AIBU - vegetarian farting problem

Name changed as I am embarrassed about this!
I decided to try being a vegetarian 4 weeks ago for various reasons.
Everything is going great - love trying out new recipes and I already feel a lot fitter and healthier. However, I cannot stop farting.
It is so embarrassing. I have a job where I work with people in their homes and I keep needed to excuse myself to go to the toilet to fart. It is horrendous - there is so much gas and it really smells horrendous.
DP has not become a vegetarian but is eating a lot of the dishes and he is farting all the time as well.

WIBU to go back to eating meat to stop this farting?
Has anyone else experienced the same when switching to a vegetarian diet? Does it stop eventually? Does anyone have any tips to reduce the farting?

Please help!

@veggiethrower don't be too hasty to say it's not onions.

I too loved onions and started every dish I made with onions. Ate them all the time. Then super suddenly when I made other changes to my diet I also developed a fierce intolerance of onion. 😢😢

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha
No I haven't been eating any meat substitutes.

Nooooooo. I love onions.
If it is onions causing the problem I don't know what I will do.

@veggiethrower I know. Mine was identified 2 years ago and I'm still in mourning. 😭

Are you eating a lot of beans and whole grains. I was exactly the same as you when I went vegan then someone told me to make sure I well rinsed all my beans/lentils/whole grains etc... and it really worked!

mygoditsfullofstars · 21/03/2018 21:58

Take some activated charcoal capsules?

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 21/03/2018 22:02

Lie flat and bring your right knee up to your chest. This quietly (non-smelly!) disperses the gas. Been veggie for 40 years and had ‘wind trouble’ for the past 10. This really works! Ps. Just your right knee, not the left.

@SnowySky2009 It's the combination of vegetables all at once that's causing the build up of gas. Especially the broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and onion rings. These four vegetables alone cause gas but together are a lethal combination. Get rid of them all minus one veg and see if that one veg causes veg. Alternate each week and then cut them all out together.

Is it so terrible to fart a lot? As I have got older my natural gas production has increased hugely, but emissions are pretty much controllable. DP and I have no shame about it when it's just the two of us, though.

My husband had guinea fowl instead of turkey on Christmas. It gave him the worst farts ever, for 2 days! They were coming every five minutes, and filled the room with the most noxious smelling gas. It was awful.

He's banned from eating it now.

  • ONE Christmas.

I'm not that bothered about the farting when I am at home, but I visit clients in their homes and I don't really think it is acceptable to be farting all the time - it is embarrassing and also unfair to fill their homes with such a stink!

Tika77 · 22/03/2018 12:11

Been a veggie for a while I’m pretty sure everyone farts. Don’t. Eat. Mushrooms.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/03/2018 12:14

Because Snowy you have 8 - 8 - portions of vegetables there! Shock

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/03/2018 12:16

Just tried that BinkyBunty, nothing.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/03/2018 12:18

Tika I'm giving DS2 mushrooms for fibre, that explains a lot.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 22/03/2018 12:19

I went to school with a family that were all vegetarians and the boy in my class (who was called Frank and some of the kids called him Frankenfarter) used to fart non stop, which to primary school children was hilarious. In the end out teacher stopped story time to give us a lesson about what farts are and why we fart. Blush

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/03/2018 12:22

Frankenfarter Grin
