Interested to read this in the Guardian today

It’s not a loophole, it’s the bloggers’ interpretation to suit their means. Plenty of evidence to suggest that this is not what the FTC or ASA expect. I think I unfollowed Courtney Adamo for similar reasons. The wholesome lifestyle didn’t sit well with the sneaky adverts.

faceandpalm · 25/03/2018 23:11

@User80656448969 That’s what I thought. It’s a transaction. In exchange for cash / goods, they promote a brand - it’s paid for.

AdidasGirl · 25/03/2018 23:11

That's as sneaky as when they #ad in the middle of a load of other hashtags.

Mumofkids · 25/03/2018 23:13

On socialblades Instagram stats, FOD is currently gaining 36000 followers a month. And if I'm not mistaken the days these threads have peaked (wankergate etc) he's gained twice as many as other days...

RunMummyRun68 · 25/03/2018 23:14

Whoever mentioned claire witt further upthread, I agree!

Claire is on YouTube too. I love her vlogs. She does ads etc. But tastefully. Instamums could learn something from her

Mumofkids · 25/03/2018 23:15

MOD is gaining 24000 per month. They really don't need to give a monkeys about the small minority who question ethics and ads...

Mumofkids · 25/03/2018 23:19

In contrast, today MP has lost more than she's gained, and averages 5000 ish a month. So it would appear that the publicity and the freebies pay off in the world of Instagram.

Fruitbowl2 · 25/03/2018 23:20

The ASA guidelines I linked upthread say perk or gift must have acknowledgement i.e. #AD. But surely the header should be #AD or preferably #ADgifted/given #ADdiscount% etc. So it's clear. And everything in the post- clothes, bags etc should be tagged #AD too. Can you imagine what the posts would look like then!!

Fruitbowl2 · 25/03/2018 23:23

Interesting about the followers. MOFOD have been in national press. MP probably took a battering over the Next/Hello thing and (admirably) she took her eldest daughter off her feed.

faceandpalm · 25/03/2018 23:24

@Mumofkids That paints a very sad picture. Hopefully the ASA will start doing something about these unethical practices... I don’t envy them - Instagram is full of this.

Mumofkids · 25/03/2018 23:28

It is a sad picture. And I'm sure their agents are delighted. And for all the people who come on and say how mean this discussion is, actually it's boosting the business and whilst actual personal comments would be out of order, the stats don't lie and even critical discussion is irrelevant to them because whatever they are doing, it's working brilliantly. (For them)

its5oclocksomewhere · 25/03/2018 23:31

I've seen 2 different people promoting M&S Easter food today. One was marked #ad and one was marked #spon. Now assuming that they've both been briefed by M&S (or an agency who handles M&S social media) on how to put the posts up, even then they can't keep it straight. I think it's clear that #ad means the influencer has been paid. But it's still not clear whether that payment has to be in hard cash or whether payment in goods constitutes #ad as well. I used to think I was pretty clued up on it all but I'd really struggle to explain the difference between #ad and #spon...which actually now I read my post back maybe means it doesn't make any difference on today's M&S posts.....argh!!

Lundi · 25/03/2018 23:38

They're not allowed to use #spon #sp or any such variation, I've recently done the CAP ASA course. Everything must been clearly labelled #ad

Lundi · 25/03/2018 23:42

MOD & FOD need to be really careful; if the ASA are going to target anyone it will be big accounts like theirs, to set an example to the smaller accounts

Badmotherpukka · 25/03/2018 23:43

I posted with AD | at the beginning, #ad at the end and ‘paid for partnership’ today and it resulted in many unfollows but hugely increased engagement. Possibly not relevant but perhaps interesting.

mammyoftwo · 25/03/2018 23:50

Thank you for your honesty badmother

Stellastartsitall · 26/03/2018 00:01

@motherpukka but engagement is what's important not ghost followers.

NoSwsForYou · 26/03/2018 00:03

I love a bit of Instagram Grin and find that ax long as I regularly audit who I follow it is a positive thing for me. I follow most of the ones mentioned in here but I like some of the smaller accounts. Theanonymum is alright, seems like she’s trying to figure her way through some mental health stuff while raising her DS, thegeordiebairn is nice too. Blackandbeech is cool but more of a small business with something to say than a blogger and I like theoutdoordad too!

NotASingleDamnBiroInTheHouse · 26/03/2018 00:07

Yes engagement is the success metric now, not clicks, likes or follows, which are hard to quantify.

I suspect MOFOD have a lot of hate followers. Which are almost as meaningless as bought followers in terms of an advertiser’s ROI.

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 26/03/2018 00:29

RE post where it says the Irish family don’t get much criticism -

It’s not visible in the same way because they block the living crap out of anyone who says anything even slightly critical resulting in an entire forum about them. They also have a much younger viewer demographic than the instamums do so it’s not picked up the same.

There’s people with concerns about them milking the kids for money / coaching them to perform then safety issues like driving whilst holding a camera etc. Been going on for a long time.

The dad made a ‘joke’ about giving his wife roofies a couple of years ago and they ended up losing an Asda gig over it.

Mumofkids · 26/03/2018 00:43

What's a roofie?

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 26/03/2018 00:47

Rohypnol / date rape drugs

Mumofkids · 26/03/2018 00:54

😱😱😱😱😱

tralaaa · 26/03/2018 05:57

After reading this I added FOD of to delete him after a day. Sprinkled glitter has grown up and is under her own name now met a nice chap and vlogged about meeting him ( was nice) has moved house they have moved in together he's a vet and no references to Zoella. She has move on and I like her - but her colab with other vloggers just to add to each other's followers but she does tell you " this" is her business and it won't last for ever. - I am loving this thread - the Meldrums I think their time is up there are only so hello Poppy's I can listen too and how do they support themselves as social media is all they have. I'm baffled.
