Why do people continue to get get certain breed of dogs?

We all know that certain breeds have a really bad reputation. Why do dog owners continue to get them? For the record I've never witnessed any of these dogs act in a bad way, but still. Surely if your going to get judged for keeping them, why would you do it? Is it a status thing?

Wow pickle you've been quite unfortunate to come across so many unpleasant Akitas... It's not a breed you tend to come across commonly, when I have I don't believe any have behaved in the manner you describe-certainly mine was not at all that way. Must be quite a lot of twats where you live Hmm

Gide · 25/03/2018 20:06

Staffordshire bull terriers should be banned. How many are ending up in rescue situations? They are also very poor with other animals and tend towards aggression.

What utter shit! Where’s your proof?

I was judging so hard my eyes were bleeding.

Pmsl!!

Drainedandconfused · 25/03/2018 20:32

I'm on my third Rottie, she's nearly 9 months old and as soppy as they come. My previous two were very similar. I'm guessing this is the sort of breed you are talking about?
I chose to get a Rottie because I knew two as a child, an elderly neighbour had them and i loved them dearly, to me they were big playful bears.
From having two I can say that they are a highly intelligent, affectionate and playful breed. They love to please and are quick to learn. They make great family dogs, I have an adult DD and a 12yr DS with severe SEN, there has never been any issues of aggression with either of my DC. There has never been any issues of aggression outside the home with other dogs or people either.
I read all the right books and took them to training classes and worked hard to ensure I had obedient dogs.

She's gorgeous Drained 😍

Drainedandconfused · 25/03/2018 20:41

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom...... thank you, she's an absolute dream, shes going through the teenage gangly stage right now, she's all legsGrin

insertimaginativeusername · 25/03/2018 20:44

Oh drained she is beautiful 😍 I have a huge soft spot for rotties.

Dizzybacon · 25/03/2018 20:50

You mean these? Mine is a Dogue de Bordeaux cross. She has been raised by responsible owners who understand what they have. Interestingly when we go to country shows, this dog puts many of the archetypal 'well behaved' and 'family' dogs to shame with her perfect behaviour, good manners, respect for her owners and faultless attitude around other people and dogs.

As for trusting dogs around young children, I wouldn't leave ANY dog alone with a child.

Drainedandconfused · 25/03/2018 20:52

Thank youSmile she's a softie, she loves everybody, never had a grumble out of her.
I can understand that 8 stone of dog walking towards you can be scary for some people and if I'm walking towards people who have kids and are eyeing her up warily I will cross the road but there seems to be more people who want to stroke her than avoid her.

Drainedandconfused · 25/03/2018 20:54

Dizzybacon...... another gorgeous misunderstood breed!

Dizzybacon · 25/03/2018 20:58

Drained, there aren't any many dogs I would trust loose with my chickens. And don't get me started on other people's dogs snapping and biting around my horse! I take my dog out on hacks and if she meets another horse, dog or walker she sits until I tell her to move. Shame I cannot say that about many 'normal' dogs

Scotsrule · 25/03/2018 20:58

I have a Dogue de Boudreaux and I never turn my back on him.......

If he is not trying to kill me by drowning me in slobber, he is laying his 15 stone frame on me for a cuddle. He is really into sleep deprivation as a torture method also, snores like a train 😡 😉

Dizzybacon · 25/03/2018 21:02

Scots we don't know exactly how recent her Dogue de Bordeaux line is, looking at her maybe grandparents. We do know she is crossed with the 'dangerous' breed

Greyhorses · 25/03/2018 21:06

I have two german Shepherds mainly so when I forget to lock the front door and can’t be bothered to get up I can still sleep soundly Wink

Oh and so people don’t stop and talk to me on a walk. Nobody talks to you if you have a shepherd other than other mad shepherd people Grin

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 25/03/2018 21:08

Awwww & another cutey, not a breed I've come across Dizzy but could happily squeeeeeeeeeze the life out of Grin

Zeelove · 25/03/2018 21:08

op you’re the type of person who calls
her period ‘Aunt Flo’, who uses ‘coloured’ because you still think it’s more politically correct than ‘black’ and whispers any word she’s uncomfortable with aren’t you?* *

Far from 😂 someone said they think this thread is pointless. Why, because it hasn't caused lots of arguments? Personally I think it was a rather nice thread , and I've learnt that people will continue to get the dogs because they don't give a fuck. And we've had some cute dog pics. Sorry it wasn't the bitch fest you were hoping

It doesn't make a good media story if a small dogs bites someone or attacks another dog so they focus on certain breeds which is completely unfair. I foster dogs and I have been bitten by shih tzus, a yorkie and a poodle. The tiny yorkie did the most damage and I had to go get a tetanus and thought I would need stitches but thankfully didn't. I tend to foster ones with special needs and I do not blame the dogs at all, they all had terrible lives before coming into rescue. Any dog can be a danger, believing everything in the media is the problem!

Ariesgirl1988 · 25/03/2018 21:20

I am so fed up of the SBT bashing in general. They're not vicious dogs its more that the owners are irresponsible with them. Some people these days expect that their kids can do whatever to the dog. I had a SBT growing up and my mum put the boundary down and never allowed me to do whatever to the dog and she was a lovely dog never growled or bit she was very friendly funny enough it was the Yorkie that got jealous and eventually had to be given away to someone else who didn't have children. It's the little ankle biting dogs imo that are the worse ones especially the chihuahuas! I've never met a nice one all of them have been yappy ankle biters who have been spoiled rotten and treated like a baby not a dog even the owners think its cute when they "nip"! seriously this has happened to me with Chihuahua's the owners think its cute when they nip! guess what it's not and it really hurts this one particular owner is lucky i didn't kick her little precious after it bit clean through my trousers and broke my skin I ended up in A&E having a tetanus jab!

Scotsrule · 25/03/2018 21:24

Either way dizzy - she is lush. I wasn’t sold on ddb’s when we were talking about getting a dog, read loads of horror stories about their size and stubbornness but honestly, don’t know if I would have any other breed now, so much personality it’s unreal!! Haha

applesareredandgreen · 25/03/2018 21:24

I think Jack Russells have an unfairly bad reputation. My Jack Russell is such a loving, friendly little dog. He plays happily with other dogs, not snappy or aggressive, just wants to lick every one. He is very yappy though!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 25/03/2018 21:29

Scots she looks so sad!! Grin

Dizzybacon · 25/03/2018 21:30

Scots how beautiful Smile

Dizzybacon · 25/03/2018 21:34

In my pic with the horse, she is a bit wary because the horse takes chunks out of people. Never bitten the dog though. And the pic with the cat, kitty is poorly and she always cuddles and keeps the cat warm. She always looks sad when the cat is ill

Scotsrule · 25/03/2018 21:49

Always looks sad - means that he gets away with murder 😂

reallyanotherone · 25/03/2018 21:55

I have a yorkie. He is treated like a dog, and therefore behaves like one. He is fab with other dogs- i do not pick him up and allow the other dog owner to take the lead as to whether they are introduced. Dogs and people he has a tendency to just flip over and lie on his back in submission.

He is not yappy at all. He is over a year old and has only just started to bark if he hears a noise outside at night.

My only issue is he’s not as well trained as i’d like as he had a leg injury which had kept him housebound until recently. So his recall and basic commands aren’t great. My last yorkie was totally obedient to sit/stay, heel and recall, on and off lead.

I have to stop people babying him though. Carrying him round all the time. I am often telling visitors to put him down- “he’s got legs, he can walk!”...

Praisebe · 25/03/2018 21:56

Because they are mass bred and sold off cheaply to the first buyer by people who only care about supplementing their income at an animal's expense and then when these owners realise the dog isn't for them it ends up in a dog shelter which is why its the most common breed to end up there and shelters are overrun with these dogs that have been poorly trained poorly fed and poorly socialised sometimes even used as guard dogs or fighting dogs so they then can't be rehomed and get pts and then another load of them come through the shelter and the whole cycle starts again ! So yes OP i know exactly which breeds your talking about and i agree with you
