AIBU - vegetarian farting problem

veggiethrower · 21/03/2018 12:58

Name changed as I am embarrassed about this!
I decided to try being a vegetarian 4 weeks ago for various reasons.
Everything is going great - love trying out new recipes and I already feel a lot fitter and healthier. However, I cannot stop farting.
It is so embarrassing. I have a job where I work with people in their homes and I keep needed to excuse myself to go to the toilet to fart. It is horrendous - there is so much gas and it really smells horrendous.
DP has not become a vegetarian but is eating a lot of the dishes and he is farting all the time as well.

WIBU to go back to eating meat to stop this farting?
Has anyone else experienced the same when switching to a vegetarian diet? Does it stop eventually? Does anyone have any tips to reduce the farting?

Please help!

That's why they are preemptive!
Because they push all the fart out (front and back as a warning!!!) then there's none left to surprise you! Or your classmates/bed bud/ etc

Likeawolf · 21/03/2018 16:23

Chewing fennel seeds after every meal really helps the digestive system and prevents too much gas building up (it's why you sometimes see them in middle eastern restaurants with aniseed sweets).

Also peppermint tea is a good preventative.

And as PP have said, lots of water. I think a brisk walk every day also helps mean you don't get such a build up. Beyond that, it's about identifying the culprit which can vary from person to person -- though I know there are quite a few famous Wind Villains (cauliflower and onions as PP have said).

I am also loving Preemptive Fart Squats.

If I didnt do PFS I'd sound like a Shetland pony out for a trot!Blush

NorthEndGal · 21/03/2018 16:42

And on that classy note, I'm off to do dishes, and sorry for taking over the thread OP.

I talk too much in real life too.

Daifuku9 · 21/03/2018 16:51

I bet it’s just your body adjusting, if you’re eating more fiber than you did prior to the diet change. Can you take anti gas supplements before you eat the gas causing foods?

Uniglo18 · 21/03/2018 18:02

Start taking a high grade probiotic from a health foodcare shop to boost the good bacteria in your gut.

Drink Peppermint tea aswell

halfwitpicker · 21/03/2018 18:06

What exactly are you eating?

halfwitpicker · 21/03/2018 18:07

Are you a weed dealer, northendgal. Those ziplocks look suss

veggiethrower · 21/03/2018 19:14

Sorry I haven't replied yet. I have been doing housecalls and having an awful time thanks to the farting.
Just spent half an hour on the toilet too.
I'll read through all the replies now - thanks to all for writing.

I'm just so surprised - although I previously ate meat, I did eat a lot of vegetables in particular as well as pulses and thought my diet was reasonably rich in fibre.

NorthEndGal - preemptive fart squats - that's hilarious. Needed them today - I kept trying to do mega farts in the car before visiting the next client so that I wouldn't have to fart in their homes.

Some great tips there - thanks!
It definitely isn't onions because I have always eaten loads of them and had no problems. Can't be ready meals - don't eat them.
I think it might be chick peas and broad beans.
Always eaten lentils too without problems like this - the occasional lentil fart but nothing serious.

I feel a bit reassured that others have said it is just the body adjusting and it should settle down. I'll give it a few more weeks.

Bummer op 😂

Loving preemptive fart moves

Are you rinsing your chick peas and beans really well?
Afaik it’s the bubbly coating that’s causing farts. Rinse them in a sieve until the water stops frothing

poddige · 21/03/2018 19:33

PRE EMPTIVE FART SQUATS!! 😂

veggiethrower · 21/03/2018 19:39

I did rinse the chick peas and beans but maybe not enough? I think it was still frothing.

Drunk some peppermint tea and haven't farted for 15 minutes. Wow - that's progress.

When you have soaked the lentils, beans and chick peas, throw the water away. Don't use it to boil the lentils etc. in. Use white beans instead of red beans.

YoloSwaggins · 21/03/2018 19:58

Chickpeas are pretty bad for farting!

DinahMo · 21/03/2018 20:02

Probiotics! But ones without prebiotics, as they can contribute to gas production.

As PP said there’s no such thing as too much fibre really, you just need to adjust

halfwitpicker · 21/03/2018 20:06

? I think it was still frothing.

^

God bless you

NorthEndGal · 21/03/2018 20:11

halfwitpicker nothing so nefarious, lol, although I buy the little plastic dime bags too! But they are just used for sea glass

LemonysSnicket · 21/03/2018 20:29

Are you eating a lot of cruciferous vegetables, beans and fermented food? Because that’s the point of them Grin

LemonysSnicket · 21/03/2018 20:33

Also @NorthEndGal sea glass, studio, far squats .... your life sounds so peaceful and cool.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 21/03/2018 20:39

Btw OP have you been eating any meat substitutes like quorn, tvp, etc?

In my experience those (and oats) cause massive gaseous disturbance.

We are not veggies at the moment (we go through months when we are), however every Sunday I do a big Sunday lunch, copied from my dgrandmother (how I miss this lady so much!), it always consists of: meat, stuffing, Yorkshire pud, boiled potato, roast potato, swede mash, peas, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, onion rings (MIL I adopted that from) and gravy.

Now although we eat loads of veggies every day, on a Sunday evening and Monday, we need to keep the windows open! It is musical farts as everyone walks around. Why???
