Why do people continue to get get certain breed of dogs?

We all know that certain breeds have a really bad reputation. Why do dog owners continue to get them? For the record I've never witnessed any of these dogs act in a bad way, but still. Surely if your going to get judged for keeping them, why would you do it? Is it a status thing?

Staff x and an American bulldog x here.

Worst bit, the slobber that the ABD keeps flicking up the cooker and fridge.

Best bit, the cuddles.

BanjoStarz · 25/03/2018 16:01

There isn’t a single dog attack that I can think of that hasn’t been the direct fault of a bad owner.

Humans are bad, not dogs.

poppy196 · 25/03/2018 16:02

Op where is your head at ?
Why post on why people keep certain dogs ?
You admit yourself you haven't had a problem with any breed .
We have a staff , he is our 3rd staff , he's not great with other dogs but to be fair to him he would never start a fight but if provoked he will join in which is fair enough .
Any dog can fight and be aggressive but with all bull breeds they have the power to hurt more .
He's so gentle with us and in play his back teeth could remove a finger but he's careful with us because he knows his strength .
Not sure what your hoping to achieve with this post but to be honest any dog can be aggressive and people don't choose the dog on how the world views them for keeping this dog .

My very dangerous Akita Hmm the cat is a new addition and and totally bosses her off her own bed, out of her spot at my feet... I alwats walk her on a lead because she has shit selective recall and she's ok with most dogs (except for yappy little shits that are off lead), generally choosing to hide behind me.

Staffies are the only breed of dog I trust with a young family. That's why I will always have one :)

user1471459936 · 25/03/2018 16:12

Get rid of all dogs. Horrible things.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 25/03/2018 16:25

Gide what is it exactly about Akitas that makes them the only dog you're scared of?
They're beautiful dogs who resemble rather large teddy bears, or so we were told by numerous small children who felt the need to give ours a cuddle.

YourVagesty · 25/03/2018 16:27

OP - it depends. If you are thinking of staffies etc, I think it's because some people love them and some (idiots) think they make them look hard.

Was having this conversation last night with somebody as I read an article that referred to them as 'the dog of yobs'. It's people that have given them that reputation and it's not the fault of the breed.

I wish we had strict dog ownership laws in this country, I really do.

YourVagesty · 25/03/2018 16:28

Humans are bad, not dogs

This, in spades

YourVagesty · 25/03/2018 16:31

The worst dog I ever owned for bad behaviour btw, was a chihuahua.

I loved him but he is literally the only dog i've ever owned where I was slightly relieved when he died Grin

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/03/2018 16:32

Well some breeds a grown adult would have difficulty fighting a dog off should it turn

But some people believe that the right training will always prevent this and take the risk of having such dogs around their small children

They will always come back with it’s all to do with the owners and the breeds get a bad press Hmm yet others get certain breeds because they are so powerful

Well one of them is certainly right

reallyanotherone · 25/03/2018 16:34

I thought the stats were that most dog bites are by labradors?

So why aren’t we talking about labradors being dangerous? Why pick on staffies? Because they look strong?

Lovesagin · 25/03/2018 16:35

The first one is right.

littleteethies · 25/03/2018 16:42

My GS x Akita
Obviously an evil demented uncontrollable beast, I mean just look at him!
What a load of rubbish OP

Staffies don't socialise well... 🤔

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2018 16:46

As an owner of a dog that seems to be hated on here, I only ever had trouble with Labradors and Collies biting us both!
My postie reliably informs me that it is Labradors and collies who bite postmen the most, and from experience i can see why, but it is always the large dog owner that gets the devil dog name!

NorthEndGal · 25/03/2018 16:47

How a dog is raised and socialized determines their behaviour. It's their lived experience, not the breed or genetics, that determines how they react to a stressor.

This holds for dogs, horses and people!
Pic of me being loved to death

yolofish · 25/03/2018 16:50

The only dog that has ever bitten me was a Dalmatian - savaged me on one arm, was removed, was brought back out to 'make friends' and then savaged the other arm. Fucker. I am not keen on Dalmatians, but prepared to believe me this was a rogue one. Staffies are some of the nicest dogs in the world, have met some lovely GSDs Dobermans and Rotties, and some really shitty Yorkies. Horses (or dogs) for courses.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/03/2018 16:52

Really some people don’t get these breeds because of their strength

No of course not I see young men walking around with King Charles and Poodles all the time in south London I guess they keep the Chihuahuas hidden in their pockets for hidden protection

mintich · 25/03/2018 16:53

Had two Rottweilers, two German shepherds and a Doberman. Lovely dogs, gentle personalities, great with kids and our other pets (rabbits) they need to be trained properly. Yes there will be some who will buy dogs as a status (tends to be staffs and Akitas now but the status dog seems to change every few years)
But for those that train and treat these dogs well, they are all wonderful breeds.....which is true of any dog

Aliceleigh · 25/03/2018 16:53

I work with dogs and have never been bitten (or shown any aggressive behaviour) from any of the staffs or bull breeds in my care. I cannot say the same for terriers and doodles.

Lovesagin · 25/03/2018 16:56

I would have said mainly the first one, with a few dicks for the second reason, but you said one of them was right, so.......

Nikephorus · 25/03/2018 16:58

I've got a Staffie who adores people (and they adore her back). Softest thing ever. Great with my cats (who also love her) & fine with other dogs.
The vet once said that the dog they'd had the most problems with was chocolate labs! (I'm not a Boxer fan myself)
Still, on the upside, this thread has produced some cute photos. But if I could bottle my DDog's mustard gas I'd send you some OP.....

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/03/2018 17:05

No it is not always peoples experience that determines behavior it’s far more complex than that

There are medical issues that can determine behavior for humans and for animals

BeverlyGoldberg · 25/03/2018 17:08

I was once chased by a nasty little shit of a Yorkshire terrier. Beats me why anyone would want one but each to their own.
