Why do people continue to get get certain breed of dogs?

We all know that certain breeds have a really bad reputation. Why do dog owners continue to get them? For the record I've never witnessed any of these dogs act in a bad way, but still. Surely if your going to get judged for keeping them, why would you do it? Is it a status thing?

Because they know and like the breed and it fits in with their family life well?

HarrietKettle · 25/03/2018 14:05

You haven't named any breeds so what exactly are you referring to?

bluebells1 · 25/03/2018 14:06

Name the breeds and we can take it from there.

elQuintoConyo · 25/03/2018 14:08

Sausage dogs. They're sausage dogs, aren't they? Confess!

Sausage dogs down our road are always teasing my dog telling her they're really made of sausages, then letting her down when she bites them. Shocking behaviour.

I'm not even going to mention chihuahuasevil fuckers

elQuintoConyo · 25/03/2018 14:09

That should read evil fuckers and the Hmm emoji!

ghostyslovesheets · 25/03/2018 14:09

Yorkies - yappy ankle biters - no idea why people continue to buy them

my guess would be that RESPONSIBLE dog owners invest time in training and socialising their dogs and protect them from harm - which is why they buy them

Theknacktoflying · 25/03/2018 14:09

The demonising of dogs and generalisation of breeds doesn't do any one any favours.
A dog with proper training, owner engagement and some responsible breeding is always first prize ...

littlecabbage · 25/03/2018 14:12

Yes, but breed does matter, because an irresponsible dog owner with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is much less of a danger to children than an irresponsible dog owner with a Rottweiler.

Zeelove · 25/03/2018 14:15

We all know what breeds I'm referring to. I'm not saying they are bad. Like I said I'm just going by what I read. And it's a genuine question. I know lots of people say they are extremely loving dogs, but surely lots of breeds are and they don't have the 'bad rep'.

HarrietKettle · 25/03/2018 14:16

No, I don't think we do. So if you want to make an actual point perhaps you should name them.

Lime123 · 25/03/2018 14:17

We all know what the op means here. And she does have a point. You rarely hear of a sausage dog killing an infant do you?

I don’t get it either, why would you have one of those dogs is beyond me, especially if you’ve got kids.

aquashiv · 25/03/2018 14:17

Which breeds?

Theknacktoflying · 25/03/2018 14:18

Using that logic - perhaps we should stop convicted criminals and bankers from having kids -they might just turn out to be like their parents ....

Tigger85 · 25/03/2018 14:19

I have two staffies and a mastif x. I have them because I went to the shelter and liked these particular dogs and adopted them. I don't care what people think, my dogs are lovely.

HarrietKettle · 25/03/2018 14:20

as far as I know there is no dog breed called Voldemort and can't be spoken out loud. Just name it.

Helpmeplan · 25/03/2018 14:20

Assume you mean these absolute killing machines

Why do people continue to get get certain breed of dogs?
Dolphincrossing · 25/03/2018 14:20

Different tastes?

Zeelove · 25/03/2018 14:20

I think people are assuming that I'm saying these dogs are bad. I'm not.

SquashFeet · 25/03/2018 14:20

I've never met a nice jack Russell I must admit - why people buy them I don't know

HarrietKettle · 25/03/2018 14:21

That's weird as I've met some lovely ones Confused

Frequency · 25/03/2018 14:22

OP is clearly referring to white terriers.

I have no idea OP, why people do it. Maybe they're addicted to bathing dogs and hoovering? Maybe the assume all dogs enjoy bathing in mud the second they get out of the shower?

I admit, I am a white terrier owner. I didn't realise, when I acquired him, how much bathing he would require and how much effort would be involved in keeping him the correct colour. It won't be a mistake I make again. Black or dark tan dogs only from this point forwards, I learned my lesson.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 25/03/2018 14:24

Help that is one adorable photo.

I had an Akita which is also apparently a killing machine Hmm fortunately she wasn't, she was however a very loving family dog & gorgeous to look at.

Helpmeplan · 25/03/2018 14:28

The ignorance of some people astounds me. Irresponsible ownership and lack of supervision probably cause more bites then any specific breed.

Of course poor genetics and breeding also can cause issues but a good breeder will breed for a good temperament. All 3 of my fur babies have excellent temperaments but have NEVER been left with any of our children alone.

MsWanaBanana · 25/03/2018 14:28

I have a Rottweiler/Staff/Mastiff Cross who is the softest dog you’ll ever meet. He’s amazing and patient with my toddlers, plays with the cats. Proper softie wouldn’t even hurt a fly. In fact, he’s scared of spiders!!!
