agree that changing school times is unecessary- my point is that I don't see a need to change any of it. Leave the clocks as they are! The seasons change and there's more sunlight in the summer. I really don't see the issue given that we have so much technology that we use day in day out to get round light levels.

Bluelady · 26/03/2018 21:37

I love it when the clocks go forward and we get light evenings again. It really reinforces that Spring's coming.
