Why do people continue to get get certain breed of dogs?

We all know that certain breeds have a really bad reputation. Why do dog owners continue to get them? For the record I've never witnessed any of these dogs act in a bad way, but still. Surely if your going to get judged for keeping them, why would you do it? Is it a status thing?

frantically my neighbour and friend has a St Bernard and he's a lovely dog my only complaint is that he still thinks he's a lap dog and fifteen stone of dog trying to get on your knee takes some getting used to Grin

Praisebe · 26/03/2018 15:35

It's the Pitbulls with the locking jaw not the staffies and yes it is real its been proved by police and vet's that when they lock onto you they won't let go

Frequency · 26/03/2018 15:38

It's physiologically impossible for any mammal to lock its jaw.

Bull breeds have strong, muscular jaws that can be hard to prise open if they wrap them around something they don't want to give up, but they don't lock.

FranticallyPeaceful · 26/03/2018 15:41

@fleshmarketclose Indeed Grin

I thought this thread was going to be about those poor bred-to-the-point-of-deformity doggos with the squashed-up faces and the poppy-out-eyes that my in-laws seem to love. I can't stand the idea of those poor pups being born to suffer because some people think they are cute Sad

fleshmarketclose · 26/03/2018 15:57

frantically Grin pretty shocking though when my own lapdog weighs 6kg

Praisebe · 26/03/2018 16:33

There's a petition to ban Brachycephalic for their own safety but that's another thread entirely but also a good example of bad owner's and selfishness

picklemepopcorn · 26/03/2018 17:42

I would love 15 stone of St. Bernard cuddled on my lap.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 26/03/2018 17:44

Labradors are viscious b@stards. That's what my dog says anyway.

pigsDOfly · 26/03/2018 17:46

Yes I actually thought it was about pugs and similar dogs when I saw the title.

Actually reading the OP it could be about pugs, the OP doesn't actually mention any specific breeds. Not sure why you'd start a thread about something but not be prepared to say what it is.

RoseDog · 26/03/2018 17:51

Mine is a diva stropping, food mooching, spoilt shite! She has tried to die many times but after being at deaths door she springs back to normality leaving us with huge vet bills until insurance pays out!

We got her because there was so many of them in rescues that needed a sofa home!

Dipitydoda · 26/03/2018 17:59

I love all dogs, but I do think certain breeds are disproportionally owned by twats. Both the big bad fuckers who could tear an adult to shreads if the mood took them and the owner could do fuck all about it ( 2 of these walked past me today with some dodgy looking bloke on the wrong end of the lead) and the poor dogs that have been bred to sound like they’re on the verge of dropping down dead any second (British bull dogs, pugs, frenchies) why do people buy these dogs? Usually at twice the price of other breeds. Let’s all get a Labrador

alwayscassandra · 26/03/2018 18:04

sorry to hear about a vicious mini sausage dog, ours is the softest thing going, you'd be more likely to get licked to death by her than attacked. I'd not leave her alone with small children for her own protection though, you can damage a sausage back if you pick them up badly or drop them, and it's not fair on them to be treated as toys. Also, I'd not leave her with a small immobile baby, she loves to cuddle up to a warm person for a snooze and I'd not want her to smother one. She barks at cats, and every so often some dogs, doesn't like strangers petting her without letting her sniff them and get to know them, she just needs time to feel confident, but has never ever bitten anyone

TheLastNigel · 26/03/2018 20:33

I've got two Jack Russells which I got on purpose because a) I did research on what breed would be best for us and b) I don't believe that one persons bad experience of a breed is evidence enough for me to decide that all dogs of a certain ilk are 'little brutes'.
I love my two, they are aces. Character full, charming and fun, and no more or less barky than lots of other Dogs. Certainly less bother than my Mums Labrador...

TovaGoldCoin · 26/03/2018 21:28

I've owned various breeds of dogs over the last 40 years, if I include childhood. The poodle cross collie was mental, whoever thought that was a good idea. Cost me hundreds in behaviourist. The labrador destroyed my parents kitchen, along with a boxer who ate through a fridge.... The jack Russell of my aunt bit me on the face, and I have a scar. The English and Staffordshire bull terriers we own now are darling, loving dogs, who need a bit of extra work in puppy hood, as they are either super smart, or thick and stubborn. Deed not breed. The middle class wankers with the dalmatians and spaniels should work a bit harder at training their dogs, IMHO. My village is awash with uncontrolled dogs.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/03/2018 21:36

My brother has a staffie...his one is as soft as shit

We took it for a walk and a lady with a yappy little dog yelled at us for having an uncontrolled dog Shock

Her dog was being throttled by its own collar as it tried to attack the staffie and the staffie looked like this Confused

She was saying she was going to call the police and everything...it was quite weird

liz70 · 26/03/2018 21:48

"No dog should be left alone with a child irrespective of the breed"

Oh dear. I've left our pathetic whippet alone with one or more of our three DDs countless times. They're all still here to tell the tale, although I can't swear they mightn't have occasionally been rendered unconsciousness by one of his farts.

MrsMozart · 26/03/2018 21:51

I have two Rotties and a GSD - I really wish the people who keep buying little dogs and allowing them to bark and snarl at my dogs would reconsider (or at least go to training classes!).

tabulahrasa · 26/03/2018 22:11

I always think this is such a weird question - why do people like things I don’t? Um... because they’re not you?....

I picked a breed of dog because it suited me, what I want from a dog and my lifestyle and what I can offer in terms of exercise and what have you, what people who weren’t me and didn’t own one didn’t really factor in to it tbh.

LadyMetroland · 26/03/2018 22:23

Hahaha @ the poster upthread who called her staffies her 'fur babies'... and then said she'd never left her children alone in a room with them.

Okaaay. So you're happy to have animals in your house that PROBABLY won't kill your kids. Great.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 26/03/2018 22:28

No responsible dog owner would leave ANY dog in a room alone with children

reallyanotherone · 27/03/2018 08:12

Fairly sure my 8 and 12 yo are more danger to our tiny yorkie than the dog is to them.

Tbh they are more likely to be bitten by the cat or the hamster.

akitas2 · 27/03/2018 08:15

Totally agree with you Mrs Mozart!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/03/2018 08:17

really

Ive read that you shouldnt leave children alone with any dog

For the safety of both

What i read had nothing to do with the breed just the dog

AmIAWeed · 27/03/2018 08:33

Having had german sheperds as a kid, I have finally managed to get my husband to meet some and agree to us having one. The breeder is also the person we took our cocker spaniel puppy to so we have a really good relationship. We were number 4 on the waiting list for a girl, his latest litter had just 2 girls so we thought we wouldn't get one this time...except he met 2 of the people above us on the waiting list, spoke to them about the type of dog they wanted and refused to sell to them as they wanted a tough/security/attack dog. He breeds for temperament and is doing the dog breed a huge service in my humble opinion.
The person who sold us our cocker spaniel however let us view, take home the same day with no checks or questions, all she wanted was the money.

It is NEVER the dog, always the way they are treated by humans that causes issues. Be it humans that don't breed with the right temperament, who don't socialise, train or give the dog the care they need that causes issues.
