Do these exist outside of my area? A few threads bemoaning getting kids to school and cost / effort involved - my dd has a pass now she's in high. school but got a free bus while in primary.

DD's travel to school was free until she turned 16. She now pays 80p per journey. She was entitled to free travel because we live in the catchment area of the school, but live 4 miles away from the school. I think the limit for free travel was living more than 3 miles away.

"So basically every child that needs transport gets it free for their catchment school?
That's fair."

Well it's not fair if your nearest school is a sink school and you can't afford to rent it buy in the catchment of a decent school.
Transport is another way to price poor kids out of decent schools.

Free in London. A nightmare for anyone who has not got school age children and travels at the same time as them.
