AIBU - vegetarian farting problem

Name changed as I am embarrassed about this!
I decided to try being a vegetarian 4 weeks ago for various reasons.
Everything is going great - love trying out new recipes and I already feel a lot fitter and healthier. However, I cannot stop farting.
It is so embarrassing. I have a job where I work with people in their homes and I keep needed to excuse myself to go to the toilet to fart. It is horrendous - there is so much gas and it really smells horrendous.
DP has not become a vegetarian but is eating a lot of the dishes and he is farting all the time as well.

WIBU to go back to eating meat to stop this farting?
Has anyone else experienced the same when switching to a vegetarian diet? Does it stop eventually? Does anyone have any tips to reduce the farting?

Please help!

I have this and am mostly veggie (think meat once every three months). It's a result of eating too much fibre. I try to limit pulses as a source of protein to a couple of times a week and just eat lots of eggs and cheese to compensate. I also find that cabbage really triggers it off which is sad because I really love cabbage. I also make sure to eat lots of easy to digest veg like cooked root vegetables like sweet potatoes or carrots. One of the unpleasant side effects of eating limited meat if your body isn't adjusted to a vegetarian diet. I keep hoping that it will improve but it's been years. I would go back to eating meat but I find British meat really off putting and would rather take the risk of gassing my husband in his sleep.

Dahlietta oh dear, my poor long suffering DS2, who always shrieks, "Mummy!" in a horrified tone. Easter Grin

I had this. It got worse when I started drinking green smoothies. I fixed it with probiotics.

It is a temporary embarassment - it'll settle down! Sometimes an unhealthy beige meal of carbs can help!

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/03/2018 14:06

Um...can someone..I mean, not for me obviously, but..a friend, yes, a friend...can someone explain 'fart squats'?

My..umm...friend...can have some issues in these departments....

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2018 14:06

It sounds like it doesn’t suit you. Or that you’re not chewing your food thoroughly enough.

I don’t eat bread because it makes me windy. Nothing is worth farting over. Grin

TheJoyOfSox · 21/03/2018 14:08

Myself and DH are both vegetarians, I made a five bean chilli last night and honestly expected to be Olympic standard farters this morning but no, not at all windy here in the Joy household.
You may need to overhaul your diet a little. Are you cooking with vast quantities of onions? Or are you eating ready meals? Neither of those will help with the wind.
I doubt eating meat will help, DH and I ate some meat before we had become committed to vegetarianism and my poor DH was violently ill. We experimented and over the course of a few weeks found that he just couldn’t digest meat after being veggie for a few months.

Might I also suggest trying some probiotic drinks, it may help.

GrannyGrissle · 21/03/2018 14:08

Take up yoga? Grin I hear it's good for releasing gas?

alwaysthepessimist · 21/03/2018 14:19

windeze - you need windeze - they work a treat when you follow slimmingworld so I don't see why they wouldn't work for this

preemptive fart squats though.......I nearly died laughing.

Oh and northendgal no I don't have a tea menu.....lol

soupforbrains · 21/03/2018 14:23

Northendgal your "preemptive fart squats" have me dying with laughter! Grin Grin

I too have a vegetarian colleague whose farts (and also poos) could clear an area the size of Wales. However I was veggie for years without any issues. I did however suffer from SO much wind when I unaccountable developed some dietary intolerance.

Give it a couple of months to allow your body to adjust and then if there's no improvement speak to your doc, it may be that something which you've increased your intake of is bothering your digestive system. It probably didn't used to but because you've increased the amounts it could be showing now.

HazelBite · 21/03/2018 14:28

Are you having more onions in your diet, it is quite common for people to suffer dietary intolerances with regard to onions.

NorthEndGal · 21/03/2018 14:47

Sorry, was on a call, don't ignoring anyone😁
So the squats... feet just a bit more than should width, arse out and brace, bounce a wee bit, and up you go, gas powered
Also sorry for the mess , my studio is a bomb site right nowBlush

Introduce stuff such as beans gradually to your diet.

Very very slightly off topic but I can remember my aunt saying she never had wind. She used to get horrified when we burped let alone let one go. Now she does old lady farts all the time. Hahahah it comes to us all....

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/03/2018 15:10

I am not vegetarian but I just cannot eat beans and lentils because of what they do to my farts. I don't know if I am just very sensitive but if I eat them I get really stinky and it all just sort of wafts out of me without me having any say..

PaperdollCartoon · 21/03/2018 15:14

It’s an increase in fibre and actually it’s good for you, most people don’t get enough good fibre. (Too much fibre is not a thing for most healthy people, to the PP who said that, it’s the most important thing for bowel health) Your body will adjust and it probably won’t take long, but maybe reduce portions of things like beans and build them up slowly.

PaperdollCartoon · 21/03/2018 15:14

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie you just need to build up a tolerance

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/03/2018 15:16

NorthEndGal thank you!

I mean, on behalf of my...friend. Who thanks you.

YoloSwaggins · 21/03/2018 15:23

Yeah, I had to stop eating loads of stuff because the farts were LETHAL. I mean LETHAL. No more onions, garlic, avocado, beans, lentils, cabbage or broccoli.....oh and no apples or watermelons. I think I've got FODMAP intolerance. I'm all for animal rights and the concept of veganism, but I don't want to kill people with my farts.

Nowadays I eat a lot of scrambled egg, salad, bread, meat, rice and pasta and no farts! Yay!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 21/03/2018 15:42

As a vegetarian I have loads to say on this topic, but...instead of saying it I'm off to research preemptive fart squats.

Ta-rah!

NorthEndGal · 21/03/2018 15:54

New house in a new province, still using a tea menu😁

If this makes it into The Mail you have a new career NortendGirl as The Trump Whisperer. Maybe get a TV show and put out a DVD?

NorthEndGal · 21/03/2018 16:10

Dying @ trumpwhisperer

tootiredforeverything · 21/03/2018 16:16

Haha not vegetarian or experienced in excessive gas. But had a few embarrassing moments of farting unexpectedly when recovering from my episiotomy. I'd managed 15 years of never breaking wind in front of hubby before this! Think squatting would have only made it worse... Grin
